Chapter 1
"Let's get a divorce." Joey's voice was icy as she gazed at me on the deck of the Titanic cruise ship. I couldn't understand why she would say something so cruel. "Joey, what have I done wrong that makes you want to divorce me? Just tell me, and I won't do it again," I pleaded.
Joey's expression remained unmoved. Her tone turned even colder as she said, "After all these years, you've never been able to satisfy me in bed. You're not as romantic as before, and you can't make me feel excited in bed anymore! I'm tired of our marriage."
Lack of s****l excitement? I couldn't satisfy her? Joey's complaints apparently indicated she had found it in her affair with another guy.
"Joey, have you cheated on me?" I looked at her in disbelief.
Joey didn't admit or deny it. She just stood there, looking composed.
She was beautiful in her tight dress that highlighted her curves. The necklace she wore accentuated her collarbone, making her look even more alluring.
With stylish sunglasses and a wide-brimmed sun hat, Joey leaned against the railing of the cruise ship, looking like a wealthy woman enjoying a luxurious vacation.
"I don't have time for your silly questions. We need to get a divorce, Hans! It's pointless to hold onto this marriage any longer."
I let out a bitter chuckle, meeting her gaze in pain. "I didn't even want to come on this trip with you. You said you needed to get away, and maybe you'd change your mind."
"I said maybe," she shot back.
Her words only fanned the flames of my anger. "You've ruined my life, Joey! I owe the loan sharks two million dollars, all to pay for your father's medical treatments, and you didn't contribute a single cent!"
Faced with my angry accusations, she appeared calm. "I owe you for that."
"I was so close to getting promoted to vice president, but what did you do? The day before my promotion, you made a scene at the office about our divorce to humiliate me. I lost my chance at the promotion, and now I can't even keep my position as a department manager."
Joey closed her eyes and let out a sigh, saying flatly, "That's my fault."
"My parents think I'm having an affair. They believe that's why you want a divorce. How am I supposed to explain this to them?" I looked at her, confused as to why she was so cruel to me.
I first met Joey in college, where she was the campus belle. Many boys liked her, but I won her over with my outgoing personality and incredible basketball skills. She would bring me water during practice, and we often went out to eat, drink, and dance. That was how our love blossomed and led to marriage.
When we wed, I was aware of her family's struggles and poured my savings into her father's medical bills. Through hard work, we created a happy life together, buying our first house and car. I believed that with financial security, we would be happy for the rest of our lives. But I was wrong.
After we married, having fun became the only thing Joey felt like doing. She never did housework. I was the one cooking, cleaning, and caring for her, all while managing tens of thousands in loan payments each month. I sacrificed everything for Joey!
Yet, despite my efforts, Joey still looked down on me. She often called me a failure for not earning enough money and compared me to other men. Recently, I couldn't understand what was wrong with her, especially when she kept insisting on a divorce.
At that moment, I believed she must have cheated on me. If there wasn't another man in her life, why would she want to leave me? And why would she complain that I couldn't satisfy her in bed?
"Enough, Hans. Stop making excuses. The only thing you do is accuse me of cheating on you, but what about you? How much money do you make a month? How much do we have in savings?" Joey questioned me.
"You're my husband, so it's only right that you pay for my father's medical treatment. Besides, just because you bought a house and a car doesn't make you a better man. It's your duty as a man." She looked at me coldly as she said this.
"I regret marrying you. If it weren't for your good looks and basketball skills back then, I would never have said yes. Now I see that good looks and popularity in school don't mean anything in real life. With my looks, I should have married someone rich and successful," she said in a sarcastic tone.
With every word, Joey's disdain for me became clearer. "I didn't cheat on you, but you have no money, no talent, and no time for me. This kind of life is killing me. You never pay attention to my emotional needs, and you can't satisfy me in other ways."
She pulled a divorce agreement from her Hermès bag and tossed it before me. "Stop wasting time. Just sign it."
"Fine, if this is what you want, don't regret it!" I picked up the pen, my hand trembling as I signed the agreement. The memories of our relationship flooded my mind, nearly bringing me to tears.
Joey put the divorce agreement away in her bag with a cold expression and walked toward the cabin without a backward glance.
Suddenly, the cruise ship erupted with a loud, jarring noise and shook violently. In an instant, the ship tilted as waves crashed against it, sending everyone on deck tumbling toward the railing.
Joey, who was just about to open the cabin door, was thrown over the ship's railing.
"Help me, Hans! Help!" Joey screamed as she clutched the railing, about to fall into the sea. Her face was filled with fear; at that moment, she could only turn to me for help.
I had been tossed around as well and struggled to regain my footing. Once I stood up, I saw that our cruise ship was heading straight for an island.
"Oh my god!" Shock washed over me, but I pushed through the pain from the earlier impact and rushed toward Joey.
"Grab my hand!" I reached out, and as the ship hurtled toward the island, I strained to pull her back up.
"Run in the opposite direction! Hurry!" I shouted. "There are life jackets and lifebuoys by the cabin! Go!" I took Joey's hand, and we ran toward the other side under the crew's guidance.
Boom!
The ship collided with the island and was wrecked. Smoke filled the air, and the sound of metal fragments flying echoed around us.
Some people fell down, others were thrown over the railing, and a few didn't survive. The crowd erupted into chaos, filled with cries and screams.
"The ship is sinking! Grab your emergency equipment and run!" the captain shouted, and panic swept over the crowd like wildfire.
I could feel the ship sinking beneath us, the sound of rushing water closing in. People were jumping over the railing to escape.
At that moment of hesitation, as I wondered how to escape, Joey clung to my arm. "Hans, save me! I don't wAnna die!"
