Chapter Sixteen Sudden brightness broke my peace. My eyes strained against a curtain-less sun as I lay in bed. Framed by that light at the foot of the bed stood Carlos, with no John in sight. “What the hell are you doing here, get out!” I bellowed in pure and absolute shock. “It’s ok, it’s ok, John asked me to check in on you as he is at work today. See, you can text him.” He handed me his phone with John’s contact up, I messaged, “It’s Ramona, should Carlos be here?” A delay. “I just wanted him to make sure you’re fine, get you fed.” “Safe?” I really didn’t want to say much on his phone, but I was concerned. “Safe.
