1. Crossing Paths
The night market stank of sweat, cheap beer, and charred meat, filled with a throbbing sea of bodies that scraped against Elias’s nerves. He slouched against a rusted lamppost, eyes cutting through the crowd, the stake tucked against his ribs a cold reminder of his purpose. Another anonymous tip, another night hunting monsters. His family’s ancient legacy—Van Helsing blood, hunters of monsters—pulsed in his veins, but the endless hunt was grinding him down, each kill blurring into the next. Another tip, another night stalking the dark. His eyes, methodically scanned the market, focusing briefly on each face as the sea of bodies passed before him in their blissfully ignorance, divulging in the many pursuits available. He scanned for anything out of the ordinary, anything threatening. Then he saw her. She cut through the crowd like a knife, too clean, yet clumsily avoidant of those around her. Dark hair spilled wild, framing a face that seemed to stick out like a sore thumb —beautiful, raw, wrong. For a heartbeat, Elias forgot his mission, forgot the hunt. “She’s not supposed to be here,” his mind hissed, bringing him soberingly back to the grim reality of his situation. His pulse spiked, drawn to her in a way that felt unknown—until her eyes caught the dim glow of a flickering streetlight. They flashed, unnatural and cold. Vampire! “Shit.” His hand gripped the stake, instinct screaming. She’s one of them! Across the alley, Lena fought a war within herself for control of her body. The stench of blood—warm, pulsating, human—clawed at her throat, her fangs throbbing, begging to rip and tear. She bit her lip, hard, tasting her own dead blood. “Not tonight. Not ever,” she growled under her breath. Barely a week since her maker turned her, betrayed her, left her cursed. She hated this—hated the hunger, the monster she’d become. The alley’s cacophony assaulted her ears with the drum of heartbeats, dragged her forward, her body betraying her will. She didn’t want to feed. Didn’t want to kill. But a feralness newly inside her screamed in discerning protest. Elias’s training roared: End her. Now. His ancestors’ ghosts—centuries of hunters—demanded blood. But something was off. He’d dusted more vamps than he could count, but this one wasn’t like the others. She wasn’t stalking or attacking a single person in the banquet flowing unaware before her. She was shaking, eyes wide with fear yet he sensed a hint of defiance, fighting something Elias had never seen a Vampire battle before: herself. Vampires don’t fear. What’s her game? Her beauty was undeniable, even with that desperate, almost inhuman edge in her face, enthralled him. He cursed himself, hand twitching on the stake. “If I’m wrong about her…” The thought lingered, dangerous, as his grip faltered in his doubt of what he had been meticulously trained so many years to do without question. Lena’s eyes fell upon him, locking on his through the alley’s haze. Her dead heart lurched. He knows. Panic burned through her and her stomach turned with a newfound dread. He’s a hunter. He’s here to kill me! She didn’t know how she knew—some instinct from her new, cursed reality—but his stare, sharp and lethal, screamed silently of impending doom. Yet there was something else in his eyes, a flicker of doubt within. She was astonished with all the information she could decipher from a distant glance, things she would never have noticed before HE, the master, had cursed her to this current state of being. He sees I’m fighting it, she thought, a seed of hope dared to warm her cold body. Maybe he knows a way out of this hell. Inspite of the hope she felt, the reality of her precarious situation made itself known to her: He’s a hunter. I’m his prey. Elias stepped forward, boots crunching on broken glass as he started to weave his way through the throng of obliviousness, voice low and rough. “Are you okay?” The words felt wrong, soft, not the challenge he’d meant. He was testing her, waiting for fangs, a snarl, anything to justify the stake itching to taste vampire flesh. But part of him—damn it—wanted her to be different. Lena’s hands flew up, trembling, palms out. “Please, don’t!” Her voice cracked, raw with terror. A cluster of drunks stumbled between the two in the street having been kicked out of the pub by its landlord, blocking their line of sight. With her eyes no longer prisoner of this hunters intense gaze, Lena seized the moment, bolting into the shadows, her cursed speed making her a blur fading into the night. When the crowd cleared, Elias stood alone, stake still in hand. “f**k!”
