A Hero's Journey

Chapter 2

    After I finished my studies, I went to make dinner for everyone when my stepmother Barb came home from work. 

“Hey Aren, Brad is coming for dinner next week, so make sure to cook something that he likes.” 

“Of course,” I reply as she was walking to her room to put her things away and change. 

Brad is my stepbrother, Barb's son, but I call him brat because well he is one. Right now, he's away at college probably getting drunk off his a*s. Yeah, I know I pretty much have no filter. I made dinner as everyone started to come home, my dad came home with my little sister Jennifer not too long after Barb and Aaron has just been in his room this whole time. After everyone started to eat, I excused myself and went upstairs to go to bed because I wasn’t hungry. Before I knew it, I was out like a light. I woke up the next day to Aaron shaking me. 

“What do you want?” I ask him while stuffing my face into my pillow more. 

“Get up, something happened, we need to go to the station. Met me outside in ten minutes” he said walking out of my room. I got up fast, did everything I needed to do to be ready, and ran outside. 

“Do you know what happened,” I asked him to get in the car. 

“No” he shook his head. 

We drove the rest of the way in silence. The suspense was killing me, I need to know what's going on. After a little while, they pulled into the station's parking lot. As I walk in the station, the tension in the air was thick. Just then I see Makaylah’s dad yelling at some officers, her mom sitting in a seat crying with Trent next to her, but I don’t see Makaylah. I run up to them and ask what happened. 

“Makaylah hasn’t been home in over 24 hours.” her mom says in a worried voice. 

“Last time we saw her, she left for school, then she was at school. I called and they told me she was present in all her classes, and that’s all we know. We would probably know more, but these stupid officers can’t do their job and FIND MY DAUGHTER,” He said yelling the last part in the direction of the officers. 

“Hold on, Makaylah was with me after school. I think she headed home around 5:30.” That’s when the realization hit me. 

“Oh no.” After the words left my mouth I ran to the commissioner's office, also known as my dad's office. No-one stopped me because they all know who I am. As soon as I get into his office, I tell my dad about how I told my theory and everything that I told Makaylah, 

“I think we're being watched, and she was taken, dad. That if not all some of my theory was right. We are so close I can feel, we just need to get Makaylah back.” My dad thought about it for a minute then he agreed with me, so we started making out plan. But before we continued to make the plan, I ran out to tell everyone what was happening. Makaylah’s mom just cried harder and hugged herself, I noticed Trent wasn’t there, but then the mayor, Makaylah’s dad came up to me and said, 

“Please make sure my baby girl is going to be alright” 

“I promise to do everything I can to get her back” I replied. 

After everyone was settled, they went home. Leaving me, dad, and a few officers left in the station for the night to try and figure things out. 

Later that night we received an untraceable phone call, and it changed everything. 

“I see that this Makaylah girl means a lot to some very important people, giving that her father is the mayor and all. See my people have been watching a little miss Aren, ah yes, the commissioner's daughter, no? Well, she knows too much for my liking, and we need to fix that. You find us when we want you to find us, bye......for now.”  

We all stood there shocked about what just happened. We didn't get to respond because they hung up. The silence was getting too much to handle, I couldn’t take it, that’s when I clicked, 

“The Red Mafia” I whispered, everyone now looking at me. Realizing how right I am about this because when the male voice on the phone said ‘You find us when we want you to find us’ it’s something that old mafias used to say to each other before there was a treaty when they wanted to destroy you. The only ones that would use it now are the Red Mafia. Which means that they are back.
