A STORMY NIGHT
The road was wet and muddy as the rain poured down with relentless force. The cold was biting, so intense that even the trees seemed to shiver beneath the assault of the storm.
Alexander drove carefully through the deserted road, his car cutting through the darkness like a lone beacon. The windows were rolled up tightly, shielding him from the freezing wind outside. Despite the heater blasting warm air throughout the vehicle, he still felt an occasional shiver run down his spine.
He had always boasted that cold weather could never affect him, but tonight was proving him wrong.
As the warmth gradually seeped into his body, his thoughts drifted back to the events of the evening. A small smile touched his lips when he remembered how successfully he had slipped away from the club without his friends noticing.
If they had seen him shivering like this, they would have laughed at him for months.
Earlier that evening, he had returned home from work only to find Camilla waiting for him.
Camilla was his fiancée of two months and the woman he had loved for more than three years. After proposing to her, he had planned to formally visit her parents and begin wedding preparations. However, something had stopped him.
Ever since he slipped the engagement ring onto her finger, Camilla had changed.
The sweet, caring woman he had fallen in love with seemed to have disappeared. In her place stood someone who constantly criticized him. She complained about everything—from the clothes he wore and the colors he liked to the friends he kept and the places he visited.
Nothing ever seemed good enough anymore.
The house was constantly filled with arguments. She questioned his every move and treated every delayed phone call as evidence of betrayal.
His friends had repeatedly advised him to end the relationship before it became worse.
Yet he couldn't.
Three years ago, when they first met, Alexander had been shocked to discover that Camilla was still a virgin at the age of twenty-three. In a world where casual relationships seemed common, he had viewed her as rare and precious.
That night, after they became intimate, he had silently promised himself that he would never let her go.
Perhaps that promise was the reason he remained with her despite everything.
Tonight had been particularly exhausting. Camilla had pushed every one of his buttons until he finally accepted his friends' invitation to visit a nightclub.
It was something he hadn't done in years.
Unfortunately, the experience had only worsened his mood.
The deafening music had given him a headache, while women he barely knew constantly threw themselves at him.
Instead of finding peace, he found irritation.
Alexander sighed heavily and ran his fingers through his damp hair.
Suddenly, something by the roadside caught his attention.
His eyes narrowed.
Without thinking, he slammed on the brakes.
The car screeched to a halt.
A few meters ahead lay what appeared to be a large sack.
Because of the darkness and rain, he couldn't determine its exact color. However, one detail immediately stood out.
Hair.
A thick mass of dark hair protruded from the opening of the sack.
Alexander stared at it.
Even from where he sat, the hair looked remarkably real.
His heartbeat accelerated.
For several seconds, he remained frozen behind the steering wheel, unsure whether he should get involved.
The storm continued to rage outside as countless possibilities raced through his mind.
Finally, he released a resigned breath.
Curiosity won.
Opening the car door, he stepped into the rain.
Instantly, icy water soaked through his clothes.
Ignoring the discomfort, he fixed his gaze on the sack.
It looked harmless enough, but an inexplicable fear tightened around his chest.
Why did he have such a terrible feeling about this?
Alexander had never considered himself a fearful man. Yet every instinct warned him to get back into his car and drive away.
Still, he couldn't leave.
Not without knowing.
Gathering his courage, he slowly approached.
He had barely taken five steps when the sack moved.
Alexander jumped.
His heart nearly leaped out of his chest.
For a moment, he stood rooted to the spot, staring.
"It's the wind," he muttered to himself.
But then it moved again.
This time, there was no mistaking it.
Something inside the sack had moved.
His mouth went dry.
Okay... this is starting to look like a horror movie.
The thought flashed through his mind and almost made him laugh nervously.
Determined not to let fear control him, he forced himself forward.
As he walked, he glanced around cautiously. The road was empty. There wasn't another vehicle in sight.
Only darkness.
Only rain.
Only him.
Reaching the sack, he crouched down carefully.
His trembling fingers grabbed the loose opening and slowly pulled it downward.
The moment he did, he froze.
A human face stared back at him.
Alexander stumbled backward in shock.
His heart pounded violently against his ribs.
Mud partially covered the face, making it difficult to identify the person, but there was no doubt.
Someone was inside the sack.
Someone human.
He swallowed hard and wiped rainwater from his face.
The long hair was completely matted with mud, but from its length and texture, he guessed it belonged to a girl.
Fighting the urge to run, he crouched down once more.
With shaking hands, he carefully pulled the sack lower.
The girl's shoulders emerged.
Then her chest.
Then her waist.
Suddenly, her eyes fluttered open.
Alexander nearly screamed.
He jerked backward so quickly that he almost slipped in the mud.
For one terrifying second, his mind abandoned all logic.
She's alive!
The girl's eyes were barely open, unfocused and weak, yet they seemed to be staring directly at him.
Alexander's imagination instantly began producing ridiculous explanations.
A ghost.
A witch.
A spirit sent to haunt him.
But the thoughts disappeared as quickly as they came.
The girl looked far too fragile.
Far too broken.
Far too human.
His gaze dropped lower.
That was when he saw the blood.
A large patch of dark red stained her stomach.
Even beneath the rain, he could see it clearly.
His stomach twisted.
The girl shifted slightly, her body moving with obvious discomfort. Yet her eyes remained half-closed, as though she wasn't fully conscious.
A surge of urgency swept through him.
Without wasting another second, Alexander pulled the remaining sack away from her body and tossed it into the nearby bushes.
Then he carefully slipped one arm beneath her shoulders and another beneath her knees.
She felt alarmingly light.
Ignoring the risks and questions racing through his mind, he lifted her into his arms.
The rain continued to pound against them.
Within seconds, both of them were drenched.
Alexander hurried toward his car.
For the first time since spotting the sack, he became aware of how soaked he was. Water dripped from his hair and clothes, but he couldn't bring himself to care.
All his attention was focused on the injured girl.
Her face was pale.
Too pale.
As he reached the car, he silently prayed that she would survive.
Opening the rear door, he gently laid her across the back seat.
Her breathing was weak but present.
Relief flooded through him.
Closing the door carefully, Alexander rushed around the vehicle and slid behind the steering wheel.
His hands tightened around the wheel.
He had no idea who she was.
He had no idea who had done this to her.
But one thing was certain.
If he didn't get her help immediately, she might not live long enough to answer those questions.
