IN MAY I FINALLY MOVED out of the nurses accommodation. Months spent scouring the newspapers finally paid off. I found a room in a Warrender Park flat. I met with the four other occupants – they seemed pretty cool. Jonie, the flat’s owner, was a teacher. Calley was studying law. Mo had just finished her course at Edinburgh College of Art, and Bill was some kind of musician. Jonie was moving in with her boyfriend and I’d be renting her room. The lassies were suitably impressed I was training to be a nurse. Bill was happy as f**k to find out my folks lived in Partick – he was Glaswegian and from the same area. What are the odds? The flat had four bedrooms and a dining kitchen-c*m-liv- ing room. Originally a two-bedroom apartment – Jonie had converted the living room into a bedroom – Bill was in the tiny box-room. The rent was eighty quid a month, plus bills. They offered me the room, and I snapped it up. The place was perfect. Walking down the corridor of the nurse’s home for the last time – I breathed a massive sigh of relief. Not that I hated living there. I didn’t. It was cheap, warm, and incredibly handy for work. I was tired of creeping about, avoiding lassies. The stress was killing me – it was the right time to move. Lisa offered to help shift my stuff in her beautiful, sky- blue Volkswagen Beetle. Told her it was easy to jump a taxi on Lauriston Place – my worldly belongings were few, and I was keen to avoid the possibility of her meeting any of the girls I had intimate knowledge of. I’d literally just put my bags at the front door when who appeared in front of me? Yep, the first-year student. f**k’s sake. Something was different about her. I faked a smile. “Hi, how’s it going?” “Everything’s fine,” she said. A big, beaming smile on her cute face. OK, that’s good. She asked about the bags. Told her I was moving into a flat in Newington. “Maybe I’ll see you. My boyfriend shares a flat in West Saville Terrace.” Thank f**k she found someone, but why did I have to pick Newington? “Yes, maybe we’ll bump into each other if I’m lucky.” She smiled but didn’t leave – s**t. “So, how’s the course going?” I asked. “Great. I’m starting Urology at the Deaconess.” “Sounds good. I worked there. It’s a decent enough ward.” She stuck with me. Wishing she’d leave – I began thinking about her being naked. f**k man. I tried to think of something else, but it was no use. Didn’t help that she looked and smelled really good. Blue and white striped t-shirt and leg-hugging blue stretch jeans. Her open toe sandals revealed a perfect pair of pedicured feet. Petite with a great wee pair of t**s. “Ok, I need to shoot and grab a taxi,” I said, felt like I was shouting at her. “Alright, Calum, see you.” On the taxi ride to Warrender, all I could think about was her wee body – naked. Jonie let me in and officially welcomed me with a hug and a cup of tea. Nice. Lying on the bed in my new room, I felt totally relaxed and happy. No more dodging women. Promising myself never to bring anyone back here. Of course, I won’t. I said out loud. I love Lisa. A knock on the door. “Calum, phone call.” It was Lisa. She was coming to pick me up.
