College was supposed to be simple—lay low, get good grades, and try to live a normal life. Raine didn’t expect to find her fated mate… or become the target of a dark and deadly plan.

When she meets Jahlani, a protective and irresistible werebear, sparks fly—and fate takes over. But love isn’t the only thing awakening. As secrets from Raine’s past resurface, she’s thrust into a fight for her life, her freedom, and the mate she’d do anything to protect.

Fated mates. Ancient enemies. And a love powerful enough to change everything.

Prologue : The Night Before
Jahlani The scent of roasted vegetables and honey-glazed salmon filled the cozy cottage, blending with the warm laughter echoing from the dining room. Dani had outdone herself again, though she insisted Tyson was the real cook in the family. He didn’t argue, simply smirking from across the table as he watched his mate flutter around, making sure everything was just right. “Jahlani, if you don’t put your phone down, I swear I’ll throw it in the mashed potatoes,” Dani warned, only half-serious. “Relax, sis,” I said with a grin, finally slipping the phone into my pocket. “Just checking the dorm group chat. Gotta stay updated. Roommate drama already, and I haven’t even met the guy yet.” Dani rolled her eyes, but there was love behind it. “You move in tomorrow. Tonight is family time.” I held up my hands in surrender. “I’m here. I’m present. I’m soaking in the moment.” From his booster seat at the end of the table, little Malakai giggled, banging his tiny spoon against his tray. He had Tyson’s warm brown skin and Dani’s golden eyes, framed by a head full of wild curls that refused to be tamed. “Kaikai gets it,” I said, leaning over to boop my nephew’s nose. “You’re on my side, right, little man?” Malakai squealed and clapped, clearly unaware of the alliance he’d just formed. “Don’t drag my baby into your nonsense,” Tyson said with a low chuckle. His voice, deep and smooth as ever, held the weight of authority and affection. He rested an arm casually around Dani’s chair but kept his watchful gaze on me. “So. You really ready for this?” I hesitated for a beat. Not because I wasn’t ready — I was more than ready — but because I could feel the weight of what Tyson was really asking. Are you ready to leave? To become your own man? To find your place in this world — or maybe even your mate? “I think so,” I finally said, my voice steadier than expected. “I mean, yeah. I’m nervous. But excited, too.” “You’ll be great,” Dani said, reaching over to squeeze my hand. “I still remember when I left for college. Mom cried for three days. And I called her every night like clockwork.” “That’s ‘cause you were a mama’s girl,” I teased. “Still am,” she said proudly. “But now I’m a mama myself.” As if on cue, Malakai let out a soft whine, and Dani scooped him from his seat with practiced ease. He curled into her chest, content and already half-asleep, his thumb making its way to his mouth. Tyson rose and started clearing dishes, and I instinctively joined him. It was a routine we’d fallen into naturally over the past year. Tyson, for all his power and presence, never shied away from helping around the house. Dani had made it clear from day one that she expected partnership, not dominance. And Tyson, to everyone’s surprise and eventual admiration, had stepped fully into that role. “You’ll call us if anything feels off?” Tyson asked quietly as we rinsed plates side by side. I looked over, surprised by the seriousness in his voice. “You mean, like… dorm food poisoning? Or, ‘hey guys, I met my mate and she’s crazy hot, but also just…crazy’?” Tyson didn’t laugh. “I mean if your instincts start going haywire. If something doesn’t feel right. If you sense danger — even if it doesn’t make sense yet. Call. Don’t second-guess yourself.” I sobered quickly. “Yeah. Okay. I promise.” Tyson nodded, satisfied, and gave me a light shoulder bump. “Good. You may be grown now, but you’ll always be Dani’s little brother. And I take that seriously.” “I know,” I said, grinning. “You’re like the scariest teddy bear I’ve ever met.” Tyson smirked. “Damn right.” We finished cleaning up in companionable silence. When we returned to the living room, Dani had set up the couch with a blanket and Malakai lay tucked against her chest, snoring softly. She looked up and smiled as I approached. “We’re leaving early in the morning, right?” she asked, her voice soft. “Yeah. Thought I’d beat traffic and get there in time to meet the roommate before things get too crazy.” “I’m proud of you,” she said. “Mom and Dad are too. They just couldn’t make the drive out this weekend with everything going on at home.” “I know. I already told them I’ll visit in a couple weeks. But thanks, D. For letting me stay here this summer. For helping with everything.” Her eyes shimmered, but she blinked quickly. “Don’t make me cry, dummy.” “I love you too,” I said with a playful smirk, pulling her into a hug that somehow managed not to wake the baby. As the night wore on, we stayed curled on the couch — Dani and Malakai dozing, Tyson in the armchair scrolling through something on his tablet, and I staring up at the ceiling, wide awake. Tomorrow, everything would change. I wasn’t just heading to college. I was stepping into the next chapter of my life — one that could include my future, my purpose… and if fate aligned just right, my mate. The thought made my heart race. I had always believed in the bond. I’d seen it firsthand with Dani and Tyson. The way their connection lit up a room. The way it grounded them, even through the roughest storms. Would I feel it too? Would she? My bear stirred beneath the surface, restless and curious. There was something pulling at me, a low thrum in my chest that had started the moment I packed my bags. I couldn’t name it, but I felt it in my bones. Something was waiting for me in Jade City. And I couldn’t wait to find out what.
