Meredith: Chapter Six

1594 Words
We stood behind a one way mirror peering into a small room with a table set in the middle. It looked kind of like the small visitation room I was taken to just the day before, but this one had a visible camera in the corner and what looked like links in the walls to chain prisoners to. I took a deep breath and hoped that today was a success. It was their first test and I was scared sh*tless that my mates would be too territorial to try to be cordial. A guard walked in with Connor first and let him stand in the corner where I could barely see him. I felt my heart flutter while looking at his ethereal face and I placed my hand on the glass. "Do they know I'm here? Will they be able to scent me?" The Alpha stood next to me and shook his head. "These rooms were built with magic. My grandfather had them built so that wolves wouldn't be able to scent anyone out of that room, in case they got out and wanted revenge for one thing or another. Just a precaution so no one gets hurt." I nodded. That was smart. I was also a bit bummed I wished that they knew that I was here so that they would behave. The guard stood stiffly beside him and moved to stand in front of him as the door opened. Gerald stepped in, led by a different guard. Both of their faces turned murderous as they glared at each other. I could see Gerald's handsome face contort in anger and he looked frightening. I was sure if his wolf was awake, they would have already attacked. I felt my stomach drop and I gulped audibly. Connor took a step closer to Gerald by the door, a sneer darkening his angelic face. "What are we doing here?" Connor asked the guard in front of him. He didn't answer him. Gerald's body was rigid and tense as he waited for Connor to make a move. After five minutes of them standing there without making another move or sound, Gerald was taken out of the room and I could see Connor visibly deflate. He rolled his shoulders and took a seat on the corner of the table, facing the glass. I could see his eyes looking at the glass and somehow his eyes landed on me. "Can he see me?" The Alpha shook his head. "No. It's a two way mirror. We can see him, but he can't see us. I suspect he knows someone is watching him. I placed my hand back on the glass and watched his eyes. He had beautiful stormy grey eyes that reminded me of a rainy day. He fiddled with his cuffs and stared at the glass. I felt like he was looking straight through my soul. I had always thought he was beautiful. He always had these soft features that I was jealous of. I wished I could touch him. The door opens again and he stands up again, his shoulders once again, tense. They relaxed as he was handed the t-shirt I had slept in last night, packed in a plastic baggie. He glanced up at the guard and slowly unzipped the bag. His eyes widened as he realized what was in the bag. He took my shirt out and held it out and looked at it, an intense look in his stormy eyes. He brought it to his nose and inhaled deeply. Something about that made my n*pples harden in response. I squeezed my thighs and took a deep breath. He sat back down on the table and kept the shirt pressed against his smiling face. Gerald was brought back in and I could see the very second he caught a whiff of me. His eyes zeroed in on the shirt in Connor's hands and he lunged immediately, snatching at the shirt. I pressed both of my hands on the glass, praying to the Goddess that she would make him see sense. The guard caught him around the middle and muscled him back towards the door. Connor stood at the back wall, my shirt tucked behind him and a snarl coming from his lips. Please I thought to myself. Please don't fight. "Give me that. It doesn't belong to you." Gerald growled and and held his hand out towards Connor. The guard let go of him and he made no move to take the shirt away. "They gave it to me. It's mine." Connor held a protective stance and clutched at my shirt tightly. "She's my mate. I demand you give me the shirt now." Gerald 's voice was calm and steady and I felt a bit of hope bloom in my chest. I smiled at him and hoped that he kept it up. "No. She's mine. I'm keeping it. She obviously had it sent to me, not you." Connor straightened, a haughty expression on his face and in glanced at Gerald. "Look, pup, I know what this is. It's a damn test to see if we can share because you seem to think you have some claim on her. So hand over the shirt so they can see we can share and we can leave this place." He held out his hand and Connor looked at him uncertain. He was probably wondering if he was right. They wouldn't be released today, because the y would still have to test their wolves, but this seemed like a good start. "Are you willing to share her?" Connor asked. He still had my shirt hidden behind his back. Gerald scowled and grit his teeth. "The only reason why I haven't pummeled your face bloody is because she says you belong to her too. I don't want to share, but I do want her." "So, what does that even mean?" "It means that if I have to put up with her going to you for a few hours a day, I'll let her." Connor scoffed and shook his head. "You're so confident that she will want to stay with you?" "I know for a fact she will. No one wants a mutt for a mate." He spat in between the both of them and I saw hurt flash in Connor's eyes. I felt anger bubble in my stomach at Gerald's comment. Mutt was one of the dirtiest words you could use for a mixed race wolf. "She told me just yesterday that she was happy to be with me." "It's only the bond talking. Just you watch, when it's time to have pups, she won't turn to you for them. She won't risk her children having Fae blood." I felt my face burn with anger and I rocked back. I glared down at the floor in front of me and walked to a chair behind me. My dad opened up his arm and let me sit beside him and lean into him. The Alpha stood, watching my mates bicker. I didn't know what to do. I wanted to get to know both of them, but his hateful comments were making me so angry with him. Cara was upset with me for being upset at her mate. Emmy sat silently, urging me to go watch our mates again. I sighed and stood back up. Connor was now holding the shirt out to Gerald. Gerald looked at him warily and outstretched his hand. Neither seemed too keen on taking a step towards each other and I wondered how hard it was for them to not want to attack each other. Gerald at last took a step towards him and snatched the shirt from him. He scrunched it up and put it up against his nose and sighed in relief. The angry lines in his faces relaxed and he seemed to almost have forgotten that Connor was in the same room. I was so busy watching Gerald that I had completely missed when Connor lunged. He tackled Gerald to the ground and began pummeling him right in the face, his grey eyes crazy with rage. The guards grabbed him but not before Gerald got a good kick to his privates, cupping the blood that was spurting out of his nose. Alpha Jack closed his eyes and turned to me. "Seems to me we might need a little more time in here. You don't have to come to the next ones, but we will start conditioning them to be around each other more. Not just in here, but during recreational time and whenever we see a good opportunity. I felt my eyes tear up but I nodded in understanding. Rome wasn't built in a day. I had to remind myself that this was all new for everyone involved. "Can I see them today?" "Unfortunately, I don't think so, Meredith. I think we will be using the bond as a bargaining tool. To see if they will behave next time with the promise of seeing you afterwards." I nodded slowly, angry now that they didn't behave. I felt like I was also being punished. I watched as they carted Gerald away with my now bloody shirt and then Connor afterwards. My dad stood up from the back and ushered me to the door after they were safely away. Both Cara and Emmy whined at the prospect of not being able to see our mates. I wondered if there was a way I could get word to them to please behave so they could see me.
