Meredith
My dad was unhappy with me. As soon as I had decided to go see my fated in jail he went berserk. I had just gotten out of the hospital and I begged him to let me see them. The Alpha had agreed to let me go, but he wasn't very happy about it either.
After seeing them, Dad was even more p*ssed. He stomped around his truck and drove like a bat out of hell down the street until we got closer to town. "He has Fae blood, Mer. They are untrustworthy. They lie! They take humans and make them pets! They are evil! You need to reject him, Mer. He's no good."
"Dad, no. He's only a quarter Fae. And I doubt he has any human pets, dad. He lives in the pack. No humans allowed, remember?"
I smiled up at him and he rolled his eyes. "I don't care if he only has one percent Fae blood. You will not have pups by that man!"
"You will not dictate what I can or cannot do with my mate, dad." I yawned and laid my head down on the passenger side door. All I could think about was my mates. Cara and Emmy whined pitifully and I could already feel the beginning of a headache start to form just from them wanting to go back to the jail to be with our mates. Part of me wanted to and the other part just wanted to go home and lay down and think about how this was going to work.
I knew it was going to be hard. I knew that the Alpha and dad didn't want me to have anything to do with both of them. I knew Connor from school and nearly face palmed myself for being such a b*tch to him for years. He looked so insecure and scared sitting in front of me. I was pretty sure he was going to reject me the second he walked through that door and looked at my face.
I had seen how his eyes had traced over my scar. I had wanted to hide, but I couldn't or else he would be even more upset than he already was. And Gerald was...I took a deep breath. Both men were gorgeous without a doubt.
I hit the jackpot when the Goddess blessed me with good looking mates. I was just scared about the future. I knew that it wasn't going to go smoothly. I knew that there was no way it would be rainbows and unicorns when they finally were able to get out of jail.
I had a sudden urge to go see if I could get a meeting with the Alpha so that we could talk about what would come next.
"Dad, I know we have work, but is there a way we can go by the pack house? I want to see if I can set up a meeting with the Alpha to speak about my mates."
"Honestly, Pumpkin, I think you should sleep on it. You just met them and you don't need to go and make any rash decisions about it right now."
I narrowed my eyes at him and sighed. "Dad, I need them. I can't just sit here and wait for them to get out of jail. Like, when will that be? They have to see each other and be around each other if they're going to get used to it. And if they can't do that, then when am I ever going to be with them?"
"I know." He groaned. He wiped a hand over his face and down his beard. He pulled on it lightly in thought and sighed. He turned the truck back around and I grinned.
"Thank you!" I reached out with my good arm and winced. My rib was still sore, but fully healed. I squeezed his arm and bounced in my seat.
At the pack house, Dad led the way inside and asked a warrior standing near the entrance that we needed to set up a meeting with the Alpha.
When he came back he asked us to follow him and he took us to the Alpha's office. The whole pack house was gigantic. I'm pretty sure if I lived here, I would get lost. The whole house took up about four acres of land and had tons of rooms. I had read about it somewhere in school. I had just never seen it for myself.
Once outside the Alpha's office, the warrior knocked and and we waited. The Alpha called for us to come in. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed was the wall of books behind the Alpha's desk.It was gigantic from floor to ceiling. I stared at it in awe and then looked around the rest of the office. There was a small seating area off to the left and a mini bar area on the right. There were also a couple of chairs in front of the Alpha's desk, which looked more modern than the rest of the office.
The Alpha, a big burly man that looked like he could be my dad's brother or cousin, beckoned us towards the chairs in front of his desk and sat back in his chair, a polite smile on his face.
Despite the smile, his thick, eyebrows and long dark beard made him look dangerous. He oozed with power and I immediately bared my throat and submitted as I stood in front of his desk I watched dad do the same.
"Please, sit." Out of the corner of my eye I saw Alpha Matthew rise from the seating area and prowl over to us, looking just as severe in the face. He was a handsome man and at school I had been jealous of Jocelyn for snagging him, but now as I stared at him, I felt glad that tiny Elena got him.
He was hot but too serious. He would definitely protect Elena from whatever. He stood behind his father and handed his dad a manila file. He gave me a polite smile like his dad and walked back to the seating area.
We sat down and I felt my hands start to sweat. I wiped my hands on my jeans and smiled. "Hello, Alpha Jack, I was wondering if we could talk about my mates."
Alpha Jack gave a curt nod and picked up the file he got from his son. He opened it and laid it on the table.
"Sure. What about them would you like to discuss?"
"I wanted to know when they would be released."
"We can't be too sure of that. Right now we have to make sure if they can even be around each other. If they can, then we would have to test to see if we put your scent in the room with them if they would have the urge to fight without their wolves. And if they pass that test, then we would have to test them after the wolfsbane is out of their system."
I thought about it and felt the hope that had bubbled up in my chest deflate.
"Will that take long?"
"It all depends on your mates. If they can behave with each other cordially, then it shouldn't take long, but we are territorial beasts. We have a mate for life and we don't like to share. It will be hard for them to fight those urges, especially when they are both around you."
I swallowed back the lump that was forming in my throat and nodded. "I talked to them. They said they would try. Do you know when we can start trying?"
He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. He trained his cold, blue eyes on me and I felt myself cringe. "It's strange this thing that has happened, Meredith. I have researched since it happened and never, at least written, in history has there been a case like this. Yours is the first. We don't know if it can be done. We don't know if they will ever be able to accept you and eachother."
I glanced at my dad and he nodded solemnly. "So these tests, if they fail, what will we do?"
"If you decide to keep both of your mates, they will remain in lock up. We can't risk them out there attacking each other with chance encounters. And from the looks of you, they were after blood."
"So...if they can't get along and I don't reject either of them, they will stay in jail until..."
"Until you can decide which one you want."
I felt my eyes tear up and I nodded again. F*ck. I hoped that they could do this. I hoped that they would do this for me.
"We will start tomorrow afternoon. If you want to be present to witness, you can be. I will also ask that you bring an object or article of clothing with your scent for each of them. I have a few ideas rolling around, so don't get discouraged. But also remember one thing Meredith."
He reached his hand out and placed it on my good hand on his desk. "If this doesn't go the way we want it to, it would be cruel to leave them locked up. Wolves aren't made to be locked up."
And with that, the meeting was over and I left with a sense of dread looming over me. I needed to be there for the first test. I needed to see them after and tell them that I needed them to do this for me. Because I already felt like I wouldn't be able to live without either of them. And honestly, I wouldn't know who to choose if it came down to it.
