Chapter 1
In the second month after the birth of their third child, Jeremy Sawyer met his wife Laura Lane for the third time since her move to Paron, where she had been running her business for five years. She had returned this time to register the child for citizenship.
This time, he did not argue. He did not make a scene. He was no longer like the previous two times when the child had been taken away after registration, when he had knelt on the ground in heartbreak and begged. Instead, he handed over the third child on his own. His face was calm, which made Laura slightly surprised.
"Not going to make a fuss?"
Jeremy lowered his head and spoke in a hoarse voice, "Laura, your company is getting bigger. I'd feel at ease if the baby stays with you, the mother."
Laura looked out the window. Her voice sounded rough. "Work in Paron is busy. I will not stay this time. Please take care of my father."
Jeremy started to say, "Dad is..."
Laura stood up and interrupted him. "Dad has dementia. He does not even remember me when we meet. I will not visit him."
She lifted her head and placed a cold kiss on his face. Then, she left holding the child.
The door closed. Jeremy swallowed the word, "dead." He slowly pulled out the divorce agreement from under the pillow and murmured to himself, "It has been five years. You have come to see me three times. This time, I will go to Paron to see you.
"If those rumors are true, I will no longer keep the Lane family strong for you. I will not wait for you anymore."
Two days later, Jeremy closed the BBQ restaurant.
It was the first time he stepped onto a ship. He did not know that much of the ship beyond the fishy sweat smell, but it could also shake hard enough to take a life.
His stomach churned violently. He vomited until even bile was gone.
In his dazed state, memories flashed past like a moving lantern.
At sixteen, his family went bankrupt. His parents were forced by creditors until they jumped to their deaths. Laura saved him from the thugs. She even broke her own legs but still insisted on marrying him.
At seventeen, Laura risked her life to give birth to their eldest son for him.
Just after that, she bought a plane ticket, held the child, and boarded a flight to Paron. She said she needed to go out and build something so their family could live a better life.
Over these five years, she only came back three times. Each time, their intimacy was intense, as if she was completing a task.
Every child she had with him was taken away without exception.
He took care of her elderly father with dementia. He supported all hopes of the Lane family and the BBQ restaurant. He believed her promise that one day she would return in glory and bring the family together again.
Until half a month ago.
A friend returning from Paron accidentally let it slip.
Laura had another man. Their two biological children called that man dad.
After the news spread, he said nothing. He only wanted to see with his own eyes whether the woman he once risked his life to save had truly built a second home.
Fifteen days later in the evening, the ship docked.
Jeremy asked around and finally found himself in front of an extremely grand villa.
As he looked inside, a black Bentley honked behind him. Laura stepped out of the car holding a man in a sharp suit.
The man looked Jeremy over with a sharp gaze.
"You," he said with an English accent. "Who are you looking for?"
Laura's smile froze for a moment. It only lasted a second before she snapped out of it.
"Don," she said. She held the man's arm and spoke casually. "This is Jeremy, a driver from back home. My father asked him to visit. He will stay a few days and then leave."
Driver.
Jeremy swayed. It felt like his voice was tightly squeezed shut.
The man smiled.
"A driver, huh? Walk in barefoot. Do not dirty my carpet."
He walked barefoot into the luxurious living room. A pair of children rushed into Don's arms, demanding affection.
Then the boy wrinkled his nose.
"Daddy, why did you bring a beggar inside?"
Jeremy awkwardly pulled at his wrinkled clothes. His heart trembled hard.
Don Herman smiled.
"Do not talk nonsense. Mr. Clark, take the driver upstairs. Have him washed up and changed."
Hot water ran over his body. Only then did Jeremy realize he was shaking all over.
The rumors were real.
She had built a second home behind his back. Their children did not even know he was their real father.
After changing into clean driver clothes, he saw Laura standing at the door smoking a cigarette, waiting for him.
Jeremy asked in a trembling voice, "Do you not want to explain this to me?"
She slowly exhaled.
"He is the son of a multinational company CEO. It's just an act. Once I secure my position, I will return home to reunite with you."
He took a deep breath.
"And the act includes my three children?"
Laura paused. Ash fell onto her skirt.
"If the children stay in the country with you, what can you give them?" Her voice turned harder. "Will they end up like your parents did, dying easily from one failed deal?"
"I love you, Jeremy." Her tone softened again. "I swear I never stopped."
Five years. This was the sentence he most wanted to hear.
However, now it felt like needles piercing through his ears.
When they looked at each other, he saw guilt in her eyes. However, what stood out more was certainty.
She was certain he would not expose himself. He would not embarrass her. Thus, she did not even bother to warn him not to misspeak.
Instead, she said, "I will take you to see the third child. Don treats all three children like his own. You should thank him."
Thank him.
Thank the man who took his wife and children.
"After seeing the children, go back home in a few days." Laura's voice lowered. "My father and the BBQ restaurant need you."
He was pushed into a bedroom. He saw Don holding his youngest child and feeding him from a bottle.
"Baby," Don said while teasing the child, "does my milk taste good?"
Jeremy's nails dug into his palm until blood appeared. It could not compare to even a fraction of the pain in his chest.
He held onto the wall just to stand steady.
At that moment, Laura's phone rang. She went outside to answer it.
The moment the door closed, Don's gentle expression turned cold and indifferent.
Jeremy suddenly realized something. This man knew who he was.
As expected, the next second, Don spoke coldly.
"I thought you would obediently stay back home forever, Jeremy Lane."
"Why do you not guess why your three children all call me dad?"
