Chapter1
The ideal birthday party. ELORA'S POV "Pink or black, my princess?", The make-up artist stretched two eye liners before her. "Which one do you think would look best on me?", I asked her, since she knew more than me when it came to things like this. Plus, I barely ever put on makeup, except on rare occasions like this - my 18th birthday party. "I think the black one would complement your hazel eyes better", she suggested. "Black it is, then", I smiled at her, and she went to work immediately. As she worked on my face, I stared at the reflection of myself on the custom made mirror. "What a lucky girl", I almost blurted in mock envy. Who would've thought that an orphaned Omega like me would be privileged to be treated like royalty? I'd lived this kind of luxury lifestyle since the Alpha and Luna of Zecrim pack basically adopted me after the death of my parents, but I was never used to it. I always wondered what would've happened if they weren't kind enough to take me in. I was always moved by the attention, the comfort and the love I got from them... A knock on the door woke me up from my reverie. "Pardon me, ladies. Am I interrupting? I just wanted to check on my woman", Bryan said as he poked his head inside and eventually traipsed into the dressing room. I couldn't help but smile. Speaking of love, there came the love of my life, and future Alpha of Zecrim pack... "Oh, no no. You can come in, my prince. We were already through with her", the make-up artist took a bow before exiting the room, her girls following her out, leaving him alone with me. "So you mean to tell me that you couldn't wait a little more to see me? You just had to use your charm to have your way?" I teased him with a smile on my face as he turned the rolling chair to make me face him. "I know you wouldn't believe me, but the thirty minutes I spent away from you felt like thirty years. You know the farther away you are from me, the less oxygen that goes into my life. That's why I call you my lifeline," he spoke with so much honey in his mouth, my smile turned into a wide, blushing grin. Bryan always had a way to make me weak in the knees with his words. Always. Although we only started dating four years ago, I always knew him as my husband as far back as I could remember. From when we were little, he was always protective of me. He'd never said no to me, and I couldn't see myself loving any other person but him. "Are you ready to meet your guests? Is your speech ready?", He asked with concern. "Everything is ready, but I... I haven't done this before, Bryan. What if I-" "Shhh," he put his forefinger over my lips to stop me from saying anymore. "It's your birthday, and there's nothing to be scared of. People came to celebrate you, and all you need to do is to say hi. That's all", he shrugged. "I wish it was that easy", I mumbled in anxiety. "It is, if you think about it too much", I squeezed my shoulders gently. This was why I loved him. He made everything simple. "Maybe...", He leaned towards me, until I could feel his breath on me, "... Maybe a kiss would make you feel better?", His voice turned into a husky whisper that did not fail to turn me on. I knew that if I stared into his eyes, I'd wet my gown. "Bryan, I'm trying to be serious here. Stop playing around-" His soft, plum lips met my lips, and they shut me up immediately. I wanted to break away, but I just couldn't resist the feeling I got from his lips. I wanted more... I wrapped my arms around his waist and dragged him closer to me in search of more. We toyed with tongues in a very sexy way. A haunting thought crossed my mind, and I abruptly broke thr kiss. He looked at me with confusion in his eyes. "What's wrong?", He questioned. "I'm… scared", I muttered. "And what are you scared of?", He frowned. "The people…", I answered, my eyes downcast on the ground. "What about the people-" "Don't act like you don't know, Bryan. Your people hate me. They always have. The elders of the pack are dissatisfied with your relationship with me. The men and women have long concluded that the royal family is mad for allowing their only son fall in love with an Omega. The young beautiful ladies who are daughters of Betas loathe me for taking their rightful husband. I…", I couldn't say anymore as I began to feel a lump on my throat. Ever since I was brought into this world, it had been drilled in me one way or the other that I wasn't met for any good thing. My parents were poor Omegas who lived a miserable life before they died a mysterious death. No one cared about me for months, despite being too young to fend for myself. When the royal family heard about me and took me in, it felt like a dream. My life changed drastically, but the trauma from being an Omega never left me. When the pack heard about the adoption, they were quite pleased, seeing that the royal family had good thoughts for the weak. Their satisfaction with the Alpha and Luna began to wade when they began Bryan and I together, all the time. "Why should the weak mingle with royal blood like they're siblings?" "I know the royal family has good intentions, but shouldn't they create boundaries between the heir and this… thing?" "Look… she's eating the same thing he's eating. I bet she's forgotten how poor her parents were before they died" The gossips never ended whenever I left the palace with Bryan. But he didn't seem to care. He treated me like we both came from the same mother. Well, until the night he kissed me on my 16th birthday… More brows got raised when they saw us both holding hands like a couple. They laighed off the fact that we were dating, until the news came out. An agitation rose up from the pack immediately. I vividly remember eavesdropping on the meeting the elders had with the Alpha and Prince Bryan. "My Lord, we cannot allow this young man to keep seeing that girl. She's not fit to be with him", they pointed. "Why?" "Why else? She's an Omega! She's not fit for royalty. There are many well-to-do betas in the pack. He can pick their ripe daughters. Not Elora" "What if he keeps seeing her until he's ready for marriage and he picks her as… No! My Lord, the Moon Goddess forbids it that an Omega becomes the Luna of this empire! We shall not allow it, my Lord!", They argued. "I shall choose whoever I want to marry, and my heart chooses Elora. I love her, and none of you are going to stop it", he stood his ground and walked out on them. Two years had passed, and the elders were still against him marrying me. The pack hated me even more. What was I going to do if he proposed? How were they going to deal with it- "Elora!!", The loud call and the gentle squeeze on my arm stunned me out my sad reverie. "Look at me! Look at me…", he made me face him. "Can you stop worrying about something that doesn't even matter. You're the one I love, no matter what. There's nothing they say or do that's going to kill my love for you. My heart belongs to you, and you're mine", he assured me, his eyes hinting seriousness. "But-" "No "buts", Elora. Today is for you. Why don't you enjoy it?", He said and as if his soothing words were not enough, the feeling of his lips on mine again calmed me down. "Elora, are you re... Oh,. I think we just interrupted something here!", The Luna had a mischievous smile on his face as she walked in on us kissing, Alpha Lewis right behind her. We finally broke the kiss, and I could feel my cheeks burning red in embarrassment. "These two lovebirds just can't have enough of themselves", Uncle Lewis teased and I was totally flushed. Bryan on the other hand was enjoying the moment. "Well, we were sorry to interrupt, but it's time for your speech. The guests are waiting for you", she announced, and I got out of the chair gingerly. I was led into the hall by my family, and the guests stood up in a standing ovation to welcome me, as the custom demanded. I was led by my boyfriend to the stage, and only then did the ovation die down, everyone waiting to hear what I had to say. I stared into the crowd, and resentment was all I saw. No one smiled. It was as though they were forced to come. The eyes thar stared back at me held no form of happiness for me. Everyone wanted this to be done and over with. "First of all, I want to say that you all look very stunning. It's like you all connived to take the spotlight from me", I teased, and had a nervous laugh in a bid to break the ice. But, just as I should've expected, I didn't receive a single smile from the crowd, let alone laughter. "Tough crowd", I said to myself and cleared my throat. "Secondly, I want to thank you all for celebrating a new chapter of my life. I want to thank the Alpha and his wife, our Luna, for treating me as their own child for the past seventeen years. I want to thank my best friend for being there for me, and teaching me how kick boys in the groin if they ever touched me inappropriately," I taunted, and Maggie's laughter alongside the royal family's were the only sounds that echoed throughout the hall. "Go, girl!!", I heard Maggie scream from the sidelines. "And most importantly, I want to thank the love of my life - my prince and baby, the one who owns my heart..." I wanted to continue, but the sudden gasps and murmurs from the crowd began to bother me. They kept pointing over my shoulder, their faces hinting surprise. I turned to my back and was shocked to see Bryan on one knee, a ring stretched to me. It took me a while to realize that he was...he was proposing to me. I couldn't believe this! "Look, I didn't write any speech for this, but I know I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Please make the happiest wolf alive and marry me, Elora", he pleaded, his blue eyes, making my heart ripple. "Say yes! Say yes!! Say yes!!!", Maggie chanted and cheered. I wanted to say yes badly, but the silence murmurs from the guests choked me. From the corner of my eyes, I could see the disgust on their faces. They were not having any of this. "No, I won't take this!!", An infuriated elder sprang up to feet and approached the podium. "Elder Luther-" "My Lord, this should not be happening! How dare Bryan insult us by proposing to an Omega in front of everyone?! This is the peak of disrespect!!", As he yelled, his veins popped from his neck. "She's also a werewolf like us, Luther-" "No, my Lord! She's not fit to be the Luna of this pack. We shall not allow the prince to rule us with an Omega as his wife!! Stop this nonsense now!", He ordered, and the crowd sided him. He turned to Bryan immediately. "You better get up and come back to your senses-" "I love Elora, Luther!!, Bryan flared up immediately, shocking the whole hall for speaking to an Alpha in that manner. "What is your problem is she's an Omega or a Beta?! Does it not matter if I love her?!!", He questioned in rage. I wished the ground could open up and swallow me right now. I couldn't deal with this. Everyone was going to blame me and accuse me of brainwashing the prince. "Bryan, please stop…", I begged him as he tugged at his arm, tears rolling down my eyes. "It's enough-" "You have a lot of appropriate women to pick from, Bryan! It will not be this one!", Elder Luther warned. "It will be this one, and there's nothing you're going to do about it!!', he stood his ground, his eyes red with rage at this point. "It's enough, Bryan! Please!", I begged desperately, my eyes getting more blurry than ever. "You're going to choose between her and this pack, Bryan! Which one do you love more?! Which one would you stand by?!!" "I would gladly choose-" He was just about to say something that would've cost him his throne when we heard an unusual noise outside. A guard barged into the hall, panting. His face was stained with blood, and the terror in his eyes made things worse. "They're here!! The Lycans are here!! Jace has finally come for us-" before he could finish his sentence, a sword surged through him from behind, causing him to fall to the ground with a sword in his stomach.
