Chapter 1 Title:“Eighteen Candles, One Shadow"
The nightmare always began with silver eyes. Tiana Sands never saw the face behind them. Never heard a name. Never understood why the dream kept returning. But every time she closed her eyes, she found herself standing in the same dark forest beneath the same full moon. Alone. Cold. Afraid. The wind whispered through the trees around her, carrying sounds she couldn't quite understand. Voices. Distant voices. Calling her name. "Tiana..." She spun around. No one was there. The forest stretched endlessly in every direction. "Tiana..." The voice came again. Closer this time. A chill crawled up her spine. Her bare feet sank into damp earth as she slowly backed away. Something was watching her. She couldn't see it. Couldn't hear it. But she could feel it. The sensation wrapped around her like a living thing. Patient. Powerful. Waiting. Then she saw them. Two glowing silver eyes staring at her from between the trees. Her breath caught. The eyes didn't blink. Didn't move. They simply watched. The strange thing was that they didn't feel unfamiliar. They felt... Known. As though she had spent her entire life searching for them. The realization terrified her. A low growl echoed through the darkness. The trees began shaking. The ground trembled beneath her feet. The silver eyes moved closer. Closer. Closer. And just before she could finally see who they belonged to— Tiana woke up. She sat upright in bed, gasping for breath. Moonlight streamed through her bedroom window. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. For several seconds she remained frozen. Listening. The house was silent. No footsteps. No voices. Nothing. Just the familiar creaks of an old house settling in the early morning hours. Tiana dragged a hand through her hair. "Not again." The nightmare had followed her for years. Ever since she was fourteen. At first it had appeared once every few months. Then every few weeks. Now it came almost every night. And each time it felt more real. More vivid. More important. Her eyes drifted toward the digital clock on her bedside table. 5:00 a.m. Exactly. Her stomach tightened. Every single time. No matter when she fell asleep. No matter how tired she was. The dream always ended at exactly five in the morning. The consistency should have been impossible. Yet it kept happening. Tiana swung her legs over the edge of the bed and stood. Today was supposed to be special. Today she turned eighteen. Most girls would have been excited. Instead, she felt uneasy. For weeks she'd carried a strange feeling she couldn't explain. Like something was approaching. Something inevitable. Every day that feeling grew stronger. And now that her birthday had finally arrived, the sensation was almost overwhelming. She walked toward the window. Outside, darkness still covered the world. The forest behind the property looked endless beneath the moonlight. Tiana had spent her entire life beside those woods. Normally they comforted her. Tonight they felt different. Alive. Watching. Waiting. The same way she felt watched. A shiver ran through her. The feeling wasn't new. In fact, she'd experienced it for as long as she could remember. As a child she would occasionally catch glimpses of movement near the trees. A shadow disappearing behind a trunk. A figure standing at the edge of a field. Someone watching before vanishing when she looked directly at them. Everyone told her she imagined it. Eventually she started believing them. At least until recently. The feeling had become impossible to ignore. Almost daily she found herself glancing over her shoulder. Certain someone stood behind her. Certain eyes followed her every movement. She hated it. Hated feeling paranoid. Hated feeling vulnerable. Most of all, she hated not knowing why. Determined to shake the feeling off, she pushed aside the curtain. Then froze. Footprints. Fresh footprints marked the soil beneath her bedroom window. Her pulse quickened. The impressions were large. Much larger than normal. And there were several of them. Tiana frowned. She unlocked the window and pushed it open slightly. Cold air rushed inside. The scent of damp earth drifted upward. Along with something else. Something wild. Animalistic. The unfamiliar scent disappeared almost instantly. Her eyes followed the tracks. They led toward the forest. Then abruptly vanished. Not faded. Not turned. Vanished. As though whoever made them had simply disappeared. A chill crept down her spine. "Nope." She immediately shut the window. Locked it. And stepped back. There was no way she was dealing with mysterious footprints before breakfast. Absolutely not. Half an hour later, after showering and dressing, she headed downstairs. The smell reached her before she entered the kitchen. Pancakes. Real pancakes. A smile tugged at her lips. Some traditions never changed. The kitchen glowed with warmth and light. Rachel stood beside the stove flipping pancakes while humming softly to herself. A bright birthday crown sat crookedly on her head. Tiana burst out laughing. Rachel looked up. "What?" "You look ridiculous." Rachel gasped dramatically. "I'll have you know this crown is beautiful." "It looks like it lost a fight with a glue gun." Rachel pointed a spatula at her. "Watch it." Tiana laughed harder. The familiar exchange eased some of the tension in her chest. Rachel placed a mountain of pancakes in front of her. "There." She smiled warmly. "Happy birthday, sweetheart." Emotion flickered briefly through Tiana. Birthdays always made her think about her parents. Especially milestone birthdays. They should have been here. Her father would have insisted on embarrassing speeches. Her mother would have taken hundreds of photos. Instead, it was just her and Rachel. Like always. Rachel seemed to notice her mood. She reached across the table and squeezed Tiana's hand. "They'd be proud of you." Tiana swallowed hard. "Thanks." For a moment neither spoke. Then Rachel suddenly looked away. A strange expression crossed her face. Worry. Fear. Gone almost immediately. But Tiana noticed. "Aunt Rachel?" Rachel forced a smile. "Yes?" "Is something wrong?" The older woman hesitated. Only for a second. Yet that second felt important. "No." The answer came too quickly. Too automatically. Tiana frowned. Rachel never lied well. Something was bothering her. Something she wasn't saying. Before Tiana could press further, Rachel stood and turned back toward the stove. Conversation over. But the uneasy feeling returned stronger than ever. Because deep down, Tiana knew one thing with absolute certainty. Her eighteenth birthday wasn't important only to her. Someone else had been waiting for this day too. And somewhere beyond the forest... they were finally running out of time. Tiana couldn't concentrate for the rest of the day. No matter how hard she tried, her thoughts kept returning to the footprints beneath her window. And to Rachel's strange behavior. Something was wrong. She could feel it. The sensation lingered like a storm cloud hanging over her head. Every smile her aunt gave seemed forced. Every conversation felt incomplete. Several times Tiana caught Rachel staring at her with an expression she couldn't understand. It almost looked like sadness. As if she knew something Tiana didn't. As if she were preparing to lose her. The thought sent an uncomfortable chill through her. By late afternoon, the birthday preparations were nearly complete. Colorful decorations filled the living room. Food covered every available surface in the kitchen. Neighbors and family friends began arriving shortly after six. The house quickly filled with laughter and conversation. Normally Tiana enjoyed gatherings. Tonight she felt disconnected from everything. Like she was watching someone else's life. The strange feeling in her chest had grown stronger as the day progressed. Now it pulsed steadily beneath her ribs. Waiting. Watching. Calling. As the sun slowly descended toward the horizon, Tiana slipped outside for a moment alone. The evening air felt cool against her skin. She stepped onto the back porch and looked toward the forest. A golden glow painted the treetops. Shadows stretched across the ground. For a brief moment everything appeared peaceful. Then she felt it. The unmistakable sensation of being watched. Her body went rigid. Slowly, she lifted her gaze. A figure stood between the trees. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Motionless. Too far away to identify. Yet somehow she knew he was staring directly at her. Her breath caught. The stranger didn't move. Didn't wave. Didn't approach. He simply watched. The same way she had always felt watched. The realization struck like lightning. Every strange moment from her childhood suddenly rushed back. Every glimpse of movement. Every shadow. Every unexplained feeling. The figure took a single step backward. Then another. And disappeared into the darkness between the trees. Gone. Just like that. "Tiana!" Rachel's voice shattered the moment. Tiana jumped. When she looked back toward the forest, the stranger had vanished. Her heart pounded wildly. "Coming!" She forced herself to turn around and head back inside. But the image remained burned into her mind. Someone had been there. Someone real. The birthday celebration continued. People laughed. Music played. Children ran through the house. Yet Tiana barely heard any of it. Her attention kept drifting toward the windows. Toward the forest. Toward the feeling that tonight was only the beginning. Hours later, everyone gathered around the dining room table. A large birthday cake sat in the center. Eighteen candles flickered brightly. Their warm glow illuminated the room. Rachel smiled. "Make a wish." Everyone cheered. Tiana stared at the candles. A hundred wishes passed through her mind. Money. Happiness. Success. Love. None of them felt right. Instead, one thought surfaced above all the others. I want the truth. The wish surprised her. Yet it felt necessary. Important. She took a deep breath and blew out the candles. The flames vanished instantly. At that exact moment, every light in the house went out. Darkness swallowed the room. Several people gasped. Someone laughed nervously. "The power's out!" The room erupted into conversation. But Tiana wasn't listening. Because in the brief moment before darkness consumed everything, she had seen something. A pair of silver eyes. Outside the dining room window. Watching her. The same eyes from her dreams. The same eyes she had seen her entire life. A chill swept through her body. The lights flickered back on seconds later. The room returned to normal. Everyone resumed talking. Laughing. Joking about bad timing. Nobody else seemed concerned. Nobody else had seen them. Slowly, Tiana turned toward the window. Nothing stood outside. The silver eyes were gone. Yet deep inside, she knew what she had seen. And somewhere beyond the forest, hidden beneath the gathering darkness, a powerful Alpha wolf lifted his head toward the night sky. For eighteen years he had waited. For eighteen years he had protected her from the shadows. Now the waiting was over. The mate bond had awakened. Soon, Tiana Sands would learn the truth about herself. And when she did, neither of their worlds would ever be the same again.
