Chapter Two: Oliver

‘You’re a useless brother. Your sister working hard to make up the Bill’s. She pays for your school and all you do is waste it.’ I have been plagued with these words an more from the moment my father left us. I want to over come them. I want them to go away but I have accepted them. Found you can drink them away and that’s what I have been doing lately. I mean yeah grades have dropped but who cares I’m not going anywhere. I still went to school, I still participate but I don’t worry about it. How could I. I know that is what I think on a regular basis but there are days where I can fight them. There are days where I am a good brother and I do everything Molly needs me to do. Those have been scarce since finals. I am just stressed and it doesn’t help she isn’t home. I mean I cant blame her. I eat like a cow and not to mention the Bill’s. Grandparents left us the house so we don’t have a mortgage on it but there are so many Bill’s she is paying for. I mean all she asks me to do it look after Alisa, I mean that is one of the easiest things to do. She keeps the house cleaned stocked and even makes sure we will have enough money for Bill’s. She tightly budgets to the point she knows where every penny has gone. And here I am, going to be a business degree student and I cant even draw this graft properly. I throw my pencil purposely across the room before I took a deep breath. This is pointless. ‘Why work your sister has it covered, why do you have to worry about anything.’ The voice I try so hard to keep out keeps nagging me. “Oliver, you okay man.” A buddy spoke as he brought me my pencil back. “Yeah this graph is just not making any sense.” I told him “I think you should lay off the alcohol dude.” He spoke flipping the graph. It was upside down the whole time. Makes sense why the words where upside down to. “Callista says you sister is burning out bad. She doesn’t know your out with me drinking don’t worry but she needs help. Callista says her health looks to be deteriorating bad.” “I know, I haven’t been all with it this week. The stress of exams and the fact this is final year.” I spoke rubbing my hands through my hair worried. My sister is a strong one she always has been. She blames herself for parents death and now works almost 24/7. I cant believe I didn’t see the alarm this morning so I could be up to feed Alisa. Wait how did she get the money for the breakfast. ‘She’s a liar, a cheat. She doesn’t give you a lot of lunch money yet she is out getting breakfast for everyone. Where is that money, where is it coming from.’ “Dude, how about we both find another way to relieve the stress.” He spoke breaking the voice. I nodded gently trying not to take what the thing said to heart. “I think I can agree with that. Last night out?” “Nope, Callista's got a date with me.” He spoke with a chuckle. Right that meant I actually had to be home to baby sit. I cant f**k this day up. I already ruined the last few mornings for Molly. “Forgot Molly’s pulling another double tonight. I got to go get Alisa from school.” I said looking at my watch. It was one of my fathers. “Hey you missed the last bus. I’ll give you a lift.” He spoke. ‘If your sister only had one more job she could have gotten you a car to.’ “Yeah, that be great.” “No problem. I know how it is.” He spoke helping me gather my books. “maybe once your sisters done with the Bill’s she can get you a car to.” “Maybe.” I spoke not even realizing what I had said. Something chuckled in my head. “Wow man, wow.” My buddy looked at me disappointed. I had to think of something. “What? She does deserve a better car. The one we got is a gas guzzler.” I spoke he looked confused. Good. “You said ‘Maybe once you done school you can get your sister a better car.’” “That was not what I said.” He spoke with a chuckled. “I said Maybe once your sisters done with the bill she can get you a new car.” “Oh hell no. She won’t get me a car.” I spoke with a mental sigh. I can right this one. “If there is anything she is getting it a lifetime subscription to a spa.” “That’s more like the answer I was looking for.” His buddy chuckled. “I wish there was a way to help her out. I mean she is working so hard and here I am stealing her brother away to have drinks.” “Well let’s change that. Maybe we can hang out at the house instead.” I spoke as we walked to his car. “I have cause her to pay Callista extra due to being away. I mane helped out I was able to sell a few if my books. That will pay for the overtime she put in and maybe take her and Alisa for supper. They really need to be pampered.” “Haha, there’s the Oli she knows.” I cringed when he used her nickname for me. That was hers alone. No one else was aloud to use it. He knew that as he was my best friend and only ever said it when it concerned her “Haha,” I spoke hiding everything I can. The demon inside me going on and on. I wish there was a way to shut him up. Maybe I should tell Molly about him. Her magic could possibly hold it at bay. If not then at least we could think of a way together. But still how did she buy breakfast out. I thought she worked at the restaurant that night. If she did she should have been home, well before the morning. What was she doing out at night specially that late. Was she hiding something from me? “You bud you okay? You seem to be lost somewhere.” His voice broke my thoughts. I was happy he did. Man the stuff this thing can make me think of feel. “Just trying to run over the draft’s and charts in my head. I got the exam in a week time here.” I told him with a heavy sigh. He looked at me a nodded before we turned into Alisa's school. I hopped out of his mustang and raced into the school. There Alisa was kicking her feet back and forward waiting for me. “I’m sorry Alisa, I got lost in studying.” “Its okay.” She spoke as she jumped off the bench and walked towards me. I reached for her backpack but she just walk by. I sighed, Molly was always good with her. I wished it was working for her and she was here. “You coming Oliver?” “I’m right behind you.” I called quickly stepping towards her. She smiled as she reached for my hand. This caused a smile to form on my face as I grasped her hand gently. “Brother,” She gently spoke as we left the school. I looked down at her as we stopped walking. “Would you ever hurt me intentionally?” “Never.” I spoke upset. “I would never ever hurt you. I’m your big brother Alisa and with that comes a lot of responsibility. I am your guardian and protector. I am your shield from any bully.” “Is that the same for Molly.” She asked looking up at me like she was about to cry. I nodded to her before she looked away. “Why does she have to work so hard. She is always at work and when she isn’t she is always cleaning. Oliver teach me to clean the house so I can help her.” “Your to young Alisa.” I told her as I tried to encourage her to walk. She wouldn’t however. “I don’t care. You cant help her because your always protecting us and school work. Someone has to help her. Even Callista has been helping where she can.” Alisa cried. I stopped and looked at her. Where was all this coming from. For 5 years she has always been the one with a smile, the one who listened carefully to everything we said and asked and not once did she complain. I felt how hurt she was, but why was she like this now. “Alisa please stop crying. Your to young to clean but I promise I will try and help clean up okay.” I told her kneeling down so we where almost eye level. “If you can help I will call you to help me okay.” “Okay,” She smiled happily at me. I cleared her tears before kissing her forehead. She reached her arms up causing me to lift her up with ease. This concerned me, she was way to light. Was she not eating properly. What was Molly doing, why wasn’t she making proper meals for her. She needed more food and must not be getting it. “Oliver is Brekan taking us home?” “Yeah,” I spoke hopping that was the right answer. She smiled as I put her down outside the car before opening the door. She crawled into the back once I moved the seat forward for her to get back there. “He little sis, how was school?” My buddy said as he reached back and helped her buckle in. I waited till he was back sitting properly before I pushed the seat back. “School was okay.” She said a little upset. “We had show and tell today and I forgot.” “Well there’s always next week.” Brekan spoke as he pulled out of the school. How could Molly forget, she should have remembered her show and tell. What was she doing. “Yeah.” Alisa smiled happily. “Brekan can you play some music?” “Absolutely, what are you in the mood for.” He asked as he grabbed his phone. She reached out for it and he passed it back. Soon she had something pop playing. I wasn’t listening at all. My mind was else where. ‘She is useless, just get rid of her.’ ‘No, she has made a mistake that’s all. She is working so hard lately she has just made a mistake.’ I fight back. ‘She is going to pull you into a ditch.’ ‘She just needs some rest.’ I said knowing Molly would never let that happen. ‘She uses money for herself but cant get anything for you. She bought breakfast for yourself and if you had been up she would have had it for herself.’ ‘There has to be an explanation for that. She did give it freely to us.’ ‘But she bought it for herself. You cant even get lunch at the cafeteria every day of the week.’ ‘That’s true but we don’t like some of the stuff during the week.’ I said trying to make an argument. ‘So what.’ He was also right. He didn’t even get the option to eat it if he wanted to. He was aloud lunch out twice a week and that was it. That’s all she gave him money for. There had to be money she was stashing away for something that’s why she has budgeted but got herself breakfast. Why was she holding back. Why was she getting stuff for her. We needed it more. Alisa was to skinny she needed more food but yet she wasn’t getting it. “Oliver.” Her voice broke my argument. What was I thinking. I cant believe what is happening to me. I have to discuss this with Molly. “Sorry Alisa, thanks for the ride Braken. Hope date night is good for you.” I spoke quickly getting out. The two looked at me a little worried but shrugged it off. “Oliver what’s for snack?” Alisa asked as she was getting out of the car. I smiled not really knowing what to tell her. She raced off to the house as I shut the door to the car. Braken was chuckling to himself as he drove off. I sighed as I swung my bag on my back and followed. She had the door open a d was in with her favorite TV show. I sighed placing my bag on a kitchen chair before heading to the kitchen. “Grill cheese?” I called to Alisa. Looks like groceries are low. Why didn’t she stop for some before work yesterday. What am I suppose to do to feed Alisa. “I love Grill Cheese.” She called to me. I smiled happily as I began to cook. Maybe I should put the order in for her. We could get it dropped off, I had money to pay for that. ‘She will just tell you money shouldn’t be wasted.’ That annoying voice spoke. I have had enough of him today. I blocked everything out as I focused on the sandwich. It took a bit to cook but I had them planted and walking over to her quickly. “Yeah, you’re the best Oliver.” She smiled happily at me as she grabbed her plate and dipped her grill cheese before taking a bite. Ketchup getting all over her lips. I just smiled as she licked them off. “Enjoy.” I smiled as I sat there and through of dinner. There wasn’t to much there to cook right now. I mean there was a easy cook lasagna in the freezer all I had to do it throw it in the oven. ‘She should bring you something home.’ “Can was have lasagna tonight?” Alisa asked. I smiled at her and nodded. She was always so easy to feed for supper. Callista loved how she could make anything and Alisa would love it. “I think there is one in the freezer.” I smiled at her. I got up and went to check. Sure enough there was one all ready and waiting. I quickly read the instructions and planned when to put it in. This would easily make a lunch for me and Molly for tomorrow. Oh wait its Saturday tomorrow. Molly has work at the other….no wait she has to be at the office…….but…..ahhh this was so confusing. ‘She probably doesn’t even work all those jobs she says she does. I bet she is meeting someone outside with money.’ ‘How could someone work that many jobs. I bet she is lying. Getting food out with a secret admirer.’ ‘And yet here you are about to make lasagna.’ I was mad as my hands gripped the fridge. I was so mad I actually ripped the handle right off. “Oliver.” Alisa called worried. She must have heard the bang or something. “All good little sis. Freezers stuff shifted and fell out.” I called to her as I quickly fastened the fridge handle back with magic. This place was falling apart. ‘She should get another line and actually work in stead of playing around. This place could have been fixed up.’ The voice chuckled. It was right she should. ‘tell her, tell her to stop fooling around.’ ‘We will tell her the moment she comes home.’ I spoke before I looked over to see Alisa staring at me. Fear etched her face. “Oliver.” She spoke scared. Fear took me as I realised what I had done. I went over and picked her up. Holding her close I closed my eyes and just held her. I cant believe what I was saying or thinking for that matter. “it’s okay Alisa.” I spoke to her as she nodded gently. I knew she wasn’t convinced but to tell you the truth neither was I. So much has been happening and now this. Why now. I needed to graduate I needed to get a good job I had to relieve Molly of all the burden so she can get to school. I mean Yes we graduated and all but she needed to further her studies. “Oliver, what’s happening to you?” She asked gently. “I don’t know Alisa, but don’t worry I’ll take with Molly. She will be able to fix me.” I told her as I put her down. She nodded as she handed me her plate. I smiled as I took it from her and started dishes. I cleaned up the counters before heading to the laundry room. I found some clothing in need of folding. Carefully placing them into a basket I took them to the living room and began to fold. Once folded I placed them away before getting supper going. I quickly wiped the bathrooms and pulled out the vacuume. I was done when the timer went of. I pulled out the lasagna and began to dish us up. “Alisa supper.” “Coming brother.” Alisa said happily as she came bounding in. She sat in her chair and began to eat. She was so happy and that made me smile. With a gentle sigh I sat down with her. We quietly ate together just sharing smiles. She raced off to her bedroom while I cleaned up and contained the rest of the food. I began to do dishes while I listened to her playing in her room. “Get ready for bed Alisa.” I called up to her as I saw the time was getting to be around 8. I heard her begin to clean up her room as I put the last dish in the rack. Cleaning the sinks I went to help her get ready for bed. She already had her pajamas on by the time I got to her. Her room was still messy but she was cleaning it. “Brother, what are we going to do Tomorrow?” she asked as she kept cleaning. “We will have to see tomorrow. I would love to study but that doesn’t mean we cant head to the park or something.” I told her with a shrug. The evil voice was about to say something but I pushed it away using magic. It wasn’t the best way to deal with it but it’s the only way tonight. This evil was just not letting up today. I knew I was going to be exhausted by the end of this day. “The park sounds nice.” She smiled at me and I knew that was where we where going tomorrow. I mean would be nice if Molly could join us even for a little bit but I knew that was not going to happen. Again I found myself pushing the evil out again. “Well then maybe we will go tomorrow.” I told her as we both walked towards the bathroom. She quickly brushed her teeth before cleaning her face. We walked back to her room after using the toilet and I tucked her in. “I’m worried about Molly.” She spoke as I tucked her in. “Don’t you worry about her. I am here for that okay.” I spoke kissing the top of her head. “Now off to sleep so you have energy to go to the park tomorrow.” “Okay Oli.” She spoke as she rolled over and closed her eyes. I smiled as I chuckled to myself. I shut her light off but left the door partially opened. I left the hall way light on as I went to the kitchen table to start some studying. Was easier now that the graph wasn’t upside down. By the time I looked up it was 11pm. I knew Alisa had to be asleep so I gathered my things and dropped them in my bed before leaving to close her bedroom door. I smiled happily as I walked back to my room where I sat down on my bed. Maybe an hour or so in I heard my phone go off but I just ignored it. I was so tired and I knew it was because of the evil in me. I had been pushing it away this whole time. My eyes closed again. I was woken to a large noise. I didn’t think nothing of it. I thought it was maybe a something outside as I rolled over. I heard my name and began to stretch. Something was wrong. “Oliver.” Alisa screamed my name. I was up and out of the bed faster then sea gull on a fry. I raced into the kitchen to see Molly began to rock as her hand went to her head. She was reaching for her stuff. “Molly.” I screamed as I wrapped my arms around her waist as I pulled her over to a chair. I sat in front of her and tried to get her to focus on me. “Molly look at me.” “I’m fine just give me a minute or two.” She spoke out of it. I was concerned till I remembered the last time this happened. “Did you eat?” she looked at me and I knew right away she hadn’t. Why was she so stupid. The doctor specifically told her she had to make sure to eat and drink lots throughout the day if she was going to work as much as she is. I was quickly whipping a sandwich together for her. I placed it in front of her before I gathered her things and walked them up to her room. “Molly.” Alisa screamed as I had placed her stuff on the floor by her bed. I heard a bang and knew I shouldn’t have left her. I raced down the stairs and over to the kitchen where I saw her sprawled out on the floor. Alisa was there crying as she was shaking her. “Molly.” I cried as I raced over and lifted her to my arms. We raced her back to her room. Alisa was at my side, tears staining her face. I was so upset. Why hadn’t I paid more attention to her. I was the one that was suppose to protect her and here she is passed out in my arms. I laid her on her bed before turning to Alisa. “I need you to grab her a bottle of water.” “Okay.” She said racing away. I quickly changed her clothing for pajamas and tucked her in before Alisa came back. She passed me the bottle before she raced to the other side of the bed and quickly got in beside her. “Molly.” “Its okay Alisa. Your sister is tough. She is just exhausted. I promise.” I spoke trying to relax. I was so worried and scared. She has passed out once before when she first stared working so many jobs. I raced her to the hospital. He was so mad she was working so hard and told me in the long run it was going to kill her. He told me to make sure she was eating and drinking all day. Even if it was small amounts it would help her keep going and when she can sleep she needs to get as much as possible. Alisa fell asleep quickly beside her allowing me to race to my room to grab my phone. I raced back to her and sat down with her. I held her one hand as I opened my phone with the other. A missed call from her. Damn it, I should have answered the phone but no. I was to busy sleeping while my poor sister probably needed a ride home. My eyes fell on my sister as she slept. A pain in my heart seeing her like this. Her wrist wrapped…..wait…..when the hell did that happen. I lifted it up and inspected it. The wrap was dirty showing she had it like this for a while. I sighed angrily as I placed it back. She was wounded and I was doing nothing to help. Ahhh. I pushed the Demon away again as I rose and began to pace. Why was she doing this, she was hurt and still pushing herself. Doesn’t she know I need her here, alive. Alisa needs her big sister and truth be told I need them both. ‘She is lying to you now.’ It snuck through before I could do anything. I left the room in fear this thing would make me do something bad. I began to shuffle around the kitchen before I started throwing things. I cant believe this. She said she would never get hurt and we would never keep secrets. Ah. She was wounded and didn’t tell me. I mean why should she. She was obviously better then I. What was the need to tell me. She will do her own thing, plus who cares for me. I don’t need anything. I left the kitchen and ran to my room where I pulled out a secret bottle of alcohol and downed the whole contents. I soon was passed out on my bed without a care in the world. The demon inside me laughing to itself but who cares.
