Chapter 1: Rejected Before the Pack
Ava Morgan's POV My eighteenth birthday was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. Instead, it became the day my heart was shattered. The Moon Hall glowed with silver light from hundreds of lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Every unmated wolf in the pack stood gathered beneath the sacred moonstone, waiting for the moment that would change their lives forever. The Mate Ceremony. The night we would discover our fated partners. I stood near the back of the hall, nervously smoothing my blue dress. My palms were damp, and my heart pounded so hard I could barely hear the conversations around me. "Relax," my best friend Lily whispered, nudging my shoulder. "Tonight is your night." I forced a smile. Easy for her to say. My wolf had been restless all day, pacing excitedly inside me. She could sense that something important was about to happen. The large wooden doors opened. Silence instantly fell over the room. Ethan Ryder walked inside. Future Alpha. Golden boy of the Crescent Moon Pack. Every girl in the hall watched him. Including me. Tall, handsome, and confident, Ethan carried himself like the king he would one day become. Then his eyes met mine. The world stopped. A sudden warmth exploded in my chest. My breath caught. My wolf let out a joyful cry. Mate. The word echoed through every part of me. For a moment, happiness flooded my body. I couldn't believe it. The Moon Goddess had chosen Ethan Ryder for me. The future Alpha was my mate. A smile began to form on my lips. But Ethan wasn't smiling. His face had gone completely pale. His jaw tightened. Disbelief flashed across his features. Then disgust. My stomach dropped. Something was wrong. Very wrong. The crowd parted as Ethan strode toward me. Every step felt heavier than the last. Excitement buzzed through the room. I could hear whispers everywhere. "The future Alpha found his mate." "It's Ava Morgan!" "She's so lucky." Lucky. I felt anything but lucky when Ethan stopped in front of me. His cold eyes stared into mine. No affection. No happiness. Nothing. Fear crept into my chest. "Ethan?" I whispered. He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked around at the gathered pack members. Then he spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear. "I reject Ava Morgan as my mate." The words hit me like a physical blow. The hall fell silent. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Surely I had heard him wrong. My ears were ringing. "What?" I whispered. Ethan's expression remained cold. "I reject you." The pain that tore through my chest was unbearable. My wolf howled in agony. Tears instantly filled my eyes. "W-why?" A murmur spread through the crowd. Everyone was watching. Everyone. Ethan crossed his arms. "Because a future Alpha deserves someone stronger." Each word felt like a knife. "You come from one of the weakest families in the pack." I stared at him. Unable to believe what I was hearing. "You'll never be worthy of standing beside me as Luna." Gasps echoed around the hall. Humiliation burned through me. My entire body trembled. The people I had known my whole life were staring at me with pity. Some with amusement. Others with sympathy. I wanted the ground to open beneath me. I wanted to disappear. "Ethan, please..." My voice cracked. For one second, I thought I saw hesitation in his eyes. Then it vanished. "I reject you, Ava Morgan." The mate bond snapped. Pain exploded through my chest. I cried out and collapsed to my knees. My wolf screamed inside me. The agony was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Tears streamed down my face. Yet Ethan simply turned away. Without another word. Without a single glance back. He walked away. Leaving me broken in front of the entire pack. The hall erupted into whispers. I couldn't bear it. The pity. The humiliation. The heartbreak. Slowly, I pushed myself to my feet. My vision blurred with tears. No one stopped me as I ran from the hall. No one called my name. The cool night air hit my face as I stumbled outside. The full moon shone brightly overhead. Once, I had loved looking at it. Now I hated it. My chest ached with every breath. The future I had imagined was gone. Destroyed in a matter of minutes. I wrapped my arms around myself and stared up at the moon. "I won't stay here," I whispered. My voice shook. "But I won't let this destroy me either." For the first time in my life, I made a choice for myself. I would leave the Crescent Moon Pack. Leave Ethan Ryder. Leave every painful memory behind. I didn't know where I was going. I didn't know what awaited me. But somewhere beyond these woods, fate was already preparing a new path. And a man far more powerful than Ethan Ryder was about to enter my life. End of Chapter 1
