Chapter 10: Bound by Blood and Fire

735 Words
Persephone’s body ached, a slow thrum of exhaustion settling into her bones after everything that had happened. The battle was over—for now. The curse had loosened its grip, but the tension in the room was something else entirely. It was him. Hades stood in the doorway, his broad frame filling the space, golden eyes burning with something raw and unrestrained. His bare chest was streaked with dirt and blood from the fight, muscles taut with frustration. His wolf was still on edge, pacing just beneath his skin. For her. "You almost got yourself killed," his voice was low, rough, a barely leashed growl. Persephone straightened, trying to ignore the way her pulse skipped at the possessiveness in his tone. "I handled myself." Hades moved, faster than she could track, his body a blur of darkness before he was in front of her, so close she could feel the heat of him radiating off his skin. His hands braced on either side of her, caging her against the stone wall. "You don’t get to say that," he murmured, his voice dark silk and gravel. His eyes searched hers, fierce, desperate. "Not when I felt every second of your pain. Not when I almost lost you." Persephone swallowed, her breath shallow. She was trapped, not just by his body, but by the way her own traitorous heart beat wildly at his nearness. His scent curled around her—smoky embers, pine, him—making it impossible to think clearly. "You should let me go," she whispered, though even she didn’t sound convincing. His lips tilted into something wicked. "I should," he agreed, but he didn’t move. Instead, he leaned in, his breath warm against her cheek. "But I won’t." His fingers traced a slow, agonizing path up her arm, featherlight, but enough to send a shiver racing down her spine. His hand stopped at her jaw, tilting her face up to his. The air between them crackled, heavy with something wild, something inevitable. "You’re mine," he murmured, his thumb brushing over her lower lip. She should resist. She should shove him away, remind him that she hadn’t accepted the bond. But she didn’t. She couldn’t. His golden eyes darkened as he read her hesitation. And then, he kissed her. It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t patient. It was claiming. A growl rumbled deep in his chest as his lips crashed into hers, one hand sliding to her waist, gripping tight as he pulled her against him. Fire ignited inside her, the bond between them snapping tight, pulling her under. Persephone gasped, and he took the opportunity to deepen the kiss, his tongue sweeping against hers in a way that sent heat pooling low in her belly. His grip tightened as if he was afraid she’d disappear if he let go. But she wasn’t going anywhere. Not when this—this fire, this hunger, this feeling like she was coming undone in his arms—felt like something she had been waiting for her entire life. A small moan escaped her, and Hades snapped. He pushed her against the stone wall, his body pressing against hers, firm and unyielding. His lips left her mouth, trailing a scorching path down her neck, lingering over the spot where his mark should be. His breath was ragged. "Let me mark you." Her mind swam in the haze of want, but somewhere deep inside, fear whispered. If she let him claim her, there would be no going back. She would be bound to him forever. She let out a shaky breath. "I—I can’t." Hades stiffened, his hands flexing against her waist. He pulled back just enough to look at her, golden eyes wild, filled with desperation and something deeper. "You feel it, Persephone," he growled. "You feel us." She did. But that didn’t mean she was ready. Before she could answer, a loud knock shattered the moment. Hades’ growl was pure rage, his body still flush against hers, his wolf clawing beneath the surface. "Alpha," Lucian’s voice came through the door, urgent. "We have a problem." Hades clenched his jaw, his forehead resting against hers for a moment before he pulled away, his touch leaving her cold. "This isn’t over," he murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with a promise. And as much as she wanted to deny it… she knew he was right. This was far from over.
