Chapter 1: The Forest Calls
Persephone Vale has never felt like she truly belonged in Silverbrook. The quiet town, with its predictable routines and familiar faces, feels more like a cage than a home. There’s always been something missing—something calling to her from beyond the towering pines that mark the town’s borders. At night, she dreams of wolves—shadows racing beneath the full moon, silver eyes watching her from the darkness. She hears whispers on the wind, voices that seem to know her name. But every time she wakes, she tells herself it’s nothing. Just her imagination. Until the night of the Blood Moon Festival. The town square is alive with laughter and music, bonfires casting flickering light across the cobblestone streets. But Persephone doesn’t feel the warmth of the celebration. A strange pull tightens in her chest, a whisper at the back of her mind urging her to leave. She follows it. Sneaking away from the festival, she moves toward the forbidden forest at the edge of town. The moment she steps past the first tree, the air shifts. The world is different here—sharper, electric, alive. She ventures deeper, her heart pounding. The scent of damp earth and pine fills her lungs. The wind sighs through the branches, carrying with it something that makes her skin prickle. Then she hears it. A low, menacing growl. The underbrush rustles violently. Glowing eyes pierce through the darkness. A pack of rogue wolves emerges, their bodies tense with hunger, their snarling teeth gleaming under the moonlight. Panic surges through Persephone’s veins. She stumbles back, breath hitching—too many, too close. The largest wolf steps forward, lips peeling back in a deadly snarl. Her pulse pounds. She’s going to die. Then—a blur of black fur and golden eyes. A massive wolf erupts from the shadows, slamming into the nearest rogue with bone-crushing force. Snarls and yelps split the night as he tears through them, moving with terrifying precision and power. Persephone watches, frozen, heart racing as he destroys them all. Silence falls. The black wolf stands among the fallen bodies, his massive form heaving with deep breaths. Then, slowly, he turns toward her. His eyes—molten gold, burning, familiar. Something inside her stirs. A feeling she doesn’t understand. He steps forward. And then, before her disbelieving eyes—he shifts. Where the wolf once stood, a man now towers over her. Tall. Commanding. Muscles carved from shadow and moonlight. Midnight-black hair falls over his forehead, framing a face that is both cruel and breathtaking. And his eyes… they pin her in place, as if she belongs to him. His voice is low, rough—possessive. “You shouldn’t be here, little one.” Her breath catches. The air between them crackles with something dangerous, electric, unbreakable. Then, before she can react—he takes her.
