It took a minute but we were able to find a wolven library. I could smell some rogues and some members from other packs around which did make me nervous. But seeing Charlie look confident gave me confidence to hold my head up.
“Where do we start?” She asked me. I shrugged and walked over to a single computer. Libraries have a collection of all their books. I just needed keywords. That or I would have to ask the librarian which could lead to alerting our former packs. I sat down just typed in “Wolves” Which was too general with over 100 results. Everything starting from children's books on what type of wolves there are to a corny looking werewolf mate story. But the only thing that caught my eye was a book called “Wolven Hierarchy: How packs function without an alpha” But looking at the synopsis seemed to allude to actual wolves and how they don’t have a typical “Alpha'' but lead as a pack.
“Lets start here” I said looking at Charlie over my shoulder. At one point she had started rubbing my shoulders and even braided my hair. After searching for a few minutes for the book and coming up with nothing I went to the main table in the center and asked.
“Hi, I’m sorry to bother, I’m looking for “Wolven Hierarchy: How packs function without an alpha.” I spoke softly to the older lady in front of me. She was clearly human. Not only was her smell distinct, but her hair was an ashy gray and wolves are known to only gray around the 60 human year mark. Werewolves grow and age the same, but for some reason humans just get the old look first.
“Oh of course dear. It should be down E aisle.” She told me, pointing me to an aisle we had checked.
“Oh I’m sorry we must have missed it.” Charlie said, stepping away, but I grabbed her waist before she could step too far.
“By chance can you see if it got checked out?” I asked softly. “Its possible we missed it, but just in case.” I asked.
“Sure dear.” She smiled. She clicked a few times, did some typing and a few seconds later said “It looks like it was checked out. Are you sure this is the book you're looking for?” She asked?
“Truefully no, we're not sure what we’re looking for. It just seems like a step in the right direction.” She gave us a look over.
“We do not have a book related to the type of wolves I think you're looking for” She said, giving us a sly look. I felt Charlie stiffen in my grip and I could feel my face drain.
“How do you know what we’re looking for?” I asked tensely.
“You are safe here. I’ve been around a LONG time.” She said, emphasizing the word long. She gently moved her salmon colored cardigan which revealed a tattoo that sat at the base of her neck and shoulder. I could faintly see 4 healed holes in the markings. It looked like it was a mate mark that was then turned into a human tattoo. “He died a long time ago.” She said softly. It was rare to see a human mated with a wolf. Not unheard of such as gay mates, but uncommon.
“I’m sorry.” Both Charlie and I at the same time.
“I know a fated couple when I see them.” She said, giving us the same sly look as before.
“Have you seen-” Charlie started asking
“I have. Few and far between, but I have.”
“Is it okay if we ask some questions?” I asked. She looked up as we heard some steps behind us.
“Is that all Peter?” She asked a college age looking boy. A werewolf. He gave us a disgusting glance, causing me to step in front of Charlie protectively. He scoffed while handing the lady a paper, gave us one last glance and walked away.
“Come on back dears.” She said, catching our attention again. We followed her to a back area where there was a 6 shelf tall, about 3 foot wide shelf full of books. Most of them are clearly old.
“This is all we have. I hope you find what your looking for.” She said about to turn away.
“Wait. Why are you helping us?”
“Because my mate got cast out for having a human mate.” She sighed. “And I can feel the alpha in the both of you.”
“What?” We both asked confused.
“My father is an alpha.” I said. “But what does that have to do with anything?” I asked.
“You two will do great things. I can feel it.” She said with that sly look. She then quickly walked away. I sat down on the brown loveseat in the corner of the room.
“Are you of alpha blood?” I asked Charlie.
“I-I don’t know. I used to think my father was an alpha, but growing up he wasn’t. People showed him more respect than he deserved. And he was treated like an equal by the alpha.” She told me sitting beside me.
“What do you think she meant?” I asked. Charlie shook her head softly.
“I’m still trying to process how she knew about us.”
“Yeah.” I laughed, agreeing. Looking through the spines of the books there was only a handful with titles, but none of them stood out. So I grabbed one with nothing on the spine. Opening it up it to the front page it said “Belongs to:” and in cursive “Elizabeth Brainard”
“Its a diary.” I said setting it down on the little table besides the loveseat. I grabbed another one with no title on the spine “Belongs to: Erik Sweeney” “Looks like a lot of them are diaries.” I mentioned. Looking through the pages. Charlie grabbed the one I set down and quickly flipped to the last page.
“This person also had a gay mate.” She gasped. I flipped to the back of mine.
“Its with great joy that I can finally announce myself as the Alpha of the pack. My members are safe.”
There was a post it note stuck the the next page.
Its thought that Erik was killed a few years later by another Alpha.
“He was killed by another alpha a few years after he became one.” I told Charlie. “If I had to guess its because he wanted freedom from controlling packs.”
“Elizabeth was killed along with her mate by a homophobic alpha.” They too wanted to lead a ‘Safe Haven’ for other wolves.”
‘Wanna give us any help here?’ I asked Ismene.
‘Unfortunately I know as much as you do. I only get snippets of my past lives.’
“Helpful.” I replied sarcastically out loud. Charlie gave me a side eyes, but I just pointed to my head and shook it. We both sat reading through the last few pages of every diary we could. Each one had a sticky note of how/when they died or a couple had notes pointing to another diary not here.
“I’m sorry dears, but I have to ask you to leave now.” Said the older lady from before who had stuck her head into the little room we’re in. Both Charlie and I were laying on the couch with our feet in each others laps.
“Is it possible for us to check these out?” I asked.
“I’m sorry, but no. I’m not able to make copies of these due to them being more private in nature.” She mentioned. “But you are welcomed back any day.” She smiled.
“Okay, well thank you so, so, so much.” I smiled.
“Any time dears.” I grabbed a hold of Charlies hand as we walked out which caused tingers to shoot up my arm. The pleasure I felt by touching her was so intense I felt like I could live off of it alone.

After we left the library I took us to a small diner down the street.
“What are we doing?” She asked.
“Do you wanna go on a date with me?” I asked a blush creeping onto my face. Her face instantly turned red, but she nodded. I quickly got out of the car and ran to the other side to open the door for her. She blushed again as she grabbed my outstretched hand. Holding it we walk into the restaurant together.
“Hi, welcome! Just 2 today?” The host asked as we walked in.
“Yes please.” I smiled politely.
“Booth or table?” I looked at Charlie who was looking at me wide eyed.
“Could we get a booth in a corner?”
“Yeah of course!” She smiled and led us to a far corner. I made sure to sit with my back to the wall and so that I could see the door.
“I don’t have money.” Charlie whispered shyly.
“I never asked if you did.” I told her kindly.
“I don’t want you to spend all you have on me.”
“And I won't, okay? I just wanna spoil you a little. You're my mate, you deserve it.”
“Hi, I’m Amanda, I’ll be your waitress today, what can I get started for you?” A girl said holding a notepad and pen.
“Water please.” Charlie said lightly looking at the menu she had slid between us.
“I’ll have a lemonade.” I smiled at her politely.
“Sure thing sweety, I’ll be right back with your drinks.” She said smiling at Charlie and walked away. A growl escaped me quietly when she was far enough away.
“Rae?” She questioned. I snapped from looking at where the waitress was and looked at my goddess of a mate. “You okay?” She asked.
“She was flirting with you.” I grumbled.
“No she wasn’t you horny human.” Ismene butted in.
“She was being polite,” Charlie laughed. Her laugh sounded like music to my ears. I reached over and grabbed her hand which sent sparks down my arm. It took everything in me to not moan.
“I’m sorry.” I said bowing my head slightly to her. She smiled lightly at me and looked at the menu. “I hope I didn’t upset you.” I said a bit disappointed in myself for letting my jealousy get the best of me.
“No” She said quickly. “I’m just unsure how to respond.” She said honestly. “I really haven’t been in a relationship at all and this is new to me.”
“I would run to the ends of the world for you.” I said after a few minutes of silence. I never imagined my mate being-” I trailed off a bit. “But I can’t imagine anyone else now.” I told her. She grabbed my hand again, discarding her menu on the table. The sparks shot up my arm leaving tingers. I wanted nothing more than to be close to her.
"So tell me about yourself." I smiled. She smiled at me and said.
"Well I'm originally from “Tuttles'' she said rubbing her arm. "I was the Gammas daughter, but after it was know I was gay my father was kicked from his position and in return I was kicked out." She said kinda quickly. I rubbed the top of her hand to bring some comfort to her.
As I was about to speak, the waitress came back. "Are you ladies ready to order? She asked. I nodded and looked at Charlie who was nodding as well.
"I will take the hamburger with everything on it, but could I add bacon if possible?" I asked.
"So the bacon cheeseburger?" She asked. Looking down I saw there was a bacon cheeseburger burger but it didn't have everything on it.
"I want everything on it, that's why I'm asking to add bacon." She glanced at the menu on the table.
"Oh I see, okay. And you?" She said looking to my goddess of a mate.
"I'll take the regular BLT." She smiled.
"Awesome, I'll be right out with that. Let me know if you need anything else." She smiled at both of us before leaving.
A/N I’m hitting majors writers block already. I know where I want it to go, but I just don’t know if I can get it there. Let me know if you have ideas!
