The doctor says only surgery could save Violet, Amber's mother, and it could cost more than one million dollars.
Amber said, "One million dollars?"
The doctor said, "You don't have much time. Arrange the amount by tomorrow morning."
"Once you arrange the full amount, I will organize the surgery."
He said this and left from there.
Amber listened and was devastated.
She leaned on the wall and slowly slumped down to the floor.
At once, she started crying out loudly.

Lilly took Amber to her father's office.

Just then, someone came and opened the door of the office to go inside, and Amber heard Lilly's father shouting.
"Lilly, are you mad? Am I running a charity here? I am running a business."
"Did you think one million dollars is a small amount? Take your ..."
The door closed.
Amber heard those words and she knew what is happening.
She understood Lilly's father is not ready to give her the money.
After a few minutes, Lilly came out from the office.
She looked at Amber helplessly.
At least for a few minutes, she has raised hope in Amber.
Now, she did not know how to say that her father refused to help.
For anyone, it is very difficult to say "not possible" when they are in desperate need. It is even more difficult when the person is your best friend and you are their only hope.
But Amber made her situation easy.
She said, "Lilly, it's okay. I understand. You tried. That is more than enough for me."
Lilly understood that Amber overheard their conversation.
She said, "I am so sorry, Amber. I did not expect father to not help you."
