Don't Kill The Messenger

Jake POV I was sitting on Alpha's chair going through some of his documents. Trying my d***st to figure out all these maps and coronations. In my head, it was unorganized and had no rhyme or reason for certain documents to be placed where they were. I had the remaining warriors on extra patrol tonight just in case something happened and especially if Alpha Rogue decided to attack, while the pack had an inexperienced leader, leading them. Me! I will try to insure my pack is safe. I will not disappoint my Alpha or my father. Suddenly, the phone started ringing and scared the s****s out of me. Making the papers fly everywhere. Swearing and cursing like a dirty sailor, trying to find where the phone was now buried. Finally finding it, I picked up the receiver. "Northwestern Paw Pack Jake Cooper speaking." "Hello, Jake. This is Elder Steve. I was wondering if the Alpha was back yet and if I could speak to him please?" "No, he isn't back yet, Elder. I still think he's out in field at Bridgewood, sir." "Oh, okay. How's the pack doing, young man?" I pinched the bridge of my noose, "So far so good." I hated kissing a** to this guy. The Elders were really being a pain in the a** and were steering away from current and more productive ways of handling wolf packs. They evaded not helping in the mage war when openly supporting the elder twin. They also ignored all signs of the Alpha Rogue. They simply would rather sweep the wars under the rug and force marriages to Alpha's and Luna's then worry about something else. I knew other race wars would not prevent our packs from protecting ourselves if war intervened with our packs' way of life. "We are fine right now. Nothing important has happened here and I have doubled the guards," I said. "Good, Good. Listen, I'm sending information about the potential Luna's for the Alpha to choose from." I frowned at the receiver, "Why?" "I'm sorry young gun, but the Alpha needs to pick one if he can't find his mate. Your pack needs a strong Luna. It's been many years now for him to search and there either needs to be a successor named or one produced." I groaned "How do you know that these Luna's would be great? Maybe these Luna's are servant beaters, child haters, or completely useless?" The elder chuckled deeply, "No young gun. We did some digging and tried to match the Alpha with great potential. No issues came up." I rolled my eyes and snorted, noticing my brother Joe leaning on the door frame with the biggest smirk on his face. I put my finger to my lips to make sure he was quiet. Then pointing at the chair opposite of me, for him to sit. "Anyway, young gun, if you hear any news contact me. I should be on your Alpha's list of files." "Very well, sir. I will do that." I answered, ready to get off the phone and end this conversation with him. Goddess, only knows how the Alpha is going to take this new? Lucky me! I thought this delivery boy (me) was so dead. "Good bye young gun, take care, until next time" Elder Steve chimed. "Have a very nice day, sir." I gritted out. Hanging the phone on the receiver. I sighed deeply. Joe had the nerve to laugh. Glaring at my brother and watching him hold his side like an i***t. "Are you done now?" I asked. "What's wrong, Almighty, is it too much for you? It's only the first day?" he laughed. "That was a important conversation you m***n!" I yelled, "D**n them Elder's anyway." Joe took a serious look at me, "Elders? What did they want?" I snorted at him, "What the h**l, do you think? To force Alpha into choosing a mate because he hasn't found one yet." "They can do that?" Joe looked disturbed by this news. "Yes." My whole body was now shaking from my all-ready shot nerves. Beep. Beep.. I looked over and the fax started running. "Goddess that was quick." I barked. Joe looked at the fax machine. "Their serious about this?" I nodded, "Yep", I added with a loud pop. Joe rolled his eyes, still staring at the fax machine. Both of them continued to sit and glare at in silence for another 10 minutes until the phone rang yet again. "Goddess, so help me if that's the Elder again." I cursed the phone. Joe rolled his eyes and smirked at me, "Better answer it Substitute." Flicking Joe off first, I reached down to pick up the receiver. "Northwestern Paw Pack, this is Jack Cooper speaking." I hope that comes off happy said my brain! "Jake! Goddess I've miss you!" the most sweet voice filled my ears and my whole body relaxed, even Brick my wolf was doing flips and happy little barks. "Jade! Are you safe, my Goddess! It's so good to hear your voice and I've missed you so much too, baby!" "I'm good, but this situation here isn't good at all." I put her on speaker so Joe could hear. Jade filled in on everything that went down and updated me on what the Alpha had asked of me. I replied to her putting input here and there. Even Joe asked some questions. With a huff, he flopped his head back on the chair's head rest. "This is weird!" Joe stated, "So not the Alpha Rogue but magic." I rubbed my chin in thought, asking, "Just curious, do we have any history of working with magic people before? Maybe Alex has contact information?" "I don't think so, I'll have to ask?" Jade replied. "Okay, I'll go through all his numbers in his context box and see if I find something." "Oh!" Jade screamed. "Jade? Jade, what is going on?" I yelled. "Alpha just found his mate, she's dead." "Dead?" Joe barked, getting up so fast and knocking a chair over. "Sit down, Joe." I said, pushing him back down to another chair. "Jade? How did our Luna die?" I asked. I could feel my heart pounding out of my chest in anticipation. I waited for Jade to reply, knowing she was crying and trying to answer my question. I wouldn't howl, I thought, it's not my place to tell the pack. We'll wait for our Alpha to share if he wants too. Why tell them if he doesn't wish to? We'll help him figure it out. I'm so glad I found Jade. I couldn't imagine waiting as long as my Alpha has. I turned 18, I went to college and there she was offered so quickly and so easy for me. Still, someone who's like a second father to me has suffered so, so much. "We think the magic users that left towards the west are responsible." Jade choked "We need to find these people." Joe barked, "Defend our Alpha." "It's not that easy Joe, the Alpha's mate was a mage." Joe and I looked at each other, sad, frustrated, and confused, and stared back at mine. I shook my head. "She was part of the mage war then, and happens to be our Alpha's mate? Jade, I need to inform you about a call I had before you did. It was the Elders on the phone and the fax they sent had just finished printing out, all qualifying Luna options for our Alpha." "Oh my GOD!" she gasped, "After tonight's events! That's not good, not good at all. It'll set him off." "I know, so please Jade, at some point please warn our Alpha before he gets home." "Right too much to break here." Joe added with a smirk, and I glared at him. "Serious Joe?" "I will try to inform them, your father and the Alpha are leaving the area now. What I can gathered it's about his mate having a baby. She's apparently important in ending the mage war." "WHAT!" Joe and I said together, stunned. "Look, I gotta go. You guys keep our boarders safe tonight. Keep an eye out for John." "I love you and please come home to me safely, do you hear?" "Yeah yeah!" Jade said. Joe laughed, Jade continued, "Don't you worry big boy, I'll be coming home before you know it. We can spoon soon, I promise." " OK!" I yipped and Joe ended up making gagging noise. Slapping my brother in the back of the head to make him stop with a "Ouch." "Love you Jade, return to me soon!" "Love you too, honey! Stay safe yourself, okay, oh and Joe?" Rubbing the back of his head, "Yeah?" "Behave yourself and when I get back I would love to hear how your date went." Jade laughed. Joe's eyes bugged out and he jumped out, "I..I..I have to go patrol now." "Oh..My...Goddess...JOE! When!" I said dramatically, containing my laughter as he ran out the door. Jade had all ready hung up the phone, straight out myself from chuckling at my brothers expense. I looked back at Alpha's desk with a groan, realizing I still had to get all these papers back together again. Ruining my moment. Slamming my butt on the chair and messaging my temples to get rid of the brewing headache that was just starting. The silence was golden and after a few breaths, I started physically manhandling the papers back, straightening out everything. When I got out of the chair I was yet again interrupted! "Jake!" yelled through my pack link. "Zack?" I asked back, "What is it?" "We have humans coming this way, Jake. It looks like an army but there's women, elderly, children, and babies, sir." "Wait, I bet that's the Bridgewood people, Zack." I said back "I'll be there in 5 minutes. You're located at the northern boarder, right?" "Yes, Jake, how did you know?" "Nevermind greet them and let them come in, I'll link to my mother and get some guest rooms available. After that, I'll shift and run to you in my wolf form so I'm faster." I stated. "Okay, Jake. Hurry up. I'll send some messages out for some help carrying their stuff and helping the wounded." "Good." I closed the link and opened one to my mother, "MOM!" "By the Goddess Jack, are we being under attack?" "No, I need you and the Omega's to get some of the guest rooms set up with maybe 500 hundred or more humans coming in. I believe there from Bridgewood. I'm going out to meet them just to make sure. I also need the doctor and her staff on standby just incase someone is injured." I said to her. "OH okay I can do that. Be safe son." my mom called out. "Always" I replied and closed the link. I quickly removed my close open the Alpha's windows and jumped. In mid air, I shifted to Brick. Brick is all brown like bark and has my blue eyes. Brick is almost as big as the Alpha's Wolf Chase and we're just as fast. We swiftly took off to the northern border. As soon as I was there, I found a tree that I knew contained bags of clothes. Putting on a hoodie and sweat pants. Walking around the tree, I saw Zack Conth, Sam's boy. Zack and I went to school together, grew up together. He stood at the edge of the border walking with intense blue eyes. He hasn't moved since I arrived and now I'm standing right side by side with him. "They will be here in a moment." he said as he looked at me, then he poked me in the arm. "How's the first day, Almighty Substitute?" "Christ!" I said, looking seriously at Zack, "Stop copying my brother, would you?" Zack chuckled, "That bad, uh?" I sighed, "Yes, and when the Alpha comes back, I'm dead." Zack's eyebrow lifted, "Dead? Why?" I smiled at him, "Because that will happen when I deliver all the messages that were left for him." Zack laughed, "Do you want me to link him and say "Please Alpha Don't Kill the Massager!" I rolled my eyes, making him laugh louder, " Absolutely not!" Tree branches snapped and you could hear the smashing of leaves as people walked. Zack and I both looked and in a few seconds people started to emerge from the woods. One of the men leading the way held up a hand and walked closer to us. In a deep, rich voice he asked, "Is this the Northwestern Paw Pack?" I nodded and added, "Are you Johnathan McKennith?" The man nodded. I looked up and down at the human man . I put him around 5'7 and around the Alpha's age. Almost shaved like an army cut brown hair, he had green eyes and was pretty muscly for a human. But with all that muscle, I bet I was strong because I was a werewolf, but this man looked knowledgeable. "I'm here to see your Alpha and ask permission to stay in your pack. I also bring news that needs reporting containing the up mosts important information." he added with a sad manor. "Yes, I'm well aware of your circumstances, you may pass but Johnathan. The Alpha is still at Bridgewood." John closed his eyes then looked at me. "So he knows?" "Yes, but not all of the pack knows. You and I will chat since Alex left me in charge. The rest of the pack will lead you to guest rooms and give you everything your people need." I said, "Come with me and this is Zack. He'll help." John looked back at his people, nodded and then walked to me. We shook hands and I then led them towards the pack area."
