I never thought this would actually happen, but here I am—sitting in a tiny, cozy cottage in St. Ives, Cornwall, wrapped in the softest knit blanket, with a steaming cup of tea warming my hands. Outside, snowflakes drift lazily from the sky, covering the cobblestone streets like powdered sugar on a pastry. It’s quiet, so eerily peaceful that it almost doesn’t feel real. For the first time in what feels like forever, I can breathe. No deadlines. No 2 AM emails. No suffocating expectations. Just me, in this little house by the sea, with Lana Del Rey playing softly in the background and the scent of cinnamon lingering in the air. If I close my eyes, I can almost believe I’ve stepped into a dream. A month ago, I left Seoul behind. The city that never slowed down, never let me slow down. I was drowning there—just another corporate drone stuck in an endless cycle of work, eat, sleep, repeat. Everyone told me I was lucky. A stable job. A promising career. So I packed up my life, bought a one-way ticket, and came here. St. Ives feels like a painting. Like something straight out of a novel, where time moves at its own pace and no one is rushing to get anywhere. The ocean is just down the road, the scent of salt and fresh bread filling the streets. The locals smile at me like they’ve known me forever. It’s different. It’s terrifying. It’s everything I need. But I still don’t have a job. I can’t live in a romantic daydream forever—my savings won’t last long, and I need to figure something out. No more corporate hellholes, no more soul-crushing meetings. Maybe I’ll work in a coffee shop. Maybe I’ll finally do something with my art. Maybe I’ll fail completely and end up running back home. Before I can spiral too much, my phone buzzes on the coffee table. I already know who it is before I look. Umma I hesitate for a second before answering. “Ji-Ah,” my mom’s voice is sharp, but underneath it, I can hear the familiar warmth, the worry. “You didn’t call today.” I sigh, tucking my knees to my chest. “I was going to, I just—time got away from me.” “Mm-hmm.” She doesn’t sound convinced. “Are you eating well? Sleeping?” “Yes, Umma.” “Are you looking for a job?” I knew this was coming. “I’m figuring it out.” There’s a pause, the kind that makes my stomach tighten. “Ji-Ah, I know you wanted a break. But you can’t just run away forever.” “I’m not running away,” I say, even though maybe, a little bit, I am. “I just needed something different. I needed to breathe.” She exhales, the sound soft but heavy. “I worry about you.” “I know,” I whisper. “But I promise, I’m okay.” Another pause. Then, finally, her voice softens. “Just don’t forget, you always have a home here.” I blink away the sudden sting in my eyes. “I won’t.” After we say goodbye, I set my phone down and stare at the snow outside. My chest feels a little tighter now, but I shake it off. I made this choice. I wanted this. And despite everything, sitting here with my tea and my favorite movie queued up on my laptop, I know one thing for sure: I don’t regret it. This is my fresh start. And whatever comes next, I’ll figure it out.
