Max pov
“Alpha,” my beta, Chase, called as he walked into my office. He was my best friend and beta. We grew up together, and he was the only person allowed to stroll into my office without knocking.
“Yes, Chase,” I said, still looking down at the files on my desk.
“We have a situation.”
I looked up at him, waiting for him to continue.
“We saw a girl at the edge of our border,” he continued. “She was bruised and unconscious, and she didn’t have the scent of any pack.”
“A rogue?” I asked.
He nodded.
“Where is she?” I asked.
“At the pack hospital,” he replied.
“Okay. I’ll come around later in the evening when she’s awake to question her,” I said.
Chase nodded and walked away.
##############################
LATER THAT EVENING
It had been three hours of me drowning myself in work. Being an Alpha—and a powerful one at that—came with a lot of responsibilities. Me not having my mate yet allowed me to stay busy for as long as I wanted without worrying about anything.
Sometimes, I forgot that I needed to eat or even sleep, and my body endured it simply because I was a werewolf—and an Alpha—which meant I had a very powerful wolf.
My wolf, Rex, and I didn’t talk much. I knew he was lonely because we hadn’t found our mate yet, but there was nothing that could be done. Only the Moon Goddess knew why she hadn’t shown my mate to me yet.
I respected the Moon Goddess, and I knew that anything she did was for a reason.
My pack wasn’t bothered about me not having a mate because of the fear other packs had for me and my pack. I was considered the heartless Alpha simply because I didn’t have a mate yet.
I had heard countless rumours about myself. One time, I even heard that I had killed my mate, and that was why I was mateless.
I had never tried to correct anybody.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
Someone knocked gently on my office door.
“Come in,” I said.
Scarlett strolled in, wearing an extremely short and slutty gown that left nothing to the imagination.
Scarlett was the Omega’s daughter, and we had basically grown up together. Her father and mother had always wanted more. I had heard that her grandfather was once an Alpha, but I never got the full story.
Because I hadn’t found my mate yet, I sometimes got lonely and just needed someone. Everyone did.
Scarlett’s mother didn’t think twice before throwing her daughter at me, and I didn’t think Scarlett minded. She thought I would eventually make her my Luna, but that would never happen.
I still had hope that I would find my mate someday, but for now…
“You’ve been in your office all day,” Scarlett said, sliding her hands from my shoulders down to my chest.
I watched her hands move. I started getting hard. She always knew what to do and what to touch. She was good at this, and I didn’t mind it.
“Why don’t we go to my room, and I’ll ease up some of this tension?” she whispered into my ear, while her hands continued moving lower.
I held her hand, stopping her from proceeding.
“Raise your dress and bend over the table.”
She pulled her hands away and did just that.
I stood up and pulled my trousers down. I grabbed her and inserted myself into her. The room became filled with her moans and the loud sound of me pounding into her.
I held her by the neck as I reached my o****m.
I pulled my trousers back up while she was still bent over the table.
“Get out,” I said as I sat back down on my chair.
She stayed frozen in place, as if she was trying to process what I had just said.
“Are you deaf?” I asked.
She quickly stood up and pulled her dress down. I knew she could already hear the annoyance in my voice.
She turned to look at me.
I could see her eyes starting to water before she turned around and walked out of my office.
I sighed and covered my face with both my hands.
This was not me.
But the pressure my mum and Scarlett’s mum had been putting on me to just settle down with someone was getting to me.
I knew I couldn’t make Scarlett my Luna.
I just couldn’t.
I didn’t love her that way, and everyone knew her family was power-hungry.
I didn’t know why my mum chose to ignore that.
“Max.”
Chase called out.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t see him stroll into my office.
I looked at him and could see the worry on his face.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“I just saw Scarlett leaving here. You know you can’t keep doing this, right?” he said with a serious expression.
“Chase, I’m good. I promise.”
I knew he didn’t believe me. He knew me too well.
“You know you can tell me anything, right? You might be an Alpha now, but you’re still my best friend. You know that, right?” he said, still wearing that same serious expression.
“I know, Chase. But for real, I am good. Everything has just been a lot lately, but I can assure you that I’m good.”
He nodded his head slowly.
“Anyway, the rogue girl is awake now,” he said.
I nodded and began fixing up my table.
“I’ll be right behind you.”
He nodded, turned around, and left my office.
