01:Again, again
Olivia’s POV:
“Congratulations, Luna. You’re pregnant!”
Those words made me freeze. I stared at Dr Emerson, hoping that maybe she was joking and would burst into laughter and eventually tell me the result was negative.
“R-really?” I asked, my voice a whisper. My hand went to my stomach, pressing softly. “I...I’m actually...”
Her face brightened and she nodded. “Yes! Without a doubt!”
I shook my head. “No. Run the tests again. Run I five more times.”
“Of course, Luna.”
This can’t be real. Just last year I had a shock like this too. The tests came back positive but as time went by, nothing showed. At the end of the day, it was a false positive.
If this turns out to be another false positive, I will lose my mind.
I watched Dr Emerson draw blood samples and leave to run the tests. I waited, my heart beating so hard I almost had a heart attack.
It's been two years, today making it three, since I got mated to the alpha of Creek pack — James Anderson.
Three years of marriage with nothing to show for it. I came to this pack as an orphan omega on the verge of turning rouge. Yet James and his pack accepted me. I became his Luna, and I’ve done everything in my power to be the best Luna.
Everything except bear an heir.
I chewed on my inner cheek, apprehension brewing in my gut like a distant storm.
‘Please...let it be real,’ I pleaded silently to the moon goddess, if she would hear my prayer.
I need this pregnancy. That’s the only thing that can save me...my marriage, now. James is a good man, but I can tell he’s getting tired of waiting.
And there's been rumours of his first love returning to the city...if that's true then I need this baby more than anything.
I love him with all my heart, and I want to see him happy.
“Luna, I’ve ran the tests a total of ten times now. I’m positive, you are pregnant.” Dr Emerson returned and announced. “Shall I inform the alpha?”
I shook my head. “No, no. it’s...it’s fine. I want to tell him myself.”
She nodded. “Congratulations once again, Luna. May your babies grow in good health.”
“Babies?” I asked, eyes wide.
Her smile widened. “It may be too early to tell, but you’re having multiple babies.”
Tears rushed to my eyes. That’s perfect, more than perfect. Its almost like the moon goddess is compensating me for the years of barrenness.
Wiping my eyes, I got to my feet and thanked her.
I walked out of the hospital, a dazed smile on my lips. Happiness filled my heart. I touched my stomach, the corners of my lips trembling. “My babies, I can’t wait to meet you.”
***
I stared at the clock. Ten minutes to midnight. My eyes moved across the dining table, taking in the table covered in countless delicious dishes. Dishes that had long gone cold.
I checked the time again, picked up my phone and tried to call James, only to see that I had already left twenty five missed calls.
A heavy sigh left my lips and I sank further into my chair.
I wanted our third anniversary to be special. Not just because of the babies, but because we deserved to have a time to ourselves.
Maybe after dinner, we'd take the celebration up to the bedroom. It's been almost a month since James and I last shared a bed...and I've missed him.
My body has missed him.
Where could he be at this hour?!
My phone rang, shattering my thoughts. I picked it up, surprised to see Sandra, my best friend, calling. “Yes?”
“I sent you a picture!” she shouted, her voice laced with panic. “Check it now, please!”
Wondering what could have rattled her so much, I checked the photo.
My blood turned to ice.
In the picture was a man and woman. The woman had her back turned to the camera, but the man’s face i could see clearly.
I wouldn't miss his sandy hair and baby blue eyes anywhere. Not the birthmark on his cheek either.
They were walking into a hotel.
Another picture came in, one where I could see the woman's face. Delicate features, long blond hair, blue eyes....Celine Winters.
The rumours were true.
My hands shook and my knees buckled. I quickly reached for the closest chair.
“Olivia,” Sandra called through the speakers. “Liv?! Talk to me!”
I couldn't form any words. The phone slipped out of my hand and fell to the ground. The screen cracked, and Sandra’s voice grew distant till it faded.
James and Celine...in a hotel?
That has to be a mistake? Right? Especially not today. He wouldn't forget today. There’s no way he’d—
I dove for my phone and snatched it up. The screen was cracked, but it still worked. I dialed James, and waited, all the breath trapped in my throat, for him to pick up.
The call rang through. No response.
I called again.
And again.
Till the automated voice said his line was switched off.
My eyes filled with tears, and before i knew it, I started to sob on the floor.
This can’t be happening. Not today. Not after we finally have an heir...heirs.
****
I didn't know I had fallen asleep till I felt a sharp nudge in my side.
“Olivia. What are you doing on the floor?”
The ache of laying on the floor registered as I tired to get to my feet. The dining room was dark, and as I looked around, it all started coming back to me.
“Have you lost it? If you want to sleep, can't you find your bedroom?”
I turned to see James.
He looked like he had just returned from work, his tie undone, and his hair rough. His eyes lacked warmth as they scanned me from top to bottom. Then he looked around, grimacing at the sight of the table.
“What is all this?” he asked.
My heart squeezed in on itself. The photo flashed through my mind. He was with Celine... Should I ask about it?
“Did you forget?” I asked instead. “Today...today is our anniversary,”
His eyes clapped back on me. Uninterested. “Was it today?”
I bit down on my lip. “Yes and...I made all your favourites and waited for you and —”
“I had work,” he snapped, silencing me. “It’s not easy being an alpha, Olivia. Not that you could relate to it.”
His words felt like a cold dagger straight to my heart. My mouth opened and closed, but I couldn't get any words out.
*I do a lot of work as a Luna too!* I almost yelled.
He looked at me, then he turned and started heading to the bathroom.
“James!”
He paused, turning slowly to face me.
I stepped closer to him, forcing myself to smile despite how my heart was shattering. “I-I’m pregnant.”
Silence blanketed us.
James stared at me, his eyes blank and his face expressionless. “What did you say?”
I paused. He didn't sound happy like I expected.
“I said I’m pregnant.” I said again, my voice sounding firmer. “This is...amazing. We’ve waited so long and the doctor said they could be more than one and I just can’t wait for us to—”
He crossed the space between us and grabbed my wrist. His eyes darkened with rage, and he snarled. His alpha aura flared. “You’re pregnant?!” he roared his voice making me flinch. “Who the f**k is the father?!”
“W-what do you mean? You're the father. Who else would—”
He scoffed. “I’m the father?! I haven't f*****g touched you in months!”
Fear seeped into my heart, and my throat felt clogged up. “James...that... I know it's been long but we slept together last month...”
The next thing I knew, the doors burst open and thunderous footsteps filled the air. Guards surrounded me, and it took me two seconds to realize he had mind-linked the guards.
“You f*****g liar.” James hissed, pushing me back. The guards caught me. “Take her to the doctor. Now.”
“James!” I screamed out, struggling against the guards and their metal-like grip. “Please! I didn't do anything!”
My words fell on deaf ears as the guards continued to drag me all the way to the doctor.
Before I knew what was happening, I was being held down on the hospital bed, bound hands and feet while James continued to glower at me.
My chest rose and fell rapidly, tears blurring my vision. “J-James please...”
Dr Emerson rushed into the room in her night clothes, her eyes wide with horror as she saw the sight before her. “Alpha?”
“That thing inside her. Is it mine?” he asked the doctor.
She looked at me and pity filled her eyes. Then she turned to him. “I-I’ll have to do a DNA test. But it’s early and it could hurt her and the baby.”
“Please,” I sobbed, “You’re the father....I swear it on my life. I-it’s only been you, James.”
My words fell on deaf ears. His eyes remained cold, brimming with fury. “How long will the test take?”
“Probably in three months time.”
James shook his head. “Cut it out.”
My heart stopped beating. That was a mistake.
He didn't say that.
He wouldn’t—
“Alpha?” Dr Emerson asked.
“Are you deaf? I said, cut that thing in her womb out.”
