CHAPTER FOUR: SHADOWS BETWEEN US

1153 Words
Here's Chapter Three of Moonlit Secrets titled Shadows Between Us! The moonlight spilled like silver wine through the canopy, washing the forest in a haunted glow. Crickets quieted. The wind held its breath. Ronan’s heart hammered in his chest; his wolf barely contained beneath his skin. She was there. He felt her before he saw her—Elena. Her scent rode the air like an old song, soaked in jasmine and regret. When she finally stepped into the clearing, Ronan stood frozen, years of fury and longing warring in his eyes. “Elena,” he whispered. She didn't say a word at first. Just looked at him with eyes that held a thousand unsaid things. Her body was wrapped in a long jacket, hair pulled back hastily, as if she hadn’t meant to come but couldn’t stop herself. He took a tentative step forward. “You came back…” She nodded. “I shouldn’t have. "But—” her voice cracked. “I needed to see you.” Ronan studied her; his expression unreadable. “Why?” Elena looked away. Her hand unconsciously brushed her lower stomach. “It’s complicated.” Ronan’s jaw clenched. “Everything with you always is.” The bitterness in his tone stung. She deserved it. “I'm sorry,” she said softly. But I couldn't stay then. My dad was getting worse, Eli still needed me, and… things were spiraling.” “You ran,” Ronan growled. “You broke the bond.” “I didn’t know what else to do.” He stepped closer. “Did you think I’d hurt you?” “No.” Her voice was barely a whisper now. “I was afraid I’d lose myself in you.” They stood in silence. Just them and the wind. Ronan reached forward, gently brushing a curl behind her ear. “You look tired.” She nodded. “I haven’t been sleeping well.” He hesitated. “Are you… alright?” Elena blinked away the threat of tears. Her hand hovered again near her belly. For a second, she almost told him. About the baby. About the flutters. The silver-eyed visions. The silent, growing connection. But something stopped her. The fear of what it would do to him if he knew. The fear of him claiming what he lost… and losing it all again. So instead, she lied. “I’m just tired,” she murmured. Ronan’s wolf howled in his mind. *She’s lying. * But he didn’t push. He’d learned to recognize the walls she built. And then, from the shadows, a slow clap echoed. Ysara. The wolf-witch stepped into the clearing; her violet eyes aglow. “Beautiful reunion,” she said with a smirk. “Yet soaked in secrets.” Ronan frowned. “Why are you here again?” Ysara tilted her head. “Because the moon shifts, and the thread tightens.” Elena narrowed her eyes. “The thread?” The witch stepped between them. “The bond may be frayed, but it isn’t broken. Not when it left… a tether.” Ronan looked sharply at Elena, who quickly looked away. Ysara smiled. “Ah. She knows.” Elena’s voice shook. “What are you talking about?” The witch ignored the question. She began circling them slowly, her cloak dragging over the damp earth. > “One born in the hush of moonless night, > Will cradle both ruin and rise. > Blood of wolf and will of flame, > Shall tip the world or tame the skies.” Ronan exhaled sharply. “More riddles.” “Truth hidden in rhyme,” Ysara said. “The child will not wait for you to choose. He will choose his own fate… and yours.” Elena’s heart pounded. “How do you know there’s a child?” Ysara’s smile thinned. “Because the forest dreams of him. I see his eyes when I sleep. Glowing silver. Not of this world. He speaks in silence. And his name is still unwritten.” Ronan looked at Elena again. “What child?” Elena swallowed hard. “I don’t know what she’s talking about.” Another lie. Another knife to her soul. Ysara laughed quietly. “You think you can protect him by hiding? Foolish girl.” “I have to go,” Elena whispered, turning toward the trail. Ronan grabbed her wrist. “You can’t just leave. Not again.” She looked back; eyes glassy. “My father… he’s worse. Eli has nightmares now. He thinks something’s coming. I don’t have a choice.” “Don’t I deserve the truth?” Ronan asked, his voice raw. She pulled her hand away. “Not if it destroys you.” Ronan stepped back like she'd slapped him. Ysara said nothing, only raised her hand to the sky. “Moonrise brings consequences.” And just like that, Elena was gone—vanishing into the dark like a whisper. --- ### 🌑 **Back in Black Hollow** Elena arrived home just before dawn. Her younger brother, Eli, was already stirring from another nightmare. Her father coughed violently in the back room. She sank to her knees in the living room, pressing her palm to her belly. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. She’d chosen to hide the truth. To carry this alone. Because she couldn’t risk Ronan knowing. Not yet. Not when everything was so uncertain. But the child was restless now. Her body felt strange. Her dreams were darker. And when she looked at her reflection, her eyes sometimes flickered silver. --- ### 🐺 **Meanwhile – In the Heart of the Pack** Ronan returned to his pack’s territory, numb. Calix, his beta, approached. “Any luck?” Ronan shook his head. “She didn’t say anything?” “She said *everything*… and nothing.” Calix frowned. “And the witch?” “She spoke in riddles. Again.” The pack was restless. Tensions were rising. Border patrols were doubling. Rumors spread about rogue wolves gathering in the eastern woods. The elders whispered of omens. And Ronan? He stood in the center of it all—Alpha in name, lost in heart. That night, Elena was jolted awake by Eli screaming in his sleep. She rushed into his room to find the ten-year-old boy levitating slightly above his bed, eyes rolled back, and speaking in a tongue she didn’t understand. When he came to, he looked at her, terrified. “Sis… he’s calling me.” “Who, Eli?” she asked. “The silver-eyed baby. He’s inside your belly. And he’s scared.” “What are you talking about?” she asked, but Elliot dropped to the bed unconscious and Elena rushed out of the room in shock and fear. What just happened?! Why did Elena still keep the secret? What exactly happened to Elliot? Will there be a reunion, unveiling of hidden or even more drama? Find out in chapter 5!
