CHAPTER FIVE: MOONBORN WHISPERS

1301 Words
Next is Chapter Five of Moonlit Secrets titled: Moonborn Whispers. Five years. It felt both like a lifetime and yesterday. Elena managed to raise her and Ronan's seed solo in a new town. She was called Luna. Elena Carter—now known to the world as Elena Moore—had carved out a quiet existence in the mist-wrapped town of Silverbrook, a sleepy northern village just shy of the Canadian border. Nestled between thick woods and cold lakes, it was the kind of place where people didn’t ask questions, which made it the perfect place to hide the daughter of a werewolf. And a prophecy. Each morning began the same: soft light, frost on the windows, a gentle knock on her door from nosy neighbor Mrs. Halbrook, and the sound of Luna’s feet padding down the hallway. But this morning, something was different. Luna didn’t come down. Elena waited a beat too long before calling, “Luna, sweetheart? Breakfast is ready.” No answer. She climbed the stairs, her anxiety growing with each step. She found her daughter’s bedroom window open wide, letting in a sharp breeze. Her bed was a mess of tangled sheets, and her teddy bear lay face down on the floor. Then Elena heard it—a soft growl. Not animal. Not human. She spun toward the closet and flung it open. Luna was crouched inside, shivering, eyes gleaming silver. Her pupils were narrow slits, her fingernails darkened and sharp. Sweat beaded on her small forehead, and her body quivered with unnatural tension. “Luna!” Elena gasped, dropping to her knees. “What’s happening? Sweetheart, look at me!” “I dreamed of teeth,” Luna whispered. And blood. And trees that talk.” Elena gathered her into her arms, smoothing back her sweat-soaked hair. Luna’s heart pounded like a caged animal. Elena didn’t know what to say—only that the prophecy Ysara once spoke of was no longer a threat in the distance. It was happening now. Her daughter wasn’t just a child. She was *becoming* something. Something ancient. Something powerful. And maybe… something dangerous. --- Elena had no one to turn to. No pack. No magic. Just the ghost of a mate she left behind and a brother she hadn’t seen in years. Until that afternoon. The doorbell rang as she was cleaning Luna’s sheets. When she opened the door, her heart almost stopped. “Eli?” she breathed. But it wasn’t quite him. He was taller now—seventeen, thin but sinewy, with wild hair and hollow cheeks. His eyes looked older than they should, and beneath his hoodie, his hands trembled like a man twice his age. “El,” he rasped. “It’s starting.” Elena rushed to pull him inside. “What are you doing here? How did you find me?” “I didn’t, she did.” He turned his gaze to the stairs where Luna now stood, silent and barefoot, eyes once again glowing faintly silver. “She called to me in my sleep,” Eli said, stepping forward like in a trance. She was lost in the woods. Screaming for someone who wasn’t you or me. She said a name.” Elena swallowed hard. “Ronan?” Eli nodded. “Yeah.” Elena ushered them both into the living room and shut every window. “I tried to keep her hidden, Eli. But it’s getting worse.” “She’s moonborn,” he said softly. It’s in her blood. You can’t outrun that.” “I didn’t ask for her to be a prophecy!” Elena snapped, voice cracking. “I just wanted to keep her safe.” “She’s not the only one who’s changing,” Eli added. “I still see things, El. And lately, I’ve been dreaming in tongues again. Visions of fire. Of wolves turning on each other. And always… a man in chains.” Ronan. Elena sat down, burying her face in her hands. “She’s just a child,” she whispered. Eli sat beside her. “No. She’s the future. And something—someone—is hunting her.” --- That night, Elena made Luna sleep in her bed. The child tossed and turned, muttering names in her sleep—some human, some not. And once, she sat bolt upright and growled in a tone that wasn’t her own. “You cannot hide her forever.” Elena watched her in the dim light of the bedside lamp, heartbreaking. The innocent child she once rocked to sleep was changing before her eyes. The baby born under the Hollow Moon was shedding her skin. And what would remain? --- The next morning, Eli stood at the kitchen counter flipping through one of Luna’s drawings. It was a sketch of the forest. But the trees had eyes. And in the center was a man with golden hair, chained to a rock beneath a blood moon. “He’s dreaming too,” Eli said. “He just doesn’t know why.” “You think Ronan’s still connected to her?” Elena asked, pouring coffee with shaky hands. “She’s his blood. His legacy. Of course, he is.” Elena bit her lip. “What if I told him, and he took her away from me?” Eli looked at her sadly. “And what if you don’t—and someone else does?” --- Later that week, things only escalated. At school, Luna bit another child during a game of tag. The teacher called Elena in to discuss “aggressive behavior.” But when Elena arrived, Luna was staring out the window, whispering the names of ancient creatures no one had taught her. At night, she ran fever and woke up howling. Elena took her to a pediatrician in the next town. But blood work came back… strange. Too much white cell regeneration. Anomalous DNA markers. The doctor wanted to refer them to a specialist. They moved again two days later. --- On the outskirts of Silverbrook, in a forgotten chapel overgrown with ivy, a figure knelt before a cracked altar. The figure was cloaked in ash and feathers, speaking into the stone. “The child is stirring. The tether is fraying. We must awaken the Alpha from sleep.” A low growl answered. **The Hunt begins. ** --- On the sixth day of Luna’s changes, Elena awoke to find her daughter gone again. This time, she followed faint prints into the woods. There, in a clearing surrounded by ancient pines, Luna stood barefoot in the snow, staring at the sky. “He’s calling me,” she said. “He wants to find me." He’s scared too.” Elena grabbed her hand, trying not to cry. “We’re going to fix this. I promise.” But Luna turned slowly, her voice deeper than it should be. “You broke the bond. That’s why the danger is closer. I can feel it now.” A gust of wind blew through the trees. Far off, a howl echoed—not like the ones from before. This was familiar. Resonant. Ronan. --- That night, Elena wrote a letter. It was short. Just a few lines. > *Ronan, * > *She exists. She’s yours. I was wrong to hide her. But it was the only way I knew how to protect her. She’s changing, and I can’t do this alone anymore. If you still feel the bond… come find us. Before they do. * > — *Elena* She didn’t know if the letter would ever reach him. But the moon was growing full again. And the child of their bond was about to awaken the world. What will become of Luna now? Will Ronan find them? Will Elena decide to play solo and control Luna? Find out in Chapter six!
