Chapter 3: Running Away

He was my mate.
I stood still in my spot, staring eye to eye with my mate. His intoxicating scent was enough to cloud my mind as I arched my back and my tail up in recognition. His scent was the most delicious scent I’ve ever smelled in my entire life.
More appealing than the aroma of my favorite food.
As I stared longer at my mate, I noticed that he was a pure black wolf, deeply contrasting with my white fur. He was a tall and huge wolf, almost twice the size of mine and he excludes a powerful and domineering aura.
My mate is an alpha. I was certain with that as his deep intense gaze never left my form while standing proud and tall.
But the thought of having an alpha as my mate made me worried and anxious. Alphas meant trouble, especially with my identity as a verrin, there’s a big possibility that he won’t want me as his mate.
Worse, I might be even rejected.
My heart clenched at that possibility. No, I don’t think I’ll be able to handle another rejection. I’m already too broke and pained.
When my mate took a step towards me, I hesitantly took a step backwards. Anxiety was slowly clouding my mind. What if he doesn’t want me? What if he found out that I am a verrin?
Seeing as how I took a step away from him, my mate stopped on his tracks and tilted his head. He seems confused with my reluctance as I lowered my tail. When he took another step, that’s when I got on my paws and quickly turned around, running fast away from him.
I heard my mate let out a growl, probably because I ran away from him on our first encounter. I pushed my paws harder to run faster as I heard him chase me from behind.
Not daring to look back, I run with all the strength I have. Though a knot was forming in my heart as I got further from my mate.
I whimper escaped past my lips but I continued running. If I was only a normal shewolf, I would’ve jump into my mate’s arms willingly. But the circumstances right now is different, and no matter how I badly crave for my his touch, I’m not selfish enough to bring trouble to him, because I was a verrin. An abomination.
My sight was blurry as I continued running back to our pack. For a moment, I hadn’t felt my mate’s presence behind, I probably must’ve outrun him.
But all my thoughts immediately vanished when I was harshly tackled on the ground, a heavy weight on top of me. The sparks that erupted as our fur made contact got my eyes wide open. My mate’s intoxicating scent entered my nose, and I almost let out a purr when tingles shot in my body.
His much larger body was on top of me, pinning me hard to the ground and with his strong strength, I instantly knew that I can’t escape anymore. When I tried struggling for a moment, he deeply growled at me making me whimper.
I admit, seeing my mate getting angry at me makes my heart clench. But the pain I was feeling suddenly turned to satisfaction when he licked my face and purred on top of me.
The effect of the mate bond was sure hard to resist as I can’t help purring from the affection as he licks my face clean.
‘Shift.’
My body froze when a husky, deep voice suddenly whispered in my mind. Realizing that it was him who talked to me by mindlink, my eyes widened.
I was aware that mates can enter each other’s mind, but I never thought that my mate whom I only met a few minutes ago can successfully invade my mind within a short span of time. The mate bond must really be that powerful.
‘Don’t you dare try to escape again, or I’ll punish you.’ My heart skipped a beat when he warned me with a sexy growl.
Damn, I even find his growl sexy. Just great.
‘Answer me, amore.’
My breath hitched upon hearing his dominant voice rang inside my mind. I don’t have an idea how to reply back to him using the mind link, but his intense gaze on me forced me into submission.
‘Okay, I won’t.’ I held my breath, not knowing if it successfully worked. I only tried reaching to our bond through my mind, but when he purred again, I guessed that it did really work.
‘That’s my good girl.’ Butterflies erupted in my stomach as the sparks continued flowing in my body. I kept purring like a proud and satisfied shewolf especially after hearing how my mate took a claim over me.
I am his good girl. I’m his mate!
Perhaps, I should let go of the idea of running away from him. Afterall, we’re mates and the warmth I felt under his body sent comfort to my system. I feel safe in his arms.
Another whimper came out from me when his body left mine. The coldness of the air brushed through my fur sent discomfort and emptiness.
‘Calm down, my love. After I shift, I’m going to cage you in my arms.’
If I was in my human form right now, I probably must’ve been a blushing mess. I slowly stood up on my paws, I can feel my mate’s gaze on me as he stood two feet away. The breaking of his bones flowed out in the silent forest before I finally saw his glorious naked body.
His physique matches his size in his wolf form. He was tall, probably 6’4 in height and he has a strong muscular built. His biceps protruded with muscles and his upper torso was nothing but salivating. His abs were on full display as his bulky chest puffed out when he noticed how I checked his body out. When I looked up to scan his face, my jaw instantly dropped.
He was drop-dead gorgeous. His eyes were a deep shade of crimson, almost black but as the moonlight reflected in his orbs, I noticed how similar it was to blood. His thick eyebrows and long lashes along with his sharp nose and thin, sexy lips. I couldn’t help but take a gulp when I noticed the sexy smirk he held on his lips. His jaw was sharp and sculpted while his thick black messy hair made me want to pull on them as we share a passionate kiss.
Oh f**k! What am I thinking right now? Those nasty things… He was making me imagine things that I shouldn’t suppose to –
My eyes widened when my gaze dropped on his lower area. The ‘thing’ between his legs made me froze in an instant. It was long, thick and veiny – damn! Even when I’m in my wolf form, I can still feel heat rushing up to my cheek.
“Like what you see, my little mate?”
A yelp-like sound escaped past my mouth before I run towards a tree, hiding my body behind it. My heart was pounding fast and I became even more embarrassed when I heard my mate chuckled.
His chuckled sounds even sexier.
I shook my head, trying to get naughty thigs out of my mind before I finally decided to shift back to my human form. I touched my cheek, still feeling the blush covering it.
“Come out now, amore.” My mate’s voice sounded gentler now, but when the chilly breeze hit my bare skin, I became self-conscious.
How would he react when he sees my body? I am not confident with my form, especially I had a long scar running between my thigh. But the part of my body which I was very much ashamed to show to him was on my waist.
K.W. These are the letters Kaden had branded me. And for the second time, I was hesitant to face my mate again.
The brand on my skin… How could I explain this to him? I know my mate would be enraged and be disgusted once he discover that I’ve been branded. And I don’t want to witness that happen in front of my eyes. Hate and disgust towards me, from my own mate.
Before I knew it, my body transformed back into my wolf form before I ran at full speed towards to my pack. I knew he was taken back with my actions. But I can’t afford to see the disappointment in his eyes when he sees my branded skin.
I just can’t.
Pushing myself to run faster, I finally saw the clearing of our pack borders. I can hear my mate running behind me but our gap was already far, and no matter how fast he was, the pack borders is only a few meters ahead.
After one long leap, I was finally able to enter our pack borders… The adrenaline on my body keep surging as I ran back to my cottage.
At a distance, I can hear my mate howl in betrayal eventually making my heart clench.
I’m sorry, mate…
I knew he would hate me for running away. Tears welled up in my own eyes as I wiped them hastily.
Although I wanted to go back into his arms, my own opponent was myself.
And I couldn’t bring myself to go back no matter how much I wanted to.
