Chapter 1: Cake
This is a story mine, a tale of a journey that can't be told to anyone but you. We have a vast sea of unknown stories that stretches from the dawn of time… some prove deadly in most eyes… But hope is lost, we have all a future to hold onto. Oh dear... pardon me, I forgot to introduce who I am. My name is Aurora, I can create all your deepest desires and bring them to life. My other names that have been passed down through legend are The Genie, Goddess of desire and The Queen of fate. This is all between you and me, my secret life that was hidden from the rest. This is my diary of tales that will sound so bizarre that most turn away as fake and fiction. But this is up to you to decide your own opinion of me. But tell me… I'm really curious about you... Do you believe... in wishes? “Tale of an old man who before passing away who will give 3 wishes to the one who finds his stash of gold and silver. His only close friend hid his treasure in an island where pirates dream to uncover…" read the book summary. “Wow… nice, I like that… Why is it always 3 wishes?” I sighed. It’s been an entire 20 years since that incident… birth… what a curse. I closed the thick book with a thud and left it on the bedside table. My reflection stared back its same blank face that was my own. Que, the little dragon that followed me, shock his small body and crawled on the library book and stared at the front page. “Aren't you a bit too old to be borrowing children's novels?” “Yeah, well I can… and I did… you can't stop me. A young mind is a healthy mind.” “… That's not what you said yesterday” “I can… and I just did… Bam, I win” He tilted his small spiky head as I fell face flat onto the fresh white pillow; it's been too long since something interesting had happened, then again… I could always make things happen whenever I wanted too. It's a natural power I have that needed some practice while I was 10 but now that I'm old enough all things that I desire come instantly. It's like a cheat code that is always available whether it is necessary or not. A breeze touched my hair; I lifted my head to see Que attempting to open the window with his tail. Good job lizard, you can do it. “Some fresh air is good for the soul, maybe free you from whatever cage you're living in.” “…It's… a nice breeze… Actually, let's go for a walk, some cake would be amazing!” “With how much cake you eat… it's a wonder how any other customer gets any for themselves too… but yes I agree fresh air is good… hey, you know what would be good? Grapes” Ah… that's right, this little lizard has an unhealthy… but the healthy obsession with grapes and here I thought that dragons were the fierce creatures in stories that destroy everything… “Sure, let me get some money” I reached over to my wallet to get my credit card then checked my phone for my credit card balance imagining a heap of money. $1,000 Oops… uh, I guess it's more than enough? Yeah, time to go eat some cake. “Hey, Que should we go buy that new doggie bed that you liked?” “New Bed! Yes, I love the feeling of being a dog now and then; at least I can roll on my back and sleep that way.” A sound of a bell ringed and instantly from a small flying lizard he morphed into a black dog with tanned markings. His black coat reminded me of my old friend Cube. Cube had been an old companion that had to be given away but now that his new family already accepted him and he seemed to be happy with them, I let them be. There's not a day gone by that I haven't missed that old dog but… his happiness comes first. Que's ears perked up and looked towards me, his dark brown eyes seem to sparkle as his tail wagged and mouth opened to a smile. Man, I miss that dog… “Shall we get going?”Que said in his deep voice. “Yep, let's head out now. I think we'll be back in an hour.” Turning around and a last quick glance of the peaceful tranquillity of the room almost waved a see you soon. The sun's light sparkled all my furniture with his smooth ray and gave a pastel color to the thin curtains strung to the side. The two cups sitting upside down on the bench seemed so peaceful like it had no care in the world but to sit there and relax. I turned to look at Que, his tail wagged as he walked over to pick up his leash. It's been so long since we met, the war between creatures and humans led to this nice world where we can all be friends. But then again no one really knows about Que… or dragons… or anything… hmm… “Let's head off… I can’t put on the leash though…” I laughed “Let me help you also let me quickly go get your little bag too” My cursed lives, the knowledge that shrivels flowers or makes them grow forever. The power of light and dark bow before my ancestors and here I am… walking a dragon in a dog and going for cake. I fitted the leash in my hand comfortably and headed down the stone pathway, the wind sang me the songs of Titania and the plants danced around the tranquil field. Houses lined up next to me, neighbors waving their greetings and their companions rushing over to meet Que. “Such a mundane life, I wonder if they realize there is much more” Que whispered “If they knew, I don't think it would be anything special after a bit. Look at me, I’m just going for cake and hoping that one day it will be interesting without the universe getting destroyed. They don’t even know that each thought they send out brings to them what they need most of what they desire.” “Cold reality, the attraction of both man made and cosmic desires… all in front of them yet they are so blind to see what they are supposed to evolve into. Perhaps it's safer for humans to stay as they are rather than evolve and lose control.”. “Yeah, I can imagine how bad it can be, no peace and quiet if everyone knew” We walked in silence until we heard a clutter of noises mixed between a bit of screeching and loud stomping sounds. “Aurora!!! I've missed you!” Oh jeez… her again. “Hey did I tell you how annoying my boyfriend has been? He told me off again for not reading a lot! I mean I don't read but that's not the point… oh and I need to tell you how much of a jerk he has been lately, it's like the worst thing anyone can do. He told me it was none of my business when I asked him about how his work is going” “Sammy… please, it's too early to be like the-“ She cut me off with a quick wave and ran to her boyfriend who gave a stern look, typical… I knew it would be like that oh well peace and quiet again. Friendships of solid gold… become copper. The strengthened bond we once shared rusted to a thin layer of aluminum; she was no more than background noise just like the rest who have lost my trust. I turned to Que and saw an unimpressed face then kept walking. The morning breeze was a gift from the world to us that most don’t even get to experience even though it happens each time the sun rises. Wooden park benches passed us with couples cuddling together picking petals off flowers. What a beautiful and natural sight, for humans to thrive and continue in their short lives. We hurried to the small bread shop realizing too late that its cash only. Que pointed his nose to the ATM three stores away. New machine… oh well, I needed it anyway. I pressed the silver buttons and withdrew $100 in case it was needed. I shoved the crisp notes into my left pocket and slid the credit card in the right wishing today wouldn’t be another ordinary day that turned heads away. Que who was just as excited as I entered the store and pointed his nose at each piece of bread he wanted. Colourful posters lined the walls, on top of rows of beautifully baked cakes and mouth-watering bread. The shop keeper spoke to the customer in a trench coat and a cowboy hat that covered his face at the counter who had a few pieces of bread with a cup of pudding then hurried out before even taking his change. Puzzled, the owner turns his attention to me who had a large mound of cakes and bread on two trays. “… Would you like another bag with that?” I nodded. “Who was that?” “We got here a small town and this man I can't recognize, maybe a newcomer? Anyhow, here's your three bags full of cakes and bread and an extra chocolate mousse cup on the top." He said handing the plastic bags of boxed cakes and packaged bread. “Careful now! And be safe!” A quick stop to the fruit stalls for a bag of grapes than to the pet store to buy the rolled up doggie bed, had us both drained of energy and my body pleaded to be rested. Ha ha, not yet. 20min of walking drained our legs, Que begged for some bread which I was happy to give. I spotted a wooden bench close to a beautiful view of the fountain close to the crystal clear pond. An ache that resembled a muscle trying to commit suicide relaxed as I landed butt first onto the comforting seat. A deep sigh of relief escaped my breath then looked through the bags of sweet pastries. “Cream buns… or mango cake?” “Mango cake with honey rolls please.” He gobbled the piece of cake in bite then went for the honey rolls. What a fat dragon… but then again I bought it so it makes me just as fat… damn it, my mind worked against me. I leaned back onto the supportive backrest and stared into the light blue void of the sky, it's been too long since that time. We struggle to find our desires only to end up not needing it in the first place… Our eyes lock onto what we want and push away what we need. I shook my head from the ghostly thoughts and turned to see Que resting his head on my knee. “Are you feeling alright?” A sigh escaped my lips, it was too dangerous for people to know the truth and too dangerous for me to think in certain ways. Who knows what disaster might happen with a single thought that was unconsciously thought? “I could be better, let's head back home” With a quick nod, we both got up and headed back home carrying a heap of bags and a rolled up dog bed. A strange feeling pierced through my body. Cold eyes glared into my very being and breathed a frosty breath on the back of my neck. I turned around alert. The pond drained the energy into its dried up mouth leaving the world a normal scene. Everything had fallen back into place, leaving a trail of a fading scent of abnormality. “Are… you sure you're feeling alright?” “Yeah… just something I felt didn't… seem right” “Let's go home and sleep it off and let's talk about it at home.” I nodded, whatever it was, it was close and had locked on its target.
