Chapter 1

{Kiera's P.O.V} There I was, stood looking into the bathroom mirror, staring right through my reflection. Looking into my eyes, which are composed of dark brown circles edging inwards in an embré of lighter brown, with green flecks sprinkled across the cornea. I slowly move my eyes down and see the freckles in a ribbon across my nose. I always hated my freckles, but as I had gotten older I realised they gave me character and matched the brown colour of my hair. I stood silently, watching as the image before me felt detached. "Kiera!"- I heard my name being called for what felt like the hundredth time today. I took a deep breath and exhaled while I looked at myself in the mirror one more time. I realised I didn't know who was looking back at me anymore, my eyes felt lost, like they belonged to someone else. "Kiera!" he shouted again as I was coming out of the bathroom. "There you are, I've been shouting you. Why didn't you answer me?". he said through gritted teeth. I had no idea why this man was so angry all of the time but I hated it. A moment passed but I didn't answer. I knew no matter what I said, it wouldn't have been the right answer. Its been this way for years. "Well? Answer me, damn it!" he scolded. He slapped me across the face, but it didn't even register. It never did anymore. His facial expression didn't even change as he effortlessly glided his hand through the air again and slapped me for a second time. He's eyes stared at me, painfully. "Fine. Have it your way." he said, while he smirked. If I would have answered him it would have ended the same way, so what was the point of trying. He grabbed my tiny wrist and dragged me through the hallway and down the narrow stairs. I knew where we were going... the basement. Although it was relentlessly dark, cold and damp, it ment I had a break from being in the presence of him. When I was brought here; at age 12, almost 6 years ago, I panicked at the thought of being locked down here. The walls were different tones of grey, with cracked plaster and coated in cobwebs. It smelt like a typical dewy basement. There was no natural light, only a vent in the top corner of the wall. For the length of time I am down here, food is out of the question and I get a small dish of water to drink out of every other day. People treat stray animals better than he treats me. But now I know when I get locked down here, its a much welcome break from the beatings and mental torture. He had the basement door hidden so people wouldn't ask what was down there. He opened the door and dragged me down the creaky wooden steps. "This will teach you, you i***t!" he shouted as he threw me across the room. "Lets make it a record 14 days!" he said as he laughed and locked the door. Although it was a welcome break, 14 days without food was hard to hear. I wasn't sure I would actually make it through but I had to try. "Bring it on, Dex!" I shouted after him, but I was met with silence. He always knew how to emotionally get to me and I hated him. Dex was bigger than me and was about 5' 11. He had dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. He would have been quite attractive if he wasnt such a monster. He wasn't overly muscular and had quite a slim build but was obviously taller and stronger than I was, which is why I quickly learned as a child I couldn't win. I never knew why he took me or what his end plan was. I had overheard him talking to one of his male friends about him making me work as one of his lap girls in his club but I wasn't sure when that would happen. I didn't know if he planned to let me have a bit more freedom or when all of this would end, after all it has been 6 years. As I lay there on the floor, my thoughts consumed me and tears slowly started slipping down my cheeks. Maybe someday soon I'll be able to put my plan into place and get out of here. _______________________________________________ {Unknown P.O.V} "Dylan, my meetings finished early and I need to run a few errands around town. Get the car ready, I'll be down in five." "Yes, Alpha". Dylan replied through the intercom. I let out a sigh as my nine hour office day came to an end. I had to admit, with business being so good at the moment, the hours were long and the days hard. I was glad I had my team around me to keep things running smoothly, especially in the tech business. If you start slowing down, the competition starts to take over and I had worked too hard to get to the top. I looked around the room and smiled. I had achieved so much in the four years of becoming Alpha and starting my own business in security. The room was an open plan with windows stretching right across the width of one wall, with views of the whole city. The walls were painted in a very light duck egg blue with various pieces of modern art majestically sprawled across the others. The floor was a soft wooden laminate in light grey. My desk central to the windows was made of light grey glass, edged in silver. Both blue and grey are the colours of our pack, so my office reflects this. In the corner sat black leather couches nesting a coffee table and a drinks cabinet filled with my favourite collection of whiskeys. I closed my laptop and headed for the door. As I left I told my assistant, Casey to make sure my room was locked up and then she could take the rest of the day off. It was Friday after all and the office was closed of a weekend. "Thank you, Mr. Rivers" she said softly. Casey had been my assistant since I started the company and had seen it as a small company in its infancy right the way through, to the now multi-million dollar business. "No problem, see you Monday!" I said as I entered the lift. I pressed the button to take me down to the garage where Dylan was waiting with the car. As we drove through the city running errands, all I could think about was finding my mate. I was 22 and still had no idea who she was, I really needed a Luna to help me run my pack, but I was getting impatient and had slept with most of the unmated females in the pack just to let out some of the frustration. Finally, we arrived at our last stop before we would be returning home, it was a local nightclub that wanted to meet face to face to get a quote for top range security tech. I stepped out of the car and looked up at the building before me. This would be a big job, so I needed to stay focused. I started walking around the building, trying to get a feel for the size when the sweetest scent hit me. I c****d my head slightly and tried to focus, wondering what it could be. It was like cotton candy and I needed to find where it was coming from. "Mate" "What, where?" "I don't know, but I can sense her... go and find her". "OK, but I can't see anyone" "I don't care, find our mate!" I needed to focus before Colt took over. He was just as eager to find our mate as I was. Then I noticed it, the scent was coming up through a vent in the building next door. "I needed to get in, but how?", I said to myself.
