Chapter 12: The King's Challenge A low growl rumbled through the sacred valley. Kael's silver eyes blazed with fury as he stood between Lyra and the mysterious Alpha King. "You will leave my territory," Kael ordered. Lucien Noctis remained perfectly still. His crimson eyes never left Lyra. "I did not come to claim land." "I came to answer the Moon Goddess's call." The silence that followed was broken only by the wind. Then Elder Miriam stepped forward, leaning heavily on her staff. "Stand down, Alpha Kael." Kael turned to her in disbelief. "Elder?" "The Goddess herself declared the bond broken. No Alpha has the authority to challenge her judgment." Kael clenched his jaw, but before he could reply, a sharp pain pierced his chest once more. His wolf snarled inside his mind. You rejected our mate. Now you must bear the consequences. Kael staggered but refused to show weakness. --- Lucien slowly approached Lyra. He stopped several feet away and lowered himself onto one knee. The entire valley gasped. An Alpha King... Kneeling. Not in defeat. In respect. His deep voice was gentle. "Lyra Ashthorne." "I have waited through ten centuries and countless full moons." "I swore that when fate finally returned you to this world..." "...I would never force your hand." He placed his right hand over his heart. "You owe me nothing." "If you ask me to leave now..." "I will." Shock rippled across the crowd. No one had expected such humility from a king whose very presence commanded fear. Lyra searched his crimson eyes. There was immense power within them. But there was no arrogance. No possessiveness. Only patience... and a loneliness that mirrored her own. Before she could answer, a scream echoed from the edge of the valley. "ROGUES!" Dozens of black-cloaked rogues burst from the surrounding forest. Unlike the previous attacks, these wolves bore strange crimson markings glowing across their bodies. "The Shadow Fang Clan!" Elder Miriam cried. "They're here for the First Luna!" Chaos erupted. Warriors rushed to defend the pack. Kael shifted instantly into his massive gray wolf and charged into battle. Lucien's expression darkened. "So they found her sooner than I expected." He looked at Lyra. "Stay behind me." "I can fight," she protested. "I know." His lips curved into the faintest smile. "That's exactly why I'm worried." With a flash of black light, Lucien shifted. The enormous obsidian wolf Lyra had met in the forest stood before her once again. He was even larger than Kael's wolf. Silver markings glowed across his fur like constellations, and his crimson eyes burned with ancient power. The rogues hesitated. One of them whispered in terror, "The Shadow King..." Another dropped his weapon. "It really is him." Lucien released a single thunderous howl. The sound rolled across the valley like an earthquake. Several rogues collapsed to their knees, unable to withstand the force of his Alpha aura. The remaining attackers charged anyway. The battle had begun. Lyra reached for the silver pendant around her neck. It flared with brilliant light. For the second time, silver flames wrapped around her body. This time... She did not fear them. She raised her hand instinctively. A wall of shimmering silver fire erupted between the rogues and the innocent pack members, shielding the children and elders from harm. Everyone stopped and stared. Even Lucien looked at her with quiet awe. "The Silver Flame..." he murmured. "It has awakened faster than the prophecy foretold." High above the battlefield, hidden among dark clouds, a hooded figure watched with cold amusement. "So..." "The King has arrived." "And the First Luna has begun to awaken." The figure smiled beneath the hood. "Excellent." "It will make destroying them both far more satisfying." Far below, neither Lyra nor Lucien knew that the true enemy had finally revealed its interest. The battle in the valley was only the beginning. The real war... Was about to begin.
