Eloise wasn't expecting Asher to take her to a plush boutique when he said they needed to have a change of clothes. Probably her monthly salary would fall short if she wanted to buy even a single dress from there. But Asher was picking clothes at a whim, asking her to try one after the other.
In the beginning, Eloise thought nothing suited her since Asher would ask her to try another. At first, she was pissed. Her ankle was hurting. She had to move a lot. But the more she tried on, the more she felt relaxed. Now she wasn't thinking about her dreadful day, but the costly clothes she had a chance to put on. She thought she looked pretty in all of it, even if Asher didn't approve of any. When she picked up a pink body-hugging dress that reached her knees, Asher seemed to like something finally.
Eloise checked again in the mirror. The dress accentuated her hourglass figure, making her look taller than she was. It definitely gave her a bold, confident look. But it also gave away her shape and a bit of her cleavage. Was it all that the men were interested in a woman? She hissed, changing out of the pink dress into a peach-colored floral frock dress that would cost her a little less. She didn't want to burn her pocket. Also, the dress didn't reveal anything, despite giving her a charming appearance. Eloise decided she would settle for that dress, irrespective of Asher's choice.
When Eloise moved towards the counter to drain her bank account, she saw Asher was already there to settle the bill. He had already changed his clothes, looking as handsome as ever. He glanced at her, grinning.
It shocked Eloise to see him peep like that. She wondered if he really smiled. She might have imagined a smile on his face, but she could bet it was there when he saw her.
"Add the price of the dress she is wearing as well." Asher handed the salesperson his credit card, who was more than happy to be able to sell so many clothes.
Eloise thought for a second. Taking his gift would be unfavorable. Since she didn't stop him from coming to this expensive place, it was her problem to pay for the dress, even if it would drain her. She shouldn't make him pay for her dress.
But when she saw the salesgirl who was showing her the clothes wrap several of the dresses that she had tried, including the body-hugging pink dress, she didn't dare to offer to buy them. Was this how rich people shop?
"Why are you spending so much on me?" Eloise asked once they were out of the shop. She was beginning to feel burdened. Did this man harbor other intentions? No one buys luxury products for their brother's tutor!
"Because you are worth it, I suppose." Asher flashed a small smile, getting inside the car.
Now it was Eloise's turn to feel restless. She stood on the road, looking around in sadness. She wouldn't be able to afford a hotel room in that plush area. To add, she couldn't even walk properly. The nearest bus stop was still far from the shop. But she shouldn't continue taking favors from him. He might have hidden intentions of which she had no idea.
"It will be raining soon. Get inside." Asher rolled down the car window, pointing towards the cloudy sky.
Eloise sighed. It was indeed a bad day. But she didn't want to get inside the car. Neither did she feel comfortable accepting the other dresses. As if God was against her, a loud rumbling and crashing noise followed a huge lightning crack that pierced through the night sky. She didn't hesitate to get in the car where it was safer.
Asher chuckled. But when Eloise turned to look at the shopping bags in a dilemma, he realized she was feeling overburdened. He realized that he should have considered her views while overspending on her. But he had wanted to do those things for her for a while. And now that an opportunity came on his path, he failed to see anything beyond his excitement.
"I can't accept all those other clothes." Eloise looked down, playing with the hem of her new dress.
"What? They aren't for you, but for someone, I know. She is of your size. I am sorry if I gave you the wrong idea." Asher lied.
Even if he wanted to adore her, spoil her, and give her the best, he knew he had to be patient with her. He had been seeing her for a year now. She was a woman with pride and integrity.
His reply left Eloise confused but also relieved. She wasn't sure if he was lying or not. But she didn't ponder further.
"Let's eat something." Asher changed the topic to make her feel comfortable. Eloise nodded her head, feeling better.
Eloise knew he was going to take her somewhere extravagant again. She felt like it was a one-sided date that he secretly dragged her onto somehow. But then she received a text that spoiled her mood again. It was from Isla.
"What happened?" Asher probed when he saw her mood sour again.
She was checking her phone too many times. And every time, she would feel more pathetic. The glow in her face keeps fading, making her look miserable. When Eloise did not reply, he snatched her phone, making her startle. But she hung her head low, feeling dejected and humiliated. Drake was with Isla in the pub they had met for the first time at Phoebe's party. How could he take her there, of all places, the day they broke up? Or was he celebrating their separation at that particular place to disgrace her even more?
Asher sighed in disgust. The man had no shame, he thought. "Did he cheat on you with that slut?" He scoffed, immediately regretting some of the decisions he had made. He shouldn't have trusted Drake, ever. "Where is it?" he asked, clutching the steering so hard that his fingers started to pain a little.
"Leave it!" Eloise mumbled, a teardrop escaping her eyes. She felt humiliated. She felt like someone was squeezing her heart, making her suffocate.
"Or we could give them back what they deserve," Asher suggested, raising his brows. Eloise couldn't understand what he meant, but it did sound lucrative. It felt like an irresistible offer.
