The stupid lawyer kicked me out of his office, but I wouldn't be deterred until he sees for himself what has happened. They said he's the director of the BG law firm, so why didn't he know the kinds of agreements drafted for their clients? I was sure he was pretending not to know. Well, when I go there tomorrow and the following day, he'd be forced to grant me an audience and listen to my grievances.
I stood for a while outside the office building after the security had kicked me out. I made a plan to visit this place tomorrow until he hears me out.
I decided to go to the restaurant and check how things are. Things were moving smoothly, so I went home to relax. On my way home, I prayed to see Ethan in the house or anywhere around the house. Just to vent my anger and frustration on him. I was sure he'd be avoiding me like a plague. After stealing from me and almost ruining my life, he dare not be anywhere in my sight range.
I proceeded to the fridge to grab a bottle of chilled water. I took large gulps to quench my thirst so quickly that I had streams of water running by the side of my mouth and down the front if my dress. I didn't know how thirsty I was.
I looked around the house. I wouldn't have believed it if anyone had told me that Ethan would betray me. For three years, I thought our relationship had been magical. Even though I was unable to conceive, I thought Ethan loved me still.
My phone rang, pulling me out of my ocean of sad thoughts. It was Kora.
“Hey, girlfriend”, I answered the phone tiredly.
“Yo! Why do you sound like you were hit by a truck?” She said in her cheerful way.
“Maybe that's because I was hit by something that felt like a truck.”
“What? What happened? Are you okay? Are you hurt? Who hurt you?” The questions tumbled out of her mouth with so much speed that I could hardly hear her.
“Calm down, Kora. I went to the managing director's office at BG law firm but guess what, I was thrown out by security”, I said dryly.
“What?!” I quickly moved my phone away from my ear before she made me go deaf.
“I made him know that I know Ethan bribed them to draft an agreement as callous as that, but then he called the security to throw me out.”
“Oh my God! How could he!”
“Yeah, that was what I asked myself, too.”
“But Emily, did you go there to rave and rant?”
“Who cares? I had to tell him my mind somehow.”
“True true, but you know it's an official place. Maybe you shouldn't have shouted as much as you did?”
“I had to, Kora. Ethan has ruined me. He filed for divorce and emptied our accounts, even my investment. Everything is gone. How does he expect me to run the restaurant with literally nothing. I have to get him for what he has done to me”, I lamented bitterly.
“I understand. But I think you should try going back and explain in a more calm manner. Or what do you think?”
“I plan on going tomorrow and every day till I get someone that will listen to me. I don't care if they call me a mad woman.”
I was breaking down again. Silent tears streamed down my face as I sobbed quietly. Kora consoled me before hanging up after I had promise her to eat and sleep well. That night, I cried myself to sleep without eating.
I woke up the next morning feeling like a real truck had hit and mashed me up overnight. Still, I freshened up and ate some cereal before replying to my mails. I picked an outfit – a skinny jean and a casual top. I paired the look with my Balmain boots and styled my hair into a bun. I accessorized with my silver necklace and stud earrings.
When I got to the law firm, I met Mr Rein in the premises getting out of his sleek car. I composed myself and got out of my car to meet him. His countenance changed immediately when he saw me. His chiseled jaw became hard and his eyes became dark and hooded. I moved closer to him. The man was towering over me. His long legs were clad in snug grey-coloured pants and his pristine shirt was well tucked. The shirt was rolled along the sleeves showing hairy caramel skin.
“Good morning, Mr Phillip Rein”, I said in the most formal way possible, plastering a half smile on my face.
“I really don't know why you're here again. Please, leave now if you do not want an event like that of yesterday to reoccur”, He grunted and planted his feet firmly in a defensive stance. I was tempted to laugh out loud at this act but the situation on ground was more serious than finding his actions funny.
“I'm not here to fight, Mr Rein. I simply want you to hear me out and give me some explanations.”
He calmed a bit and looked at me suspiciously. I was sure he'd be having an internal battle on whether to hear me out or not. He finally made a decision.
“Okay. You may come in but I promise you I'd call the police if you try to play smart or start screaming the way you did yesterday.”
“Alright. Deal.”
We entered the building and passed through the reception. A petite receptionist greeted us.
“Good morning, Mr Rein. Good morning, ma'am.”
“Morning”, Mr Rein said back rudely.
I gresponded the greeting but didn't miss the lingering gaze she gave Mr Rein and the slightly wicked one she threw at me. Well, someone's in her feelings.
He opened the door to his office and sauntered inside. He hung his jacket on the coat hanger and sat down heavily. I sat down on the same chair I used the previous day.
The next thing he said made my heart skip.
“I have a proposal for you, too.”
