CHAPTER 1

“ Darling, your dinner is ready,” I said to Ethan, who was seated on the couch in the living room, deeply engrossed in what he was doing on his phone but I got no response from him which got me alarmed, making me move closer to him. “ Your food is on the dining table,” I repeated, tapping his shoulder lightly. His next reaction was the least thing I expected from him, “ I heard you the first time, stop pestering me because of ordinary food,” he responded harshly, throwing my hand off his shoulder. “ You should have paid more attention to your barrenness,” he added with a barely audible voice, standing up from where he sat, I stood still while staring at his receding back in daze. “ What exactly is happening?” I turned around, asking no one in particular. We were still very fine yesterday night, did I perhaps offend him? I stared at the steaming hot food on the table not knowing exactly what to do with it. I left it and followed him to the room. “ What exactly is going on? Did I do anything wrong?” I angrily spitted, badging into the room. Ethan has already changed his clothes which means that he is going out. “ You never told me that you were going anywhere. We were meant to go to the restaurant together today but we didn't because of our wedding anniversary celebration. Where are you off to?” I reminded him but he didn't pay any attention to what I was saying. My mind became bothered and I was almost on the verge of tears because this is new and has never happened before. “ Meet me at Palace hotel for the celebration,” he muttered coldly and instantly left the room like I was some form of plague. His temperament this morning is unusual and different from his normal self, I entered the bathroom and soaked myself in the hot tub. I didn't spend too much time in the bathroom so as not to waste his time. I dressed myself in a peach floral knee length gown coupled with the white Louis Vuitton bag that he gifted me months ago, I applied little makeup which gave me a fresh and highschool girl aura. I smiled at my reflection In Front of the mirror and left the house, Locking the door behind me. “ You are welcome ma'am,” the waitress greeted me with a professional smile as I made my way into the hotel's restaurant. I provided them with the table number and I was directed there. I quickly sighted Ethan's straight back with his perfect posture, the hotel's environment was serene and lovely, the warm color of the chandelier and the background song added a hint of romance to the atmosphere. Just the type of environment I love. I blushed and arranged myself as I made my way to where he was seated, “ hope I didn't keep you waiting?” I asked with a cheerful smile and he just hummed at my question. “ Let's order what we will eat,” I proposed and called for a waitress. The pretty waitress that greeted me when I arrived came to us with a menu and we both selected simple dishes. “ Your orders will arrive soon,” she said and excused herself. Silence ensued between Ethan and I with both of us deliberating on who to speak first. “ I have something to tell you,” his hoarse voice rang out and I stared into his hazel eyes In anticipation. “ Actually, I don't know… I don't know how to say this,” he trailed off before he continued. He is not the type to why off or act like this so that got me more curious. “ Hit the spot, I am all ears,” I assured with a polite smile. He scratched his hair before he reached for something in his pocket, he brought out a plain white envelope and passed it across to me. “ Is there something important inside? Can I check it later?” I asked about to dip the envelope into my purse. “ I think it's best for you to check it here,” he suggested and I gave up on the idea of checking it later. I tore open the seal and dang! I schemed through the heading, my heart beat faster at the title. My hand started shaking and I began to sweat profusely as I read the content of the later. “ Divorce? What prompted it?” I asked, trying my best to keep calm. He just stared at me like a dummy, making me get more infuriated. “ Can't you answer me? Is divorce a joke to you?” I was almost screaming at this point. Memories of my past started rushing to my head and I couldn't hold my tears back. “ Yes, divorce isn't a joke but why should I remain married to you? A barren,” he dropped the last sentence like a bombshell making my head go blank. His mother has always tormented me with this barrenness, he always assures me that he doesn't care but how come he is divorcing me because of this issue. “ I am my mother's only son and you expect me to remain like this without giving that poor woman a grandchild,” he retorted back at me, making me seem like the bad person. Streams of tears continued to drop from my eyes at his continuous soul shattering and hurtful words. “ I won't sign this agreement,” I declared I couldn't take it any longer and dashed out of the restaurant. It was dawn already and the streetlight cascaded on my lone walking figure, I continued to sob as I made my way down the street. I finally collapsed under a tree as the haunting memories that I have tried my best to bury rushed back to my head. The memory of the day my parents divorced came back to my head and I felt my heart squeeze in pain. My father loved my mother so much and vice versa, everything was going on fine until the night of my nineteenth birthday where my dad got drunk and mistakenly had a nightstand with another woman. The woman continued to pester my father after that time and unfortunately, my mother eavesdropped on their conversation which ended their marriage. I already vowed never to end up like them but here I am, about to get divorced just like my parents. A call entered my phone, jotting me out of my thoughts. “ Hello who is this,” I picked up without bothering to check the caller id, the receiving end replied and my expression instantly became solemn. “ What? Impossible!” I screamed, refusing to believe what I just heard .
