Evan I am standing Upstairs, on the balcony of The Beetles, the biggest club in GoldRidge pack. Downstairs, the bass rolls through the floor in deep, heavy waves that vibrate in your chest before you even make it to the bar. The lights are low, broken only by flashes of neon pinks, purples, electric blues that streak across faces slick with sweat. The DJ, half-hidden behind a wall of lights and fog, lifts one hand high, teasing the drop before sending the crowd roaring into another beat. The air smells of citrus from spilled drinks, perfume. I have my eyes set on something. Someone. She stands in the midst of her friends, her hair neatly tied into a ponytail, a red tank top and a black skirt that barely covers her thighs and shows the curve of her ass, the lights laminates on her skin, she stands in the spotlight, her eyes bright as the sun. She barely notices me, as she dances with her friends, she’s f*****g beautiful. Ever stared at someone and knew she would be the death of you? Yet you can’t stay away, she likes a drug that should kill me but still keep me alive, enough to feel the pain. Throwing her head, she laughs as one of the girls whisper something into her ears. My fingers itch to reach against the nape of her neck, to ruin her perfect hair and turn her into the flower I want her to be. A f****d up one. “Damn Evan, she is never going to be yours no matter how much you try. She is your sister for f**k’s sake” Enzo breathes out leaning against the rail, one hand holding a bottle of champagne. “Step-sister” I corrected him, “Same thing, your Father would kill you if you dare” he adds, a truth that tastes so bitter in my tongue. “If he can’t have her, I can” Caden joins the chat, he pulls a silly look as he glances at Emberly. Too engrossed in her that he couldn’t see the cold look on my face, “I would give anything to f**k that tight ass” he continues. I grabbed him by the collar, pulling him a few inches off the ground, “If you f*****g touch her, I will kill you” he knew that my threats always came to pass. They know me for one thing, I never share what belongs to me, especially when that person is Emberly. “Easy boy” Enzo cuts between us, and I slowly let go of Caden, suppressing the urge to smash his face against a wall. “We get it, you want her. But what are you going to do about that?” He draws my attention the motherfucker now standing beside her. I hold firmly on the railing, “Asher” Caden says his name with venom in his tongue. The hot air-head had his arms wrapped around Emberly while she danced on him, a stupid grin on his face. “You know you have to let her go, she has a mate now” Enzo tells me, with a tap on my shoulder. Enzo was the closest friend I had, he knew more about me than the boys. We were like brothers brought together by a sacred oath and we have been that way ever since. “It changes nothing” I inform him. “It does, she is never going to accept you Evan, she sees you as her brother and nothing more” I hate that he was right, I hate that all these years I have not done a thing to make her realize I wanted her. But it’s not easy when the girl you have ever dreamed of is your stepsister and it makes it even worse to know that she has a mate and the mate isn’t you. “What did I miss?” Beau joins us, the last member of our crew, he peers his eyes down and see Emberly with Asher, then he nods his head. Beau was a man of little words, he only spoke when he wanted to and quickly understood the situation. I had my doubts first if he was good enough for us but I fear he might be the worst of all us when s**t turns dark. “I will get us a couple more drinks and we will leave” Enzo says and grabs the boys away. I keep my eyes on her, watching the lovely smile on her face, the way she leans into his neck and he sniffs her hair. Fucking pervert. He seemed distracted the moment a red haired girl walks into the club, his eyes widen then his body language changed. She walks towards the bar and takes a seat, then she reaches for her phone and types away. In a second Asher pulls his phone from his pocket, he bits his lips when he reads it then flashes her a little glance. He kisses Emberly on the neck then leaves, the girl still sits there for about a minute. Emberly is now surrounded by her friends, she looks a little down, and they try to cheer her up. She nods her at head at whatever Sal says. Then they walk towards the bar and take one more shot each. I turned to where the red head was but she was gone, so I strutted down the stairs. “Evan, where are you going?” I could hear Enzo call me but I ignore him. I searched around and found the girl leaving the club through the back door, the same way Asher had left. “Evan” a voice calls behind me. Still I ignore it and walk towards the door, my instincts tell me to mind my business but Emberly is my business which meant her mate was also my business. The next thing I see makes my blood boil.
