The Shadow That Loved Her.
Chapter One: The Girl Beneath the Moon The night the shadows whispered her name, Seraphina Vale thought she was losing her mind. She had always been different. Not in the way people noticed at first. She looked like any other young woman living in the quiet village of Asterwyn — a girl who worked at the old apothecary, collected wildflowers at dawn, and spent her evenings reading forgotten books by candlelight. But there were things about her that no one could explain. Flowers bloomed when she touched them. Candles burned brighter when she was angry. And sometimes, when she looked into a mirror, she saw a woman staring back at her who was not her reflection. Tonight was different. Tonight, the shadows were calling. Seraphina stood alone in the ancient forest outside the village, her cloak pulled tightly around her shoulders as the cold wind moved through the trees. She should have been afraid. Everyone in Asterwyn knew the forest was forbidden after sunset. They said creatures lived there — creatures that hunted lost travelers and whispered promises before stealing their souls. But Seraphina had never been able to ignore a mystery. Especially not one that felt like it was calling directly to her. She looked down at the strange mark on her wrist. A black symbol shaped like a crescent moon had appeared three nights ago. The village healer had called it a curse. The old priest had called it a warning. But Seraphina felt something else. It felt like a beginning. “Why did you bring me here?” she whispered. The forest answered. Not with words. With a feeling. A pull. Something ancient waking beneath the earth. The trees around her suddenly went silent. No insects. No birds. No wind. Nothing. Then she heard footsteps. Slow. Powerful. Coming from behind her. Seraphina froze. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but her body refused to move. A voice emerged from the darkness. “After two hundred years…” The voice was deep, cold, and impossibly familiar. “…I finally found you.” Seraphina turned. And for the first time in her life, she saw the man who haunted her dreams. He stood between the trees like he belonged to the darkness itself. Tall. Beautiful. Terrifying. His black hair moved slightly in the wind, and his silver eyes stared at her with an intensity that made her heart race. Not from fear alone. She hated that. She hated that some part of her recognized him. “Who are you?” she demanded. The stranger stepped closer. The shadows moved with him. “I am the man you were born to destroy.” A chill traveled through her. “Then why do you look like you already know me?” For a moment, something almost human crossed his face. Pain. Regret. Longing. Then it disappeared. “My name is Damon Ravencroft.” The name meant nothing to her. Until the forest reacted. The ground trembled. The trees bent away from him. And somewhere far away, bells began ringing. Seraphina’s eyes widened. Everyone knew that name. The Shadow King. The immortal ruler who had disappeared centuries ago. The monster from every nightmare story told to children. The man who supposedly destroyed kingdoms. “You’re dead,” she whispered. Damon’s lips curved into a faint, humorless smile. “So they told you.” Seraphina stepped backward. “You’re a monster.” The words should have angered him. Instead, he looked almost disappointed. “I have been called worse.” The darkness around him stretched toward her, but it stopped before touching her skin. As if it feared her. Damon noticed. His expression changed. “You still have no idea what you are.” Her heart pounded. “What are you talking about?” “You carry the blood of the first queen.” The world seemed to stop. “I’m not royalty.” “You were hidden.” “I’m not special.” His silver eyes softened. “You are the most dangerous person alive.” Seraphina shook her head. “No.” “Yes.” “No.” Damon moved closer. “You have spent your entire life believing you were powerless because someone wanted you to believe that.” His voice lowered. “But your power is waking.” The mark on her wrist suddenly burned. Seraphina cried out and grabbed it. A wave of energy exploded from her body. The forest lit up. Every flower beneath her feet bloomed at once. Damon stared at her. Not with fear. With wonder. “My queen…” The words made her angry. “I am not yours.” For the first time, the Shadow King looked surprised. Then amused. “You always say that.” Seraphina frowned. “Always?” Damon looked away. For a brief moment, he looked less like a monster and more like a man carrying centuries of loneliness. “In every lifetime.” Her breath caught. “What does that mean?” Before he could answer, a roar echoed through the forest. Something moved between the trees. Something large. Something hungry. Damon’s expression instantly changed. The softness vanished. “Behind me.” Seraphina glared. “I don’t take orders from strangers.” “You should start.” “I said no.” A creature burst from the darkness. It had the body of a wolf but the size of a horse, with glowing red eyes and claws like blades. Seraphina froze. Damon stepped forward. The shadows gathered around his hands. “Stay behind me, Seraphina.” This time, she heard something different in his voice. Not control. Not arrogance. Fear. Fear for her. The creature attacked. The forest exploded into darkness. And Seraphina watched the man everyone called a monster fight like someone who had spent centuries protecting the world that hated him. For the first time, she wondered… What if the stories were wrong? What if the Shadow King was never the villain? And what if the most dangerous thing in the world… Was not his darkness? But the way he looked at her like she was the only light he had left.
