Chapter 16 Jake's POV, “Who told you to do this?” Emily exclaimed. “Look officers, I'm old, I want to live the rest of my days in peace. I've told you what I could. Do whatever you want with this. And get out of my property.” “Alright. Thanks for your help.” And we at last left the house. “Emily, you need to control yourself. We can't do this to civilians.” “He’s a criminal. Aiding and embedding is a crime, hiding the truth is a crime, forging medical reports is a crime. They all knew what they were covering up, but they never decided to speak up.” “Not everyone can stand up against evil. You should know this better than anyone. Not everyone is strong enough, Emily. Now, you are coming with me to my house. we have some things to do.” It’s not like I don’t feel angry, but I know how to keep it in. That’s the first thing I've learned as a cop. I need to control emotions, even if it is for the worst criminal who deserve everything worst. Our job is not to punish them ourselves, but to bring him to justice. I took at the time and it’s nine already, I will starve soon. We’ve ordered Chinese takeouts and eat while sorting through the things we know. “So, Ari left with this guy from that club, then how did Nick end up with her in that warehouse?” I said organising the pictures I've had of the crime scene and the mysterious guy with a skull on his wrist. “He tried to protect her.” Emily added. “Therefore, those protective wounds.” “Then why was he in different room then her? What was the point of planting his suicide in another room from where she was found? What was the point of dragging a dead body across the property just to do that?” “Didn’t you see?” she picks up a photo from the pile of the room where the body was Ari, gagged and crushed was found. “This place was used as cold storage.” The refrigeration was visible in those photos. “They put him in the back room, near the furnace to speed up the decay. It makes it easier for them to prove Nick killed her, without the real autopsy it would’ve been much effortless for the prosecution.” “That makes sense. People went far enough to do all this. All these efforts to cover up the crime, so why don’t just not bother at all to do something like this? That will be much easier. Afterall no one bothered to go any deeper, they just— wait, who’s property is this?” I don’t think it was on any record. “They just say it’s abandoned." Emily read. “Wait, I think I need to make a call.” She picked up her phone. “Hello! Kent, write down this address, 4506 Hunts Point, building 9. I want you to find me the property owner. Yes! Alright. How long? Make it quick. Yeah, bye.” I don’t want to know who she called, but all I know is that her background didn’t just stop as a foster child. She had incredulous connections with strange people she never tells me about. “What did he say?” “It will take some time.” “Great, just great. We still have nothing.” “We have this autopsy.” “It won't prove who really planned all this. Giving it as evidence will only alert them and make them string first.” “Or it will draw them out of their hiding. People make stupid mistakes when they are scared.” Maybe she is right, but it’s too big of a risk that I'm not willing to take.. “If only we can find who this guy is, it will all be easier.” She stood up from the seat. “It’s not too late.” She said pulling up my hand. “For what?” “I feel like clubbing.” ** We went to the same club Ari went to those years ago. In the club the good vibes flow like a virus, but a good one. I went back in time, to my university days. This used to be my usual night, usual day, usual life, the club life. it was before I joined military and everything begin to change, everything that I thought will be my life changed. I chose a different path than anyone in my family and that ended up me here, right back at a club. “I'll get us a drink.” I moved through the crazy almost forgetting the real reason we are here. I just want to drink and dance and forget about all the bad things that goes through my head. “I'll come with you.” I nodded and we both went on towards the bar. “Great night…” I spoke as the bartender came to take our orders. “It’s every night. What would you like?” “G&T for me,” I say. “I'll just have wine.” “Right up.” “Do you think we can get anything in this crowd? Maybe we chose wrong day to be here” I say. “We can still try.” “Your drinks.” Bartender passed us our glasses. “You know my dad used to bring me here, he always said drinks here are the best.” Emily said, I thought she was trying to make small talks with the bartender, after all he is really attractive, Especially, for the females around. “Really, what did he order. Tequila, always.” He seems to be just as interested in those smirky flirts as she was. Is this my clue to go away? “Then he must've known my boss.” “I'll tell you a secret, they were besties.” They smile like there is something really funny which I don’t get. Maybe I'm a little uncultured or a lot. She pulls up her sleeves, “tattoo buddies. My dad gave him all the ink.”
