Chapter 15 Jake's POV, “That is all we wanted to know.” Emily stood up. “Thank you.” “Don’t worry anymore Mrs. Smith, this time you will have the closure you and Ari deserves.” “Thanks detectives. Please ask my anything, I'm ready to help with everything I can.” “We will.” We walked out to the front porch of her home. Ready to go to our car. “Officers,” she yelled back walking outside. “Yes?” I asked. “I think I saw something weird.” I looked at Emily. “Weird?” I walked closer. “At the trial, a man approached me, he was apologizing. He was crying. He said that he was sorry this happened to Ari, that this has to happen, that he couldn’t do anything about it.” “What does that mean?” I ask passing another look at my partner. “I don’t know.” “Do you know who that man was?” “He was the guy who did autopsy on my daughter.” “Thanks Mrs. Smith, I think this will help us.” ** “There are so many inconsistencies in all the witness reports, everyone had different descriptions of Nick, different descriptions of Ari. How can no one care about this girl, this guy?” Emily stomped her feet against the grass field. “What kind of world are we living in?” “A world that runs on power and connections.” I respond. I've witness I more than once with my dad. “Everyone knew he’s innocent, then why didn’t anyone spoke up? Why no one performed autopsy on him? He wouldn’t have to die as an offender.” “Where will we find this Chad?” I say pushing her so she will sit in the car. We don’t have much time, the sun is setting. We met the guy who provided the autopsy to Ari, Chad. A retired pathologist. “Hi,” he came out as a result of us knocking on his doorstep, “I'm detective Wilson and she is my partner detective Davis.” We showed him our badges and thanks to Emily for sneaking out my badge, he invited us in his home. His house was rather humble and beautifully decorated, one my mom would easily approve of, minimalistic yet chic. Just as we got in, he asked us to sit on the couch when his wife joined us too offering us if we would want something to drink. “How can I help you officers?” Emily pulled out the autopsy report from the folder passing it to him. “We wanted to ask you a few questions about this case.” She added. Just when he saw that report his face turned pale, frightened even. The couple passes each other some kind of looks before coming back to their senses. The biggest thing about liars is that they think they are good at lying, when they aren’t. and I'm confident whatever he will say after this moment will be a lie. “What do you remember about it?” He puts on a big smile, bigger than before. “It’s all written here officer. How can I remember this? It’s already been three years.” “You remember it’s been three years huh?” Emily plunged. “But you don’t remember the report you made was a fake one.” “What? What are you talkin about officer? Please get out. I'm not obliged to answer any of your questions. I'll ask you both to get out of my house before I dial 911.” We stood up ready to leave, at least we know he’s hiding something. There is nothing we can do, the commotion will only get big, that’s one thing we can't afford patronizing the case for. “Fine,” Emily yelled, “but let me ask you one question, how do you feel letting a criminal go? The one who really killed that girl. How do you live with yourself knowing that you framed a boy for horrors he never did? Does your wife know what kind of things you’ve done for money?” “Emily, stop it.” I pulled her back before she does something we’ll have to bear consequences of, I feared she will hit him cold. “Let’s go.” I pulled her by hand and she was resisting her feet on the ground. “Emily!” “Is this house, this money all worth it?” “Emily, let’s go.” She won't budge. “She’s right.” It was Chad who said those words. “She’s right. this house, this money and my life, it’s all worth it. I can't fight them, so I took money to keep my mouth shut. I took the money so I can provide a better life to my wife. I did that for money.” We were both star-struck from his confession. I have no words I can use to channel my thoughts, my feelings, my horrors from consuming me. “You framed an innocent boy, just so you can have some money?” “They are powerful people. I couldn’t do anything. all I could do was to keep my mouth shut and take that money.” “Who are those people? Who made you do that?” “Come in. I'll tell you.” We went back inside. We sat back on the couch when he walked to another room to bring some documents. “I've always kept this with me. this is all I can help you with.” He handed us. “What is this?” “I was told to destroy this. But I couldn’t. I always knew someone will come who will need this. I wished it will be before I die. This is the autopsy report I wrote of Nick.” “You had this all this time. and you never thought of using it.” Emily!!! Chad looks back at me. “He didn’t r**e the girl. He died two days before the girl. He had wounds on his body that indicated that he tried to protect her, and was killed by a trauma to his head. This is all I will tell you, now it’s all up to you how you are going to use this.”
