Chapter 36 Jake's POV, “Don’t worry, Jerry is on it. he’s flying from New York.” At least there is still some people who care for me even though I've made so many distances between us, I still have a part of my family by my side and that’s more than comforting. That’s sunlight, that’s water, that’s oxygen. I'm still alive because I have it. “Jake, promise me one thing.” I nod, I will do anything as long as she won't be any more upset. “When you are out, come back with me to New York.” I look at her, she means it or not. “I don’t want to leave you here alone after this. Leave this job, it never did you any good.” “Mom!” “No, you can't convince me anymore. You are coming back with me and that is final. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.” “You can't always protect me.” “I will protect you this time though. Do whatever you want in New York. It’s also fine if you don’t do anything. your trust will be enough to provide you a luxurious life.” I love living without all those tags that comes along with being John Wilson and Marie Wilson’s son. At the same time, I also knew I can't do this job anymore. I know there won't be anything to hold me in this town anymore if not this job. Emily is already lost. “Okay, I'll do as you say.” There was a slight smile on her face. the smile that made me forget everything that I had to go through for the sake of this job. She is right, all this job has given me is a distance between those I love and me. “Jake,” my eyes moved to mom’s back. Emily walked in but eyed mom before walking further in. “I've found your alibi. You can go home.” “What?” mom turned overjoyed, “really?” “He was recorded in a CCTV camera outside a bakery eleven miles away from the crime site at the time of a*******n. And we’ve pinged your location at the approximate time death. You were in the precinct.” Another officer follows her unlocking the latch of the lock. “You are free to go. No one find out about it.” “Thanks.” I try to smile my gratefulness, but I can't possibly smile no matter how grateful I feel. “Mom, can I talk to Emily for a minute.” “Yeah! Alright.” Mom left us isolated in the same room I had trouble existing. But now that I'm on the other side of the bars, the safe side, I don’t feel as suffocated as before. “I'm leaving this job.” I had to break it to her anyway. It’s sooner than later. “What?” “I promised mom already.” “But why?” “Because… because— I can't work in a place where no one trusts me, or believe in me. I would rather go back and live my life doing something else. I always knew this place isn’t for me. it’s better I stop trying.” “You can't do that to me. I worked these hours not to make up run away.” “I'm not running away. I'm leaving for good.” “But why? why is it necessary for you to leave? You can go back to work like nothing happened. Everything is still the same.” She wrapped her hand around my wrist. “No, everything isn’t the same anymore. How I feel about you is changed. Last night when you looked into my eyes and told me that you don’t trust me, everything ended then and there. Everything I thought we had.” I scoff. “I always do stupid things like this because I care for people more than I hate them. but it’s just me who think that way, and I've been proven wrong.” I moved past her, shrugging her hand from the hold on mine. “Do you know what hurts me the most, if you were in my place, I never would’ve doubted you. I never would’ve judged you with so much despise. Every ended.” I move past her when I feel my body swaying away and hit the wall. she pushed me, I didn’t expect that. “What do you want me to do? Trust you?” she jailed me between her hands from both sides. “That’s the least expected from you as my partner.” “How am I supposed to know what you think what you do?” “Excuses. You just make excuses.” “I'm not that great of a person to know everything, I'm not that great. How am I supposed to do the right thing.” “I'm sorry, but I can't stay anymore. You will always doubt me when things get rough. If there is no trust, even friendship won't stay. I'm sorry but please don’t stop me.”
