Chapter 41

Chapter 41 Jake’s POV, “Two hours.” Two hours are over and Jerry’s barely managed to stand on his feet. “You have to be strong.” Emily told me. I forget to be strong, twenty-seven year of practice and I've forgotten what it is like to be strong. “Jerry can't be strong right now. Your mom isn’t strong enough for this, but you are. You have to pull yourself together.” She was right. I need to do whatever it takes for support them so the damage is as less as possible. But how? “Is that even possible? How can I be strong? You know I'm not strong. You know it more than anyone. Things wouldn’t have been like this.” “I know that you love your family.” She hugged me, and I can finally think of some ways I can keep feeling this way, maybe I can be strong as she believes me to be. “I know that you love them enough to be their wall. You’ll be as strong as they need you to be. Just— just be with them.” We are outside the precinct. We are waiting for a call to tell us the results came in. but it’s taking so long. Longer than the amount of time I can pass depressed. Now, every part of me is shaking with a load-full of ‘what ifs’— so many what ifs. I'm relieved for at least one thing, that mom and dad is with Jerry. At least he can have it. We can't possibly be in the same space, I can't be the one to hug him and tell him it will be okay. We can't possibly find comfort with each other. But mom can do it for him. he needs it more than me. I lost a friend, a very special friend; his loss is so much bigger than I can imagine. He lost a part of himself. That too, with no closure. “Emily,” I made my mind to say what’s been bothering me for long enough that even when I don’t want, I'm going to ask her. “Do you think it’s the same killer? How can his M.O. change so drastically overnight? Maybe he’s someone else.” “Only the profiler can tell us if he is the same. But we do have a theory.” “A theory?” “Nothing is really confirmed yet, until the results are out.” “Still, it is something.” “We believe it’s connected to you.” “You think I killed her? I that the theory.” “That’s why I wasn’t telling you this. You love to take offense pretty quick. And no, I'm not talking about you killing her. I'm saying I think this killer is trying to send you a message.” “How?” “There has to be a reason why your DNA ended up with the last victim. There has to be a reason why only now he changed his M.O. how can he get your hair on a crime scene. Maybe you know him, maybe you’ve even seen him before.” She might be right. When I think about it, I've been too caught up to even think why my DNA was on a body. How did he get it, and why? Whatever I say right now will come out wrong. My brain isn’t working enough to solve this riddle so I would rather give it up for when this pain in my head is a bit less. I look at Emily, there is so much I think she wants to say, but she’s holding back, she’s holding it back probably because she thinks it’s not the time.
