Chapter 28

813 Words
Chapter 28 Jake’s POV, I don’t understand, why the sudden arrest, they said we’ll be going to wait till tomorrow after his wife put in her statement. I know we don’t need a warrant for his arrest, but this time it was his demand to wait a bit more to put us out of the danger of suspension, or allegations of theft. We weren’t even informed as the detectives leading the investigation about the arrest. “Captain.” We ran to enter the precinct; he was standing like he waited for us pacing in his cabin, worried, pacing, staring at his phone. He straightens up in an instant seeing us coming in. “What’s going on?” his expressions seemed too dull for someone who cares gravely about his reputation. Worried but not in a way he always gets when I mess things up. Worried in a way like something is about to go wrong, something bigger than just a media report and public rage. He acted weirdly earlier, he said Ari was his niece but he told us not to go and arrest Robby without a cover-up plan. As an uncle, he should go crazy knowing what she went through in her last day. I won't be surprised if he wants to want to kill him either. But he does none of that. Doctors said Robby is in a critical state. Critical enough to have difficulty breathing, his lungs are punctured by his own ribs digging into them. he’s cracked his skull and have at least two more major fractures. “We need to make a press release before anything goes wrong. We need to get public on our side.” It’s always been like this, to save the government and the precinct from the rage of public, they make sudden transfer for the police officer from one state to another. That was how I got transferred from New York to here. “Go and arrange the report. The media will be here soon.” We don’t say anything to him anymore. He’s not in the mood to listen. But we do wonder the same thing, why all of a sudden so much happened. He seems to see the conflict on our faces. “Detectives,” he folds his hands against his chest and takes support by the wall, “I had to arrest him before he tries to fled the country, I heard from a source he was making a run from the south of the border.” We nod for the reason of urgency and try to understand, but still how in the hell can he let Robby fell of the building. That too from his own home, over his own bedroom, and what was Ronny doing there anyway. He is dumb, but not dumb enough to try to run away from the terrace of his home. He’ll get nowhere. Maybe he just panicked, he didn’t know where to go and ended up in the roof. Yes, that makes sense. Emily and I sat on our desk. We need to make a report to present to the media with a statement on the causes and effect of the events and what our next plan will be. I'm better at doing this than Emily or even Captain. But it should be nicely prepared, Robby isn’t some low-level goon who fell off a building during arrest, he is the owner of many successful business, he has a political and social influence in this town. Many people worshipped him for his charity works. Fifteen percent of his annual income distributes equally between shelter homes, public schools and public health organizations. Looks like he’s been fighting his conscious for the monster he’s been. How can money ever cover up what he’s been doing in the darkness of his character? I take it back, he’s not just dumb, he is conscienceless, heartless, wild animal, he’s a monster who pounce at anyone who is weaker than him. No charity work can make up for the fact that he is a f*****g monster. “You need to relax.” I feel a hand on my shoulder, a hand that is a perfect definition of soothe. It was Emily’s. She looks at me with concern in her eyes, like she can see from my eyes what I'm feeling. I don’t know how she does it. “He’s a monster, I don’t know why we are worried that he’ll die. He should’ve been dead long ago.” “I know what you think and why but not everyone knows that side of his, we have to show them.” She’s right. I give her a smile telling her that I get what she meant. I get it and whatever my feelings for that monster are, I will still be faithful to what my duties are as an officer. **
