Chapter 23 Jake's POV Captain let his body fall on his chair, he never looked so defeated. So out of control. “Ari,” his head fell between his hands, “she was my niece.” I saw a tear slip out of his eyes. “She wanted to be just like me. She wanted to fight for justice, she wanted to punish criminals, she wanted to be a prosecutor like her father. She couldn’t even have her justice.” He’s usually an idol for all us officers, all his achievements, his knowledge, his confidence is always so envious. Today, he is just a weak man grieving for his niece. “I couldn’t even give her the justice she deserved.” “It’s not too late. We have the evidences.” “You stole them from his house. it is now invalid in the court of law. And this man, he is big enough to know how to turn things to his interests. He can press charges on you for theft and breaking and entering. You two will lose your job.” “But his face is in the video. It is relevant to the case, how can it will be invalid?” I don’t think an evidence so prude can ever be over look by the court. This is child abuse, murder and r**e. He sat like that, deep into thinking for a few seconds. “We can do this.” He straightened. “I want you to do one thing,” he added. “His wife. Find his wife, convince her to be your accomplice. If she is convinced that she gave you all the evidences, he will go to prison without any trial.” We nodded in agreement to his orders. “Until then, put the evidence inside that cupboard.” My heart bled from everything that has happened, I haven’t slept and that was just adding on to my anxiety. I never had so much work to lose my sleep over. I was the only one who couldn’t even sleep an hour. They all at least knocked themselves out for a few hours taking turns, I couldn’t. I'm running on caffeine, but just the thought of This monster behind bars fills my body with a new energy, I don’t feel slacking. So, while Emily drove, I called Mrs. Smith. She picked up in no time. “I found the evidence, Mrs. Smith.” I added. “Really?” she shrieked and all I heard after that was cries and whimper and heavy breath. “You found who did this to my daughter. God bless you, god bless you. It was him, it was that man? He did all that.” “He’ll be punished Mrs. Smith. Just a bit of wait, and he will get what he deserves. I'll call you when we caught him.” “We’re here.” the car was halted outside their café. “How did you know we’ll find her here?” I ask. “People these days love sharing everything they do to people who don’t give a flying damn.” She flicked her phone to my face. “Checked into Beans & Bars ten minutes ago.” I nodded. “That saves a lot of times.” I wanted this thing to be done today. So, I have a reason to celebrate my birthday. “Let’s go.” ** Epilogue – She cleaned her tears off her cheeks. Her eyes that were pitiful filled with hatred when she picks up her phone to speed dial his boyfriend. “Our plan worked.” She says. “Stupid fucker kept all the evidence of Ari and Nick in his own office.” Julia Smith, her full name, she said without a fault. “He was sick enough to record all that, but stupid enough to don’t even care to hide it.” She didn’t care he was actually talking about her daughter. For her, she was already a golden goose. Firstly, she used Ari for child support. Then, to blackmail her r****t to squeeze money out of him. “I told you his pride will kill him one day.” They both laugh through the phone. “He should’ve just gave us those five millions.” The man spoke. “If we can't get anymore, he should pay for his sins.”
