Chapter 34

Chapter 34 Jake's POV “What is going on? Won't you say anything?” I can never look past the anger and disappoint on her face. those eyes will never be my peace again, I'm damaged, we are damaged. What hurts me the most is that she never once said she trust me. "At least protect yourself.” How can I? Did you ever think what I felt when you put those handcuffs on me? or told me that I'm being arrested for a murder? I don’t think anyone would know me more than you in this state, and you didn’t bother to give me the benefit of the doubt. “Maybe I don’t even want anything anymore.” A tear escaped my eyes, I'm sure she couldn’t see it, I'm sure all she will see from now is a cold-blooded killer. “I don’t see any use of it.” “What are you saying? You’ll stay here forever? Your life will be over.” “It was over the second you put those handcuffs on me. everyone will soon know me as a murderer. It’s already over. I'm already a circus monkey, no one will care about the truth. Even without evidence, I'm a suspect.” “Oh, they already have strong evidence to put you behind bars.” “What?” I've never been close enough to a dead person in my life, the parched skin, the decay, it makes me choke on my own vomit. I try to close my eyes, but the click of her heels against the cold floor turns into a sound that I can remember as a part of that basement. Just the slightest reminder and my body is tensed, my eyebrows arched, my back aches. Her clicks stopped when she is beside me, sitting beside. “Remember when we had a full body check-up? You were told about the harmless mutation you had in your DNA.” I nodded not sure she saw it, she didn’t sound like she was waiting either. “Well, the criminal has the same mutation in his DNA. And they traced it back to you. you don’t just have the same mutation; you have the same DNA as the killer. Also, the murders started after you moved here. that was also a clue.” “But I haven’t done it. why would I kill anyone. What will I gain?” “Public needs someone to blame, you're just a scapegoat like Nick was. They don’t need the truth, you know that.” “And what do you think?” she tensed up to my question, even her breath hitched. And a long deafening silence followed. “Does it matter?” “Do you think I can do it?” all I want is to know what she thinks of me. “I've always believed that anyone and everyone is capable of murder. They just need the right circumstances, the right push.” “So, you think I've killed all those women. I've mauled and mutilated parts of their body for sheer pleasure, I've littered their body parts around the town as if they were trash while also working as a full-time cop. You believe I did that. maybe you never knew me afterall. Maybe what happened between us last night was a mistake for you.” I look in her eyes and she won't meet with mine. “Please go. I need to be alone.” She does as I ask. She stands up ready to leave. “Think about all the places you’ve been to in the past forty-eight hours. Make a list, remember the people who passed by you. You'll need to prove your alibi or you’ll be in the morning news and that’s only two hours away.” I can't believe she said that, I can't believe she believed that. maybe it was me, wrong all along about her feelings, about our connection, last night was a mistake, good thing we didn’t go all that way. We are actually nothing not even friends, nor partners. She was just enduring me, she was stuck with me. this is her way out and she is using it as anyone would.
