Prologue
The wind tore through Black Ridge Forest with a haunting howl, rattling the old trees until their branch scraped together like a chorus of vengeful spirits.
Snow covered the forest floor, pure and untouched…
…except for the trail of crimson that stained it.
Alexander staggered forward.
His boots sank deep into the snow with every step. His breathing came in ragged bursts, each inhale burning like shards of broken glass scraping down his throat.
One hand pressed against the deep gashes across his ribs.
Warm blood seeped between his fingers, staining the snow beneath him.
He lowered his head, forcing another step.
Then another.
His legs trembled violently, threatening to give out beneath him, but he tightened his hold around the bundle pressed against his chest instead.
“I'm not done yet”, he muttered through gritted teeth.
Wrapped inside a thick emerald-green velvet cloak was a tiny baby girl.
The expensive fabric was soaked with his blood, yet the golden embroidery stitched along its edges still shimmered beneath the pale moonlight.
A long howl echoed across the mountain ridge.
Alexander froze. His grip tightened around the bundle until his knuckles turned white.
“They're getting closer.”
The hunting pack had found his trail.
Their howls grew louder as they swept through the forest in perfect formation, following the scent of an injured Alpha.
"Just… a little further," he whispered.
His knees trembled. He pulled the child closer, pressing her safely against his chest.
"Hold on, my little starlight."
He stumbled into the snow.
A choked groan escaped his lips, but before his body hit the frozen ground, he twisted sharply, curling himself around the bundle in his arms.
His shoulder slammed against a hard rock. Pain exploded through his body. Still…
The child never touched the ground.
For several seconds, he lay there, gasping for air. His wolf whimpered inside him.
The mighty beast that had conquered countless battlefields now sounded weak… exhausted.
Alexander slowly pushed himself onto his knees. His arms shook violently. Every muscle screamed at him to stop.
Instead, he crawled towards the thick roots of an ancient oak tree.
Its massive trunk shielded them from the worst of the wind.
Leaning against the rough bark, he finally loosened his grip on the velvet cloak.
His trembling fingers unwrapped the fabric.
He held his breath.
Any second now… she would cry.
She didn't.
The baby lay peacefully in his lap, staring up at the moon with wide, curious eyes, her tiny chest rising and falling in slow, steady breaths.
Not a single cry escaped her lips.
The freezing wind danced across her tiny face, yet her pale skin remained untouched, as though winter itself refused to harm her.
“My brave little girl…” Alexander's lips trembled.
Another howl shattered the silence, much closer this time.
Snow shifted beneath distant paws. His heartbeat pounded.
If they reached him, they would find her.
His blood might mask her scent for now, but once they drew close enough, they would know exactly who she was.
And they would never let her live.
A warm tear rolled down Alexander’s cheek, freezing against his skin before they reached his jaw.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, gently brushing a thumb across her tiny cheek.
“So… so sorry.”
He closed his eyes.
Taking a deep, shaking breath, he reached deep within himself.
Past the pain.
Past the wounds.
Past the wolf that was slowly dying.
He found the ancient power buried inside every High Alpha.
Forbidden magic.
Magic fueled by life itself.
Alexander placed his bloodstained palm over the baby's tiny chest.
"By the blood of the First Pack…
His deep voice rolled through the silent forest.
“…and by the light of the unbroken moon."
The snow around him began to melt into perfect circles.
"I bind what is sacred."
Silver light flared from beneath his hand.
“I lock what is sovereign.”
The baby’s eyes suddenly glowed like liquid moonlight.
Silver lines spread beneath her skin, weaving through her tiny body like glowing rivers of stars.
Alexander threw his head back. A roar ripped from his throat.
His wolf cried out inside him as the spell tore through his very soul.
He felt his life slipping away… his Alpha essence burning itself into the seal.
“Hide her…” he commanded the shadows.
"Hide her from the wolves…”
The silver light pulsed brighter.
“Hide her from the throne.”
The glowing lines on her skin began to sink beneath her flesh. The sliver faded from her eyes… until only warm brown remained.
The air changed instantly. The overwhelming presence surrounding the child vanished.
Her scent changed.
Gone was the powerful aura that could command kingdoms. Now…
She smelled only of warm milk, soft blankets, and an ordinary human baby.
“It worked.” Alexander let out a shaky breath.
The silver light faded, leaving the forest in darkness once more.
The effort exhausted Alexander completely. He slumped against the tree, breathing shallowly.
With trembling hands, he wrapped the velvet cloak around her once more, carefully hiding the embroidered crest deep within the folds.
“You deserve a life…” His voice barely rose above the wind.
“…far away from all of this.”
With his last strength, Alexander dragged himself through the snow. Every movement left another streak of blood behind him.
Minutes later, the trees began to thin.
He emerged from the dense forest bordering the supernatural and human territory.
Beyond it stood a grand estate surrounded by iron gates.
The Hart Estate.
Alexander crawled to the entrance. Carefully, he placed the velvet bundle between the stone pillars.
He adjusted the cloak, pulling the fabric around her tiny face to shield her from the cold. Only her bright brown eyes remained visible.
Beside the gate hung a heavy brass emergency lever, connected directly to the mansion's main security team.
Alexander reached for it, his fingers slipped.
He tried again.
Finally, his hand closed around the freezing metal.
With one final burst of strength, he pulled it down.
Somewhere inside the estate, a silent alarm came to life.
Moments later, the mansion doors flew open.
Bright headlights cut through the darkness as an SUV sped toward the gate.
Alexander looked at the baby one last time.
His lips curled into the faintest smile.
"Live, Elena,” he whispered
His lips lingered against her skin for one heartbreaking moment before he pulled away.
"Live a normal life.”
His voice cracked.
“Be safe.”
He swallowed hard, tears blurring his vision.
“Be human."
He couldn’t stay.
If the humans found him covered in blood, panic would follow. They would call the police. Chaos would follow, putting the child in even greater danger.
Using the stone pillar for support, Alexander forced himself back into the shadows of Black Ridge Forest just as the SUV rolled to a stop outside the gates.
Hidden beneath the trees, he watched.
The driver's door opened.
A tall man wearing a long cashmere coat stepped into the snow, followed closely by two armed guards.
"What triggered the alarm?" Richard Hart asked, scanning the empty road.
"Is someone out there?" one of the guards called.
He approached the gate, shining his flashlight.
The beam swept across the snow.
Then stopped.
"Sir…”
His voice caught.
He lowered his weapon.
“There's… there's a baby."
Richard’s eyes widened.
Without another word, he hurried towards the gate and carefully lifted the velvet bundle into his arms.
As he pulled back the cloak, the security lights flickered on, bathing the baby's tiny face in warm golden light.
The baby lifted her face to Richard, her eyes enormous and unnervingly calm in the pale wash of the headlights.
She did not cry.
Instead, she slipped one tiny hand out from beneath the velvet cloak and curled her fingers around the lapel of his cashmere coat.
Richard went still.
His gaze dropped to the little hand clutching his coat.
For a long moment, he simply stared at her.
Then he slowly lifted his head and searched the dark tree line beyond the gates.
“Is someone there?” he called.
The wind rushed through the trees, carrying nothing back but its lonely howl.
After a long silence, Richard lowered his eyes to the baby again. He gently pulled the velvet cloak around her, shielding her from the biting cold before tucking her closer against his chest.
“Call the house,” he said quietly.
One of the guards hurried toward the SUV.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Tell Catherine to prepare the nursery.”
He adjusted the baby in his arms, careful not to disturb her.
Tiny. Fragile.
Yet she held on to his coat with surprising determination, her little fingers refusing to let go.
A faint smile softened his face.
“We’re bringing our daughter home.”
Hidden beneath the shadows of Black Ridge Forest, Alexander closed his eyes.
A shaky breath slipped past his lips as the SUV turned and disappeared through the falling snow, its headlights fading into the distance.
She was safe.
That was all he had ever wanted.
