Chapter 2

The private elevator glided silently up the core of the Hart Tower, a monolith of black glass and brushed steel piercing the sky. Inside the plush, leather-lined cab, Elena checked her reflection in the smoked-glass mirror one last time. The cream power suit was immaculate. Her matte complexion was flawless. She looked exactly like what she was. When the doors slid open to the 50th-floor executive suite, the atmosphere shifted to one of quiet, absolute authority. Clerks and junior executives moved through the hallways, their voices muted, their footsteps absorbed by thick, custom-woven silk runners. Elena stepped out, her heels striking the marble edges with a rhythmic, sharp snap. “Good morning, Miss Hart,” her administrative assistant, Marcus, said quickly, stepping into stride beside her with an iPad held out. “The legal team has finalized the non-disclosure agreements for Silvermoon Global. The compliance officers are waiting in boardroom A, and your father is currently on a video call with Elysian Heights.” “Tell compliance to hold,” Elena instructed, her tone calm and precise. “Send me a complete briefing on Silvermoon Global’s asset distribution within ten minutes. Has Selene arrived?” “Right behind you, gorgeous.” Elena turned to see Selene Sinclair leaning against the marble archway of the private executive lounge. If Elena was the cold, structured architecture of the Hart Group, Selene was the dazzling, blinding light that illuminated it. “Tell me you brought the premium espresso,” Selene said, walking into the lounge and dropping her bag onto the marble-topped island with a satisfying thud. “Marcus is already bringing it,” Elena smiled, the rigid corporate mask melting away completely in her best friend's presence. “You look like you're about to walk a runway, not a merger meeting.” “Darling, the boardroom is my runway,” Selene countered, pulling two tablet devices from her bag. She stepped closer, her sharp eyes quickly examining Elena’s face. “Stop fixating on the numbers. Look at me. You’re stunning, but that nervous twitch in your eyes reveals otherwise. Elena paused, her hand freezing over her tablet. “What twitch?” “The spaced-out thing,” Selene said. “You’ve been doing it all week. Are you sure you're okay? If you're coming down with something, I can handle the Silvermoon presentation myself.” “I’m fine, Selene,” Elena gently reassured. “It’s just fatigue. This merger is the most significant move our family has undertaken in the last decade. I can't afford to miss a day.” Selene observed her for a moment longer, her instincts tingling, but she accepted the deflection. She handed Elena a tablet, the screen illuminating with Silvermoon Global's sleek, dark-silver logo. "Fine, but as soon as this meeting ends, I’m taking you to a spa,” Selene said, turning her attention to the data. “Let’s discuss the monster we’re dealing with today. Silvermoon Global. They emerged suddenly five years ago, acquiring shipping companies, heavy industry, and private security firms across northern Elarion. “And their executive team is a total mystery,” Selene added, tapping her tablet to bring up a blurry paparazzi photo taken at an event. “No social media, no public profiles, no high-society gossip. The CEO, Karl Ashford, is treated like some reclusive god. The financial press calls him the Apex Predator of Wall Street. They say he’s never lost a negotiation, because he literally terrifies his opponents into submission.” “He doesn't scare me,” Elena said, her voice turning firm and steady, prompting Selene to raise an approving eyebrow. "The Hart Group has the necessary infrastructure to enter the country market. If Karl wants our shipping lines, he must follow our rules.” “That’s my girl,” Selene smirked, taking a fresh cup of espresso from Marcus as he entered the room. She took a sip, her rings clicking against the porcelain. “Ray’s father tried to corner me in the lobby, by the way. He’s panicked because he knows if this Silvermoon deal goes through, his real estate firm becomes completely irrelevant to your family’s portfolio.” Elena sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose. “Ray called me six times this morning. I didn't answer.” “Good. He’s a boy, El. You need a man who can match your gravity. Someone who looks at you and doesn't get intimidated by the fact that you can buy and sell him ten times over.” Before Elena could respond, a sudden, sharp pain flared behind her eyes. The quiet of the executive suite was violently shattered. To Elena’s horror, her ears suddenly filled with a deafening noise. She could hear the high-pitched hum of the fluorescent lights inside the ceiling panels three rooms over. She could hear the distinct, rhythmic thump-thump-thump of a copy machine typing on the 48th floor. And worse, she could smell the heavy, bitter aroma of Selene's espresso with such overwhelming intensity that it felt like the coffee bean dust was coating the back of her throat. Elena gasped, dropping her tablet onto the marble island. She firmly gripped the edge of the counter, her knuckles turning white as she fought the sudden wave of vertigo. “Elena!” Selene set her cup down so hard that the espresso splashed over the rim. In a flash, she was at Elena’s side, her hands gripping Elena’s shoulders. “Elena, look at me. Breathe. What is happening?” Elena closed her eyes tightly, trying to block out the overwhelming sensory assault. “It’s too loud,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Everything is too loud, Selene. Selene didn't hesitate. She turned to the door. “Marcus! Clear the hallway. Turn off the executive lounge audio feeds, now!” Within seconds, the suite's ambient noise faded as Marcus hurried to obey. Elena leaned against Selene’s shoulder, inhaling her friend's familiar scent. Gradually, the overwhelming sounds diminished, settling into the usual dull hum of an Aurelia city's morning. Elena opened her eyes, her breath catching as she gazed at her reflection in the polished marble counter. For an instant, she nearly believed her dark brown irises weren't brown. “That’s it,” Selene said, her voice trembling with rare panic as she rubbed Elena's back. “We’re calling a doctor. This isn't stress, El. You’re experiencing some neurological episode.” “No,” Elena replied, forcing herself upright and adjusting her blazer with shaky fingers. She looked at Selene with fierce determination. “The Silvermoon helicopter just cleared downtown airspace, Selene. They’ll be in our lobby in fifteen minutes. I won’t cancel this meeting.” Selene stared, torn between maternal concern and her unwavering loyalty to Elena's ambitions. She saw the fierce resolve in her friend's eyes, the pride of a woman who would not show weakness. Slowly, Selene reached out, gently wiping a tiny smudge of lipstick from Elena's lip, her expression hardening into a defiant mask. “Fine,” Selene whispered. “We proceed with the meeting. We close the deal. But the moment the meeting is over, we’re figuring out what’s wrong with you.” Elena nodded, taking a deep, steadying breath. She grabbed her tablet, her hands now firm. Together, they strode out of the lounge, their steps echoing down the marble corridor toward the grand boardroom.
