Braided: A collection of true stories about overcoming grief and loss.
Dedication
For Those I Carry
This book is dedicated to the people whose lives became the strands of my own.
To my mother, Cynthia, whose unconditional love became the foundation I still stand on.
To, Kelly, whose bright spirit taught me how precious and fragile life truly is.
To my pappy, Wayne, whose quiet strength and unwavering love shaped the person I continue to become.
To my Uncle Terry, whose generous heart and gentle kindness reminded everyone around him that love is most often shown through the smallest acts.
To my precious nephew, Tre, whose life lasted only hours, yet whose impact will be felt for generations.
To my granny, Janice, whose love remained even as dementia slowly stole her memories.
To my stepdad, Mark, who proved that family is not defined by blood but by the choice to love, to stay, and to give your heart completely.
And to every soul whose story is woven into these pages but whose name is known only to God.
Most of all, this book is dedicated to you-the reader. If you picked up this book carrying grief, longing for someone you love, searching for hope, or wondering whether your heart will ever feel whole again, I want you to know that you are not walking this road alone.
May these pages remind you that love never truly leaves us. It simply changes the way it lives within us. We are all made of many strands.
These are mine.
A Letter to My Reader
Dear Friend,
If this book has found its way into your hands, I don't believe it's by accident. Maybe you've just lost someone you love. Maybe your grief is years old but still feels as fresh as yesterday. Maybe you're caring for someone whose memories are slowly fading. Or maybe you're simply searching for hope after life has unraveled in ways you never expected. Whatever brought you here, I'm grateful you're here.
For a long time, I thought grief was something to survive. I believed that if I could just be strong enough, pray hard enough, or wait long enough, one day it would finally disappear. It didn't.
Instead, I discovered something unexpected. Grief became part of the braid of my life. Each person I loved left a strand behind. Some strands are woven from joy, others from heartbreak. Some are bright with laughter, while others are stained with tears. Alone, they seem incomplete. Together, they tell the story of who I have become.
This book isn't simply about death. It's about love that refuses to end. It's about family, faith, resilience, and the remarkable ways broken hearts continue beating after unimaginable loss.
There were moments while writing these pages when I cried. There were moments when I smiled through tears as forgotten memories returned. There were even moments when I laughed out loud because the people I love still have a way of filling my heart with joy. I chose not to hide those moments from you because healing isn't found in pretending we're okay. Healing begins when we're willing to tell the truth about what we've lived through.
My hope is that somewhere in these pages you'll recognize pieces of your own story. Perhaps you'll remember someone whose voice you still hear, and you'll finally give yourself permission to grieve. Perhaps you'll discover that love is stronger than goodbye.
If that happens, then every difficult word I wrote will have been worth it. Thank you for trusting me with your heart.
Now, take a deep breath.
Let's begin weaving the braid together.
With love,
Cher'I Nicole Hendry-Valverde
Disclaimer
The stories shared in this book are true and are told from my personal memories, experiences, and perspective. Some names, identifying details, and timelines have been changed or condensed to protect the privacy of individuals while preserving the truth and emotional integrity of the events described.
This book is not intended to provide medical, psychological, legal, or professional advice. It is a personal memoir and a companion for reflection, healing, and hope. Every person's journey through grief is unique, and there is no single path toward healing.
The journal prompts and reflections throughout this book are offered as invitations-not expectations. Take what speaks to your heart, leave what does not, and move through these pages at your own pace.
If you are walking through profound grief or emotional distress, I encourage you to seek support from trusted loved ones, your faith community, or a qualified mental health professional.
My deepest hope is that these pages remind you of one simple truth: Love is never wasted. And neither is the life of the person you carry in your heart.
Why Braided?
I've often wondered how one heart can hold so much. So much love, and so much joy. So much heartbreak, and so many goodbyes.
For years, I thought each loss stood alone-one tragedy separated from the next. Kelly. My pappy. My Uncle Terry. My nephew, Tre. My mother. My grandmother. My stepdad.
But as I began looking back over my life, I realized something beautiful. None of those stories stand alone. They are woven together. Like a braid.
A braid isn't made from a single strand. It takes many. Each strand has its own color, its own texture, its own strength. On its own, one strand tells only part of the story. Woven together, they become something stronger, more beautiful, and more resilient than they could ever be apart. My life has been braided by love.
Every person I have lost left a strand woven into who I am. Their laughter still echoes in mine. Their lessons shape my decisions. Their kindness influences the way I love others. Even their absence has become part of the person I am still becoming.
There are darker strands too. The questions without answers. The hospital rooms, and the funeral services. The empty chairs at family gatherings. The birthdays and holidays that will never feel quite the same.
For a long time, I wished I could pull those dark strands out. Now I understand that if I did, I would also unravel the woman those experiences helped shape. Grief and love have never been enemies. They have always belonged to the same braid.
This book is the story of those strands. It is about the people who shaped my heart, the losses that changed my life, the faith that carried me when I could no longer carry myself, and the hope that slowly emerged from unimaginable sorrow.
As you read, I invite you to think about your own braid.
Who are the people woven into your story? What moments have shaped the person you are today? What strands of joy, sorrow, resilience, and grace have become part of you?
Perhaps, by the final page, you'll discover what I have come to believe: Our lives are not defined by the moments that break us. They are defined by the love that continues to hold every strand together.
