"You've marked her, haven't you?" mother tilts her head, whispering into my ear as Olivia walks into the pack house.
"I have," I say, my eyes fixed on Olivia as Mariah guides her to a seat in the crowd.
Mother smiles, "She's beautiful. I hope this isn't another mistake."
"Me too."
Music begins to play and people stand up to dance to it, others coming over to my table to offer their wishes and gifts. Apart from celebrating victory after succeeding in a battle, today is the only other day people in this pack get a day off to celebrate.
Michael stands up from his seat and holds his hand out to Olivia. She smiles, taking it and he leads her to the dance floor. He slides his hand around her waist and pulls her close to him, moving with her to the sound of the music.
"Will you just sit here and watch your best friend dance with the luna like that?" Mother asks.
I clear my throat, "We're under attack."
"You didn't tell them about your human mate?" She asks, worry in her voice.
"I'll take care of it," I say, asking Michael to take Olivia somewhere safe through mind link.
She follows as he leads her off the dance floor, oblivious to what's going on.
"How will you take care of it?" she asks, "this pack is the reason our species almost went extinct and you're the one who suggested none of the neighbouring packs bring humans into their packs."
"The case here is different, Mother. I couldn't not bring her into the pack."
"Well, maybe you should have just given up your position to your beta. It would have been way better than inviting a battle upon ourselves," she says, angry.
"I'll take care of it, okay?" I ask, leaving the pack to find the invaders.
I follow her scent until I catch up with alpha's from other packs who are trying to get to her.
"We have to find her and kill her," one of them says and they all agree, running towards the scent.
"Hear me out!" I yell and they stop, facing me.
"What do you have to say?" one of them asks. "You've betrayed us all. You proposed the rule that forbids human entrance into any of the packs and you went against it? The least you could have done was to stick to it and serve as an example to the rest of us."
I sigh, remembering the day all the packs put their differences aside to fight against humans. Our pack alone was too weak to fight at that time so I asked for help from neighbouring packs and when we emerged victorious, I proposed we all cut human interaction within the pack.
"She's my mate," I manage to say.
"But she's human, you could have rejected her." An alpha I assume is new to the position in one of the packs says.
"I had no other option but to claim her. Had I not done so, I'd have lost my position."
"We have to kill her regardless. Let's hope the moon goddess will be kind enough to give you another mate," Another alpha says and they all laugh. "Let's find her!"
I growl and lunge forward, punching one of them in the face.
I know it's a mistake but I do it to shift their attention from finding Olivia, to fighting me.
The alphas begin to shift into their wolves one by one and I scream in pain as I let my own beast take over.
One of the wolves jumps onto my back sending me to the ground and pins me there, the other wolves joining in on punching and scratching me.
I want to summon my subordinates but this is a battle of Alphas so I get up with so much force, and send the wolves onto their backs. When I manage to take down three wolves, the last one growls pleadingly when I'm about to lunge forward to it. I stop, my fist mid+air, realizing that Olivia has been watching me throughout from behind a small shrub nearby.
There's no point running away so fall to the ground and shift.
