CHAPTER 6: THROUGH THE NIGHT

386 Words
As the team reached the extraction point, their breaths came in ragged gasps, and the weight of the mission’s intensity began to settle in. The facility's alarms blared, adding a dissonant backdrop to their hurried escape. The extraction team, a pair of armored operatives, were already on the ground, weapons ready and scanning for threats. "Hurry up!" one of them shouted as Alex, Sarah, Marcus, and Mia sprinted toward the waiting transport. Sarah, glancing over her shoulder, kept a vigilant watch on the facility. "We’re not out of the woods yet. They’ll be sending reinforcements." Alex nodded, his eyes sharp. "We need to move. Marcus, how are you holding up?" Marcus, still catching his breath, gave a curt nod. "I’m fine. Just get us out of here." The transport’s engines roared to life as the team piled in, but the facility’s outer perimeter was still under heavy assault. A series of explosions rocked the entrance, and enemy fire began to rain down on their position. The transport began its ascent, but the sudden influx of enemy fire caused it to shudder violently. Alex grabbed the controls of a mounted turret inside the transport and started returning fire, his focus intense. “Hold on!” one of the extraction operatives warned as the transport veered sharply to avoid incoming missiles. Mia, catching her breath, worked to stabilize the communication links, coordinating with the extraction team. “I’m rerouting the signals. We need a clear path out of here.” With every ounce of their remaining strength, the team fought back against the barrage. The transport dodged and weaved through the chaos, pushing towards the safety of the night sky. Just as they cleared the immediate danger, the facility’s alarms dimmed behind them, replaced by the distant, faint glow of fires and smoke. Alex let out a slow, steady breath, glancing at his team. “We did it,” he said quietly. Mia looked at the others, a weary smile on her face. “For now, at least.” As the transport flew into the night, the team’s exhaustion was palpable, but so was their relief. They had thwarted a global catastrophe and lived to tell the tale. The mission had been a success, but the real test would be what awaited them when they returned to base.
