Chapter 26: The Weight of Secrets

1188 Words
Adrian’s days at university continued to be a mix of the ordinary and the extraordinary. Every morning, he rose early to make the trek to his small, rundown apartment, gathering bottles along the way to earn a few cents. By evening, he would return, worn out and exhausted, but still determined to keep up his studies. Life at school remained just as difficult. The wealthy students, especially Victor, made sure to remind him of his place every chance they got. But there was something different now, something hanging in the air around Adrian. The inheritance—though he tried to dismiss it—lingered at the back of his mind. The letter. The mysterious man. His real parents. It all felt like a dream he couldn’t wake up from. Days passed, and Adrian tried to ignore the whispers inside his head, telling him to seek answers. It was the old man who finally broke the silence. One evening, as Adrian returned to his apartment, the old man was waiting for him, his face grim. “Adrian, there’s something you need to know about your inheritance,” the old man began, his voice low, as if afraid of being heard. “It’s not just money. It’s power. It’s a legacy.” Adrian frowned, sitting down across from him. “What do you mean?” The old man sighed, looking away for a moment. “Your parents… they were part of something bigger. They were involved in an underground network, a world you don’t even know exists. That inheritance? It’s not just a fortune. It’s a key. A key to something much darker.” Adrian’s heart raced. This was getting out of hand. He had come to university to escape his past, not to be dragged back into a world of shadows and secrets. “What are you saying?” Adrian asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’m saying,” the old man continued, “that your family is connected to a group that controls more than just businesses. They control entire cities, industries, and people’s fates. The inheritance is your link to that power.” Adrian stood up, his hands trembling. “No. I’m not part of that world. I don’t want to be.” But the old man’s gaze remained steady. “You don’t have a choice, Adrian. That power has always been yours, even if you didn’t know it. It’s only a matter of time before it catches up with you.” The conversation weighed heavily on Adrian’s mind that night. He couldn’t sleep. He tossed and turned, the words of the old man echoing in his head. What was he supposed to do now? He had always fought to remain anonymous, to keep his head down. But now, it seemed the world had other plans for him. The next day, while walking to class, Adrian couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching him. It wasn’t just a feeling; it was the unmistakable sensation of eyes on the back of his neck. He glanced over his shoulder and caught a glimpse of a man in a dark suit standing across the street, his face obscured by sunglasses. Adrian’s heart skipped a beat. He quickly turned a corner and ducked into a small alleyway, his mind racing. Who was that? What did they want? Later that day, as Adrian sat in his economics class, trying to focus, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw a message from Emily. “I’ve been hearing things. Someone’s looking for you. Be careful, Adrian. They’re not just after your money.” Adrian’s stomach churned. It was like the walls were closing in on him. He had to get out of this, but how? Emily didn’t know the half of it. She had no idea what Adrian had inherited, nor did she know the true extent of the dangers he was facing. As he left class, his thoughts were interrupted by the familiar taunting voice of Victor. “Where are you going, poor boy?” Victor sneered, his entourage of friends following him closely. Adrian clenched his fists, resisting the urge to snap back. “None of your business,” he muttered, pushing past them. But Victor wasn’t done. “You think you’re going to make it here, in this world? You don’t belong. You’re just a charity case,” Victor called after him, his laughter echoing in the hallway. Adrian didn’t respond. He just kept walking. When he reached his apartment, he collapsed onto the couch, his body weary from the long day. That’s when he saw it—an envelope, lying on the small table in the corner of the room. He hadn’t noticed it before. It was thick, heavy, and sealed with a wax stamp. He opened it cautiously, pulling out a letter with elegant handwriting. The letter was short, but its words felt like a punch to the gut. “Your inheritance awaits. There are others who want it, Adrian. People who will stop at nothing to take it from you. Protect yourself. The family knows you’re here. And they will come for you.” Adrian’s pulse quickened. This wasn’t just some scam. Someone was after him, and they knew about his inheritance. He didn’t know what to do. His ordinary life was over. His future had already been decided, even if he didn’t want it. As if on cue, there was a knock at the door. Adrian hesitated before opening it. Standing there was a young woman, her expression serious. She had a familiar face, but Adrian couldn’t place her. She wore a long coat, and her eyes seemed to pierce through him. “I’m here to help,” she said quietly. “You don’t have much time. They’re coming for you. We need to move fast.” Adrian stared at her, confusion and fear mixing in his chest. “Who are you?” “I’m someone who knows your family,” she replied. “And I know the world you’re about to enter. It’s dangerous. You can’t face it alone.” Before Adrian could respond, the woman reached into her bag and handed him a small, metallic device. “This is a key to an underground network. It will lead you to people who can help. But you have to trust me.” Adrian’s mind raced. A key? An underground network? He had no idea what this meant, but he knew one thing for sure: his life had just been turned upside down. As he took the device from her, the woman stepped back. “Time’s running out,” she said, before disappearing into the shadows. Adrian stood there for a moment, unsure of what to do next. The letter. The woman. The inheritance. Everything was happening so fast. But there was no turning back now. The world he had tried to avoid was pulling him in, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. With a deep breath, Adrian stepped out of his apartment and into a world that no longer felt like his own. ---
