CHAPTER ONE
ELARA POV As I walked down the dark and empty road, my son held my hand tightly. Inquisitively he asked, "Mom, do you think dad is coming to get us?" I knew in my heart that he was not coming, as we were getting a divorce the following day. But I did not want to give my son false hope, so I replied, "No, I don't think so." Even though I knew he would be disappointed, it was better for him to feel that way than to be let down by his father's true colors. I looked down at my son, and as I saw the pain flashing through his eyes, it cut right into my heart. I got down on one knee and promised to explain everything to him when we got home. Holding his hand tightly, we began to cross the road when suddenly I saw headlights flashing towards us, and a car speeding towards us. In a desperate attempt to save my son, I picked him up in my arms and held him close to my chest, turning my back towards the incoming car. I was hit but couldn't feel anything, all I could do was pray for my son's safety. As I rolled over the hood of the car, my son slipped out of my arms, and I stretched out my hand to try and hold onto his. Tears streamed down my face as I saw the fear in his eyes, not because of the pain that I was supposed to feel, but because I hadn't been able to save him. I couldn't feel anything except the fear. As my body slammed into the windshield of the car, the powerful impact shattered the glass and sent shards flying, cutting into both me and my son. My son hit the roof of the car and fell to the side of the road, hitting his head on the pavement. I landed two feet away from him, dazed and in pain. As I struggled to focus my thoughts, I felt my vision darken and a wave of dizziness threatened to overwhelm me. Blood spurted from my throat, causing me to nearly lose consciousness. But the thought of losing my son gave me the strength to push through the pain, swallowing down the blood and clearing my head. I looked over at my son and saw the pool of blood beneath his head, as well as the cuts and injuries on his body and face. I knew immediately that he was seriously injured and in danger of dying. Time was of the essence - we needed to get to the hospital right away if we were going to save his life. I mustered all my strength to crawl towards my son. As I reached out with my seriously injured hand, a car screeched to a stop. I glanced over and saw a man approaching us. He exuded malice as he drew closer and lowered himself to my level. With an evil grin, he looked at my son and sneered, "You could have avoided all this by signing the documents for the company and the divorce papers. Now, you have offended them by taking the case to court. Don't worry, I'll enjoy killing you both. But first, I'll make you watch as I kill your son with relish. Then, I'll end you." Struggling to move, I put all my energy into crawling towards my son. Despite my serious injury, I reached out to him with a trembling hand. Suddenly, a screech of brakes halted a car near us. As I glanced up, I saw a man striding toward us, emanating pure malice. He crouched down, and his evil gaze darted between my son and me. "You could have avoided all this trouble, you know," he said, his voice dripping with venom. "All you had to do was sign the company documents and the divorce papers. But no, you had to take it to court, and now you've offended them. Rest assured, I'll enjoy killing both of you, starting with your son for my amusement." As my heart pounded in fear, I realized we were in grave danger. The man's words left me trembling with terror. What could I do to protect my son and myself? I closed my eyes and prayed for a miracle, a way out of this nightmare. I took a deep, labored breath and pleaded with the killer to save my son and kill me instead. The killer merely laughed and replied, "No, not yet. I haven't even started having fun yet." He then pulled out a sharp, short blade from the back of his boot and ran his index finger along the edge of it, causing a single bead of blood to appear. His eyes glinted with evil as he licked the droplet of blood off his finger and advanced towards my son, the knife still in his hand. In a last attempt to protect him, I lunged forward and grasped the blade in my hands before it could pierce my son's skin. Blood sipped it of the fresh cut. The killer laughed as he applied pressure on the blade, ready to drive it into my son's heart. I begged him not to kill my son, but to take me instead. The killer shook his head and replied, "You still don't understand, do you? This boy isn't his son. I know what happened." He proceeded to explain how my husband had devised a devious plan with another woman to make me believe that he was unable to get me pregnant naturally. They had made arrangements with a doctor to use a sperm donor, an unattractive one at that, and then lied to me that it was from my husband. Unfortunately, they made a mistake and inserted me with the wrong donor. I was in shock. The amount of information I had just received was overwhelming, but I didn't want to focus on it right now, despite the pain of discovering the truth at the brink of death. I wasn't prepared to give up yet. Despite my numerous injuries, I clung onto the blade of the knife, even though my energy was rapidly fading. As I felt my consciousness slipping away, my desperate plea to God for salvation echoed in my mind, hoping for someone, anyone, to come to our rescue - perhaps even my son. In that dire moment, a sudden gunshot pierced the air, followed by the urgent sound of approaching footsteps. Startled by the unexpected disruption, the killer spit out series of cusses from his mouth, released his grip on the knife and hastily fled towards his waiting car. Before entering his car, he gave me one last look and With a swift motion, he ignited the engine and swiftly drove away, leaving behind the scene of terror. Relief washed over me as the threat dissipated, and I was left to gather my shattered nerves and process the harrowing events that had just unfolded. I breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that the killer was finally gone. Releasing the knife from my grip, I tightly held my son's hand, whispering softly to him, "Mommy is here, I won't leave you." As I closed my eyes, the aftermath of the accident started to overwhelm me. The excruciating pain and agony became unbearable, causing me to moan in anguish, blood trickling from my mouth. The pain was unbearable and I could feel my life slipping away. Tears streaming down my face, I wondered what my son would be going through in that moment. Clutching a prayer in my heart, I heard the footsteps fading away. Desperately pleading for help, I whispered out softly,"Please don't go, save my son." But the steps abruptly stopped, before fading away into nothingness. All I could do was hope for a miracle, and cling to the last threads of breathe in me. With determination, I pried my eyes open and gazed upwards, yearning for divine intervention. Tears mingled with blood as I whispered, my voice trembling, "I implore, anyone please rescue my son." At that very moment, a radiant light erupted from my chest, where my cherished Jade pendant rested, and it enfolded us in its luminous embrace. The brilliance offered hope and solace, a glimmer of salvation amidst the darkness that had engulfed us. As I shut my eyes to acclimate to the sudden burst of light, I cautiously uncovered them, only to find the radiance had vanished. A noise, albeit faint, reached my ears, prompting me to turn my head and strain my eyes to discern what lay ahead on the road. Swiftly, a speeding car emerged into view. A sensation of warmth flooded through me, accompanied by a sharp, agonizing wave of pain in my chest. It felt as though an immense weight bore down upon me, threatening to halt the rhythm of my heart. In an instant, my consciousness slipped away, and I succumbed to darkness.
