CHAPTER 45 ANGELA We had finished eating by the time we left the restaurant. The night air was cooler than I expected. We walked slowly along the quiet sidewalk, side by side. For a while, neither of us spoke. I could still feel the warmth of his hand around mine from earlier. I glanced at him. He was looking straight ahead, his hands tucked into his pockets. “Damian.” He turned toward me. “Hmm?” I stopped walking. He stopped too. For a moment, I simply looked at him. My heart was beating so hard that I wondered if he could hear it. Then I took a breath. “You asked me something before.” His expression changed immediately. “I did.” “About us.” He nodded. “I remember.” I looked down briefly before meeting his eyes again. “I've thought about it.” He didn't say anything. He just waited. That somehow made it harder. “You asked me to be your girlfriend.” His eyes remained fixed on mine. “Yes.” I swallowed. “Ask me again.” He stared at me. “What?” “Ask me again.” A slow smile appeared on his face. “You're sure?” I nodded. “I have an answer this time.” He stepped closer. Close enough that I could feel his presence surrounding me. “Angela…” His voice was softer now. “Will you be my girlfriend?” I looked into his eyes. This time, I didn't run from the question. “Yes.” His smile disappeared for a second, replaced by something deeper. Relief. Happiness. Then he reached for my hand. “You mean it?” “Yes.” He intertwined his fingers with mine. “Then you're mine.” I smiled. “Don't get too possessive.” “Too late.” I laughed. He pulled me gently closer. “I'm not letting you change your mind.” “I don't plan to.” His eyes searched mine. “Good.” Then he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against my forehead. It was simple. Tender. But somehow it made my heart race more than I expected. I rested my head briefly against his chest. His arms wrapped around me. For a few seconds, the world disappeared. There was no fear. No threats. No questions. Just his heartbeat beneath my ear. And for the first time in a long time, I felt safe. I didn't tell him the whole truth. I didn't tell him that part of my decision came from needing someone powerful enough to protect me. I couldn't. Not tonight. Tonight, I wanted to believe that my answer was only about him. Damian gently lifted my chin. “Look at me.” I did. His eyes softened. “I've wanted to hear that for a long time.” I smiled. “And now you have.” He brushed his thumb across my cheek. “And now I have.” Then he leaned closer. My breath caught. His lips hovered just above mine. Neither of us moved. Then his phone suddenly rang. We both froze. Damian closed his eyes and sighed. I laughed. “Answer it.” He looked annoyed. “I don't want to.” “Maybe it's important.” He pulled out his phone and glanced at the screen. His expression changed. “What is it?” He stared at the caller's name for another second. Then he answered. “Hello?” I watched his face. Something was wrong. Very wrong. “Where are you?” he asked. There was a pause. Then Damian's eyes lifted to mine. “We need to talk.” His voice had suddenly become cold. And I knew whatever this was... Our perfect night was over.
