Chapter 1
Elaine walked into the Hellman office with her head held high and her chest sticking out. She was there for a purpose and no-one would stop her. Getting a job with the Hellmans had been a dream come true and after struggling for six months with no qualifications, she was glad that something had panned out. On a stroke of luck, Charlie had convinced her to try and apply there just in case they decided they could hire her without a background check. Five days later, she had gotten a call that she got the job and would start the Monday of the following week. It had come as a shock because deep down she had thought that if anyone was going to figure out who she was, it would have been one of the Hellman boys. The company was a premier security firm that was started by Maud Hellman a former army general who wanted to improve local security in the United States. The company had become so successful, the government had given it several contracts overseas. She had done enough research to know they were well trained and able to uncover her past, but she was hoping that they wouldn't and that working for them would give her a sense of stability that she hadn't felt in so many years. She walked over to the receptionist; a short blonde with a bob and a cheerful smile. "Hi, I'm Michelle,” she said referring to the fake name she had been given when she arrived in the States “I was supposed to begin working today." "Oh yes," the woman replied flashing her a look of recognition, "You're Alex's new assistant." Elaine assumed she was talking about Alexander the CEO and the eldest of the Hellman children. "Yes." She replied looking around the lobby. . The Hellman headquarters was an impressive building sitting in one of the less commercialized parts of the city. On the outside it was massive, looming and intimidating; she imagined that the Hellman children would reflect these qualities. On the inside things were a bit more welcoming but it still maintained a sterile feel. "Alright, well he's out of his office right now and he's asked me to show you to yours and give you a run-down of what you will be doing. My name is Jessica by the way." Elaine nodded and smiled feeling a bit relieved that she wasn't meeting Alexander just yet. It seemed that they hadn't figured out her secret; which was a good thing. She followed Jessica down a hallway past several offices until she came to one that had Alexander's nameplate on it. "This is Alex's office," Jessie said leading her into the room. Elaine looked around and noted how masculine the room was. The desk was large and imposing and she knew from pictures she had seen online that the man who sat behind it was just as large and imposing. She followed Jessica around the large office whose only other features besides the massive desk and chair for Alexander was a pair of chairs and a shelf filled with books whose spines were creased showing that they had been read often. The view outside his floor to ceiling windows was breath-taking and she noted that from there she could almost see her home. The thought that at some point he could be standing by his window and looking down at where she lived didn't sit so well with her. Jessica led her out of the room to the office next to it. "This," she said pointing to the nameplate on the door, "will be your office." When Jessica opened the door, Elaine gasped; inside was an office so big it was almost the size of Alexander's. "Are you sure?" Elaine asked looking at Jessica skeptically. "Oh yes, as the assistant to the CEO you have a big job, so you need a big office." Jessica said. Elaine stepped into the office and looked around. There was a smaller desk than the one in Alexander's office, but the room was filled with more furniture. By the door, she saw a desk filled with papers and beside it was a coat hanger. There was a plush couch at the back of the room and in the corner beside it was a small rack that looked as if it was built to hang clothes. There were chairs of different styles all around the room but what caught Elaine's eyes was the view from her window. It was identical to Alexander's. "This was Jackie's office. She left two weeks ago on retirement. She had been with the company for thirty-five years." Jessica said with a look of admiration on her face. "Wow," Elaine whispered. "They're big shoes to fill but you'll get it." Jessica replied, "I left some forms on the table that you'll need to fill out so I can take them down to HR." "Ok," Elaine replied. She walked over to the main desk that sat in the middle of the large office and looked around. "I have a feeling you're really going to fit in here," Jessica said before she walked out. Elaine slouched down in her chair and said a little prayer hoping that Jessica was right. She was going to have to do a lot here as Alexander’s secretary, but she felt lucky that she had the chance to do something with her life. After spending so many years cut off from everything, she was eager to be able to live a normal life. Elaine sat down and looked at the form she had been told to fill out for HR. She completed it carefully ensuring she had everything in order. The last thing she wanted was to be investigated by the best investigators in California. ***** Alexander slammed his hand on this desk as his anger got the best of him. "I told you to take care of the situation, Dillon!" He shouted into his phone "so why is Leonard Jr. running all around Europe with Uranium." Alexander waited for his lieutenant to reply but when he didn't he knew that he had to go in. "You need to meet me at the office in the next hour," Alexander said before cutting the call. Five minutes later he was walking out the front door towards his garage. He hadn’t planned on going into the office today especially with his new assistant undergoing training and he wanted to be in the field with his family. Being the CEO was nothing like his father had made it seem. Instead of having control over his comings and goings, he was constantly being called to the office when things went wrong. Since he had taken up the position, his life and been moving from one meeting to the other in attempts to better structure the company that had been left in his care. He had always envisioned himself as the fearsome leader of the Hellman group since he was a child but now he wondered if it was worth it. He walked into his building at midday and there was something different about the way the receptionist was looking at him. "Did you hide something in my office?" He asked looking at her skeptically. "You could say that." She replied flashing him a sneaky wink. "I swear you have no idea what it means to work in an office," he said walking away from her towards his office. To his annoyance, she followed him. "Do you need something?" He asked. "Nope." She replied shaking her head. He turned and once again she began following. Deciding to ignore her, he made his way to his office. For the second time since he stepped off the elevator, he couldn't help thinking something was a bit out of order. He realized then that it must be his new assistant. He walked over to the adjoining door that connected their offices and opened it. He hadn’t been expecting what he saw next. On her hands and knees with her rear end sticking out, his assistant was eagerly looking for something beneath her desk. He admitted to himself that he had never seen Jackie in a position like that before. He took some time to observe the roundness of her ass and her well-toned legs before he cleared his throat. She jumped up as though she had totally forgotten where she was. Turning around on her knees she looked up at him and he was struck by the sheer beauty kneeling on the ground before him. She had thick long brown hair and bright blue eyes. Her thin nose perked up and he couldn't help noticing her full pink lips. He looked at her and cleared his throat knowing if he said anything just then his voice would betray him. “You’re my new assistant?” he asked after what felt like an eternity. “Oh yes,” she replied nervously, “I was just trying to find my pen that had slipped under the desk.” “I see.” He replied dryly. She smiled nervously and stood revealing long, well-toned legs and a thin frame. She stretched out a thin frail looking hand which he took and to his surprise, she gave a very firm handshake. “You must be Alexander.” She said flashing him a perfectly beautiful smile. “Yes, and you must be Michelle, my new assistant.” He said. “Yes, that’s me” she replied withdrawing her hand. “I thought you would be much older.” He said taking another look at her from head to toe. “Oh no, I’m sorry.” She said flashing him a look of disappointment “do you want me to leave?” “Oh no,” he said suddenly trying to wipe the look of disappointment from her face, “it’s fine. You’re my new assistant.” The look of relief on her face was instantaneous and he felt pleasure knowing he had contributed to it. “Is there anything I can do for you?” she asked looking up at him with those beautiful blue eyes. “Uh no.” he replied, “If you need any help you can come through this door or ask Jessica at the receptionist desk” “Alright, perfect” she replied, “I’ll keep that in mind. Right now, I just need to rearrange this office so it looks less cluttered.” “Oh, I can help with that.” He said excitedly now that he had found something better to do than to talk to Dillon. “Oh no.” she replied “I have all this together. In a few hours, this will be a brand-new office.” “Well, all the furniture you don’t want, you can put out in the hallway and call for the maintenance crew to come and get it, and if you need new things you can always give them a list.” “Oh, wonderful” she replied looking around the office as if she was trying to figure out exactly how she would be changing things. “I’ll leave you to it.” He said turning and going back into his office. Inside he saw Jessica boasting a smug smile. “I could have you fired for keeping that from me.” He said . “Keeping what from you?” she asked looking at him innocently. There weren’t many people who knew how far back he and Jessica went. They were friends since middle school when he was smaller and gangly and the victim of bullying. She had stepped in to beat a boy twice her size to a pulp. Since then, they had developed an inseparable friendship. There was a time when he had thought she would have been the one for him, but he had grown to realize that she was as interested in women as he was. “You knew she has to be one of the sexiest women to have walked into these offices and you put her in the office next to me?” She laughed and threw her head back. “I couldn’t pass the opportunity,” she said, “the moment I saw her I knew that this was going to shake things up in the office. “ “Well the only shaking I have time for right now is shaking some sense into Dillon for messing up a simple surveillance job.” Just then the door opened, and Dillon pushed his head in. He was a shorter man than Alexander and they had both come up together in the army. Their bond was as strong as his bond with his other brothers. “I know I know.” He said as he walked in “I messed up.” “Royally!” Alexander replied “I’m just going to excuse myself,” Jessica said backing out of the office, “and oh Dillon, you have to meet Alexander’s new secretary.” “A new secretary?” Dillon asked, “What happened to Jackie?” “She had to retire.” Alexander said, “but that’s not the point. How could you have messed this operation up?” “I have no idea what happened” Dillon replied, “I was there to do surveillance and some guy just walks over to the car and tells me to leave because he knows who I am and he knows why I was there.” “You’ve always been undercover.” Alexander replied, “what are the odds that this guy recognized you from one of your previous jobs?” “It’s possible but not likely.” Dillon replied “I’m very good with faces and I’ve never seen his before. Not to mention he had a faint accent that I couldn’t place.” “Your cover has literally been blown. I think that until we can figure out how these people know you, we will have to keep you out of the field.” “You’re pulling me?” Dillon asked “Yes,” Alexander replied, “we can’t afford to lose you out there and since neither of us has any idea who’s doing this, we need to lay low and figure it out before I put you back out there.” “And until then?” Dillon asked. “Until then you’ll be here at the training school,” Alexander replied wearily. “No way!” Dillon said, “you can’t put me with those prissy babies.” “Prissy babies?” Alexander asked “Your trainees.” Dillon replied, “they have no idea what hard work is. You won’t even let them get shot!” “I want to make them into better soldiers.” He said, “that involves not getting shot.” “I just think the way you’re training them may lead to bigger problems down the line.” Alexander was silent for a moment. When he was training for the army, it was an ordeal. He had been shot twice, once in the leg and once in the shoulder. Through it all, he had remained committed and came out at the top of his class. While he was there, however, he had figured out better ways to do things but there were times he wondered if doing it the good old-fashioned way would be better. “I’ve been through the program.” Alexander replied, “not everyone needs to be shot to know what to do when a bullet is lodged in your body.” “I can’t go there, Alex.” Dillon replied, “send me anywhere else.” “The only place I can send you is Mexico. Is that what you want?” Alexander asked. “I’ll take it,” Dillon replied. “God be with you,” Alexander said flashing him a smile. “What do we have down there?” Dillon asked. “Nothing concrete yet.” Alexander replied, “but we have some information claiming a cartel war may erupt at any time.” “Well, I’ll be ready to go by morning,” Dillon replied standing. “Dillon,” Alexander said before he walked out “be careful, it’s a dangerous time.” “I will be,” Dillon replied before walking out of the room. Alexander watched as his friend walked out of the room. The situation in Mexico had been getting worse for a very long time. Since he had taken over the office, he managed to widen operations worldwide, but the main focus of their company had been in Mexico. There was a small muffled sound in the other room that ores his attention from his inner musings and reminded him that there was someone in the other room. A beautiful woman who had captured his attention. The only problem was that he was no longer in the business for love and he had no desire to date anyone at work; especially his beautiful new assistant whose blue eyes excited him.
