CHAPTER 7

343 Words
SERAPHINA'S POV *Two weeks later* It had been two weeks since I arrived, taking cooking lessons from Mrs. Catherine- the head cook in her thirties- and slowly getting along with the servants in the mansion. But as days passed, the true faces of my mother and sister began to show. The perfect facade they had put up when I first arrived was peeling off, revealing something cold and cruel beneath. The only one who didn't change, who silently took sides and stood by me was father. Till this day, I don't still understand their reason for a change in attitude towards me. All I'd done was to be a docile, caring daughter. Adoption was common in wealthy families, but why adopt me, only to make me regret my existence. Back at the orphanage, my life was simple and ordinary- at least, I was treated as human. If only I'd known that the worst was yet to come. Mother was tolerable, but Heaven... Heaven was something else entirely. It was as if she held a personal grudge against me from a past life and was determined to make me pay. She'd drench me with cold water on freezing mornings, pour a cup of scalding hot coffee onto my head as I kneeled- while I'd try to suppress the urge to cry, and dunk my head in soapy water as I did the laundry. I once thought she was beautiful and sweet, but she was nothing short of a devil in disguise. The only song that rang in my head to describe my current situation at the moment was DEVIL IN DISGUISE By Marino She said, "You think the devil has horns? Well, so did I But I was wrong, his hair is combed, and he wears a suit and tie He's nice, polite, he'll catch you by surprise A smile so bright, you'd never bat an eye" Those lyrics echoed in my mind like a cruel reminder. I had met the devil's subordinate, but nothing prepared me to meet the Devil himself.
